http://news.cnet.com/8301-13578_3-57551614...pyright-reforms

1. House Republican committee releases paper on how broken our copyright system is.
2. RIAA/MPAA rings up House Republicans
3. House Republican committee retracts paper, saying "We totally didn't mean it, Mickey Mouse forever!"

<mike-b-bait>Oh, Intellectual Property laws. You're so awful.</mike-b-bait>

I thought the paper had a lot of interesting things to say, including that copyright terms have gotten way too long, statutory damages are way too high and false copyright claims are not punished enough. It's too bad even having this discussion interests so few people outside the tech-savvy. (I could be wrong, I also don't talk with people about politics that much. As far as I can tell, or at least it feels that way some times.)

The paper's not perfect, but it's sad they would disavow it so fast.

First comes love.

Then comes marriage.

Then comes, wait a second we totally misunderstood what we were doing originally, time to back away.

Then everyone just leaves awkwardly...

I would love to take the bait on this, but I am too busy paying the price for being out next week - i.e., creating twice as many monopolies for my clients this week as I normally would.

How much competition would a patent lawyer destroy if a patent lawyer could destroy competition?

There once was a company named for fruit
They found rounded rectangles made loot
They filed a design patent
And made a big fat mint
Using that shape now earns you a lawsuit

Nice piece on the brokenness of the DMCA. A remix artist made a video called Buffy vs. Edward about gender roles in vampire pop culture. They actually presented before the US Copyright Office at the 2012 hearings on exemptions to the DMCA, and the Register of Copyrights specifically called it out by name as a case of fair use. Lionsgate bought the Twilight series and is now abusing the DMCA to try and make money off the artist's work on Youtube, and when they lost challenges they had it taken down completely through Youtube's system.

A US District Judge just annihilated copyright trolling law firm Prenda Law:

http://www.popehat.com/2013/05/06/does-pre...-gave-them-one/

http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2013/05...-investigators/

All of the attorneys involved are facing disbarment and criminal prosecution.
