Slightly off topic but I was behind a pickup truck the other day and noticed a set of chrome ball sacks dangling from the trailer hitch. Really? Why don't you just tattoo "Redneck Asshat" across your forehead?

Driverless cars: amazing.
http://www.economist.com/news/special-repo...r-look-no-hands Prototypes getting increased capabilities as we speak. Some industry execs estimate that mostly or fully automated vehicles will be in standard commercial use by the 2020s, some say more like by 2050. Benefits: - increase fuel economy, reduce emissions, by more efficiently routing cars through traffic - drastically reduce loss of life and huge medical costs associated with accidents by removing human error, weariness, recklessness, and drunkenness - provide youth, elderly, and disabled (e.g., the blind) with more self-sufficiency - free up commuting time to read, watch TV, work, look at Internet porn, etc. - enable me to put a bed in my car, go to sleep in New York, and wake up wherever the fuck I want 8 hours later Disadvantages: - lose that quaint old-timey ability to use a steering wheel - serious potential for privacy erosion, as Google or the like would know where you go all the time, also cars will be in constant communication with each other - whole nest of regulatory and liability issues to sort out first Thoughts? -------------------- Y'all laying up, doing shit. I'm 50/50 on this. I like the concept but I hate to give up my control. I think an 'autopilot' option would be nice for when you're too tired, drunk, etc., but only at my request. Privacy...ugh...I'm kinda torn on this too. We voluntarily give up our privacy every day when we use credit cards, cell phones, ATM's, GPS, etc. I guess it would depend on how strict the law is about active monitoring of your GPS location and data collection. As we move to a more digital/technological existence this is something that is going to be unavoidable. By the very nature of how networks work, there's no way to avoid be tracked. It's up to law makers to pass and enforce privacy laws. I guess it comes down to how much you trust the government. In other news, the sky is blue! Honestly though, I don't see this ever coming to pass. It would require a massive upgrade of network infrastructure all over the country and who is going to pay for that? -------------------- ![]() |

Honestly though, I don't see this ever coming to pass. It would require a massive upgrade of network infrastructure all over the country and who is going to pay for that? The article talks about this - it wouldn't need a big infrastructure investment at all. Google is already constantly building on its mapping software. You can use existing cellular networks. Each car would need software and communications capability. The article does mention that as being a challenge to car manufacturers with respect to keeping their prices competitive, but that seems like something that can be resolved pretty easily. -------------------- Y'all laying up, doing shit. RE: Using existing networks - See Boston moments after the bombings. Cell networks went down due to congestion/heavy usage. Now add close to 70 million wired cars to those networks. Even if you want to get conservative and incrementally add wired cars until every car in the US is replaced, you're still likely adding a lot of users to the networks. At some point, the networks will need to be upgraded. Who will pay the bill? Now I'm no expert on satellite networks, but I'd imagine there would need to be upgrades, or at least capacity expansions, here too in order to keep up with the amount of GPS data being tracked. I dunno, I think it would be an amazing feat to accomplish and the benefits in my mind outweigh the drawbacks, but I just don't see this happening. At least not here first. -------------------- ![]() |

Fair point, though I would guess that the cost savings and benefits would incentivize people to invest in infrastructure, whether that came from auto manufacturers, network providers, the government, etc. The article does mention that it is more likely to happen elsewhere first, but more because of the legal and regulatory hurdles that would have to be overcome here.

Didn't the phone get shutdown in Boston because they were actually purposefully set off as a safety precaution? No, that's what was thought at first (by me included) but the BPD said they didn't do it. Pretty sure I remember reading that carriers came out and said their networks were overwhelmed. -------------------- ![]() |

When traffic is bad out there (East Coast), it is usually due to a legitimate reason and is usually limited to peak hours. Out here, highways at a dead stop because d-bag 1 and d-bag 2 are talking on their phones without bluetooth and driving the exact same speed in the left two lanes and suudenly both decide to stop because they missed their exits. Or worse, absolutely nothing. No accident, no road work, just an insanely overloaded highway system and a public transit system would be an embarrassment of most 3rd world countries. Despite understanding the concerns voiced here, I would endorse this in a blink of an eye. I agree with Alitaki. I like the idea of an autopilot, but I'd want to be able to control the car if I want to. Something like the cars out of Demolition Man would be perfect in that regard.

Is this the science and technology thread? If not, I declare it so!
Saw this for the first time in a restaurant last night - the NCR mobile pay application, which allows you to order drinks and pay your bill with your mobile phone. http://www.ncr.com/products/restaurant/pos...ware/mobile-pay The restaurant I was at didn't have it fully integrated, in that I couldn't order drinks or signal the server while at the table during the meal. They had a 2D code printed on the bill at the end of the night that I could scan and pay through an app on my phone, either by setting up an account with NCR, or linking it to my PayPal account. Pretty cool. One immediately obvious benefit is that you don't have to wait for the server to pick up your check, run it, and bring it back. It was the first time I had seen it, so I wanted to read more before using it, and was a little hesitant for security reasons. Which is of course probably dumb, since there is likely a much greater security risk in giving your card to a server to run. -------------------- Y'all laying up, doing shit. Not sure how scientific that is.

this video shows 13 facts you might not know are true. Like how Neil Armstrong had to clear customs after going to the Moon.
