QUOTE A national college athletes' advocacy group and a sports management professor calculate in the report that if college sports shared their revenues the way pro sports do, the average Football Bowl Subdivision player would be worth $121,000 per year, while the average basketball player at that level would be worth $265,000.

Here, I'll just dump this here.
http://deadspin.com/5911519/ohio-state-sel...ho-gives-a-shit "...take your hat off to university compliance officers, because holy shit they have the worst job in the world. Doing nothing but tracking down and meticulously documenting every bit of seemingly innocuous minutiae, then seeing if it's expressly allowed in the NCAA's 426-page manual. God bless you, because I would shoot myself after two days. Sometimes I think the NCAA is the country's greatest job creation program. Thousands of jobs as compliance officers and enforcement staff exist for no real reason, and it's all paid for by the free labor of revenue-sport athletes." -------------------- |

I think this should become the "NCAA sucks" thread.
Charlie Pierce can be harsh and hysterical at times, but man, he is just such a great writer. I absolutely love this analogy. http://www.grantland.com/story/_/id/891470...obannon-vs-ncaa QUOTE By and large, the people charged with running our various sports conglomerates have proven through history to be as incapable of taking the long view of their own survival as the average brachiosaurus was. They blunder around, eating whatever comes under their noses, trampling the scenery and hooting loudly into the wind. They never see the meteor coming. -------------------- Y'all laying up, doing shit. Nahmean, playing whatever little volleyballs they got on the beach and doing everything, the activities.

Good piece. I'm glad to see the O'Bannon suit is still going.

I'm actually pretty fortunate to be at a DII school - the bulk of our athletes are actually fairly conscientious about their academic performance. That actually wasn't the case when I first started working at the university, but it's changed over the last decade. Even the football team, which was the home of the biggest lunkheads when I began, is markedly better.
Where I really see the opposite of the traditional stereotype is with our women's athletic programs. The female athletes that I get in classes, in general, are some of the hardest working students that I have. Actually. This post has been edited by Sed: Feb 9 2013, 06:04 PM -------------------- |

To be fair, I'd expect that. Womens sports really aren't that lucrative. Are they?

This is fucking hideous.
QUOTE Bauman, a redshirt sophomore from Kerkhoven, Minn., wants to go pro in Inspiration. At the moment, he's trying to do that through music and motivational speaking. Bauman has recorded some songs -- syrupy stuff that would be right at home on gospel radio -- that seek to encourage rather than tear down. Bauman was adopted as a one-month-old. As a kid in rural Minnesota, Bauman faced taunts and funny looks as the black child of white parents. But he overcame discrimination, and he wants to let young people know they can overcome any circumstance and succeed. That's the message that could be silenced by an NCAA rule. Bauman embodies everything for which college athletics should stand. He should be the face of the NCAA. But the NCAA wants to make sure it is the only entity that can make money off Bauman's face. Fearing an NCAA reprisal, Minnesota officials have asked Bauman to take his name off his songs and remove his image from the videos if he wants to remain eligible to wrestle at Minnesota. Burn the NCAA down. -------------------- |

The NCAA advances these false claims of poverty so it can argue that its member schools can't possibly afford to spend more money on sports, much less pay their athletes. O'Bannon's lawyers put the lie to this, too, invoking foundational truths of economics dating to Adam Smith and David Ricardo: "Redistributing rents does not change true economic costs. It simply takes money from one person or group and shifts it to another." Translation: Paying athletes wouldn't result in schools spending additional money on sports. They would just spend less of it on coaches and facilities and more on students.
Very nicely put. -------------------- |

Nicely put, but I don't agree with it in the slightest. Yes, they wouldn't spend more, they would simply take that
Money from elsewhere. The idea that "elsewhere" is coaches salaries and facilities is downright laughable and naive. One needs to look no further than penn state and how far they bent over backwards to protect its precious football program to know where priorities lie. That money is going to be taken from educational departments and programs. Also, more money to students? Ha. The second you start paying them, they are athletes and employees of the school. Not students. And spare me the "I guess the kid who works in the cafeteria isn't a student because he's getting paid" semantics argument, it's not the same thing. A paid athlete at a college is no different then a teacher who takes a course for free where they attend, and no one would classify them as "student" |

Still fine by me. All I want is to see the billions of dollars flowing into the NCAA flow to the actual athletes, not just to coaches and administrators.
