I saw that one of the available topics of this thread is ref complaints.

Our ice beer league uses a 2 ref system. For some reason, one of the refs didn't seem to like our team that given night. The end result, we had 11 minors called against us. The other team? Just 1 minor. Wtf? Believe me, they weren't all legit. Maybe 4 of them.

Have any of you guys experienced lopsided reffing in your leagues?

Oh yeah. my team regularly gets about 5-6 minors called against us that are phantom calls at best. I've been suspended for 2 games for "instigating" a fight when I was halfway across the zone - all I did was pull the two fighters apart.

It depends on the refs. The guys at the roller league we play at usually let everything go. It's always bad when you play a team that's friends with one or both of the refs. Calls really get lopsided then.

I got a roughing penalty for a play I wasn't on the ice for. I was the next shift and skated down ice after the whistle to see if my friend was OK. The ref called me because I was the first person he saw, since the guy the penalty was meant for had already gotten on the bench and he hadn't seen where he went. I also got punched in the face twice by a guy (I had a cage on) while the ref looked. He later said "I should've called a penalty, but didn't, because I wasn't sure if it was tit-for-tat." The bottom line here is that 90% of refs are fucking stupid.

That's fuggan horseshit if you're paying to play in the league.

I understand that reffing a hockey game is a tough thankless job but when you're paying money to play in the league (we pay abour $475/player for a 22 game plus playoff winter season) and get suspended games without cause, well, it starts getting as frustrating as getting blue balls on a first date with a mormon.

We had 2 guys last night that nobody ever saw before and were wildly inconsistent. They had stretches where they called everything or let it everything go. No matter, we won, 6-2. We finished 7-3 and in 2nd place. Playoffs start next week.

Luckily, I don't - the first season I played with them, I paid per game. then I took a season off because of the ref problems and game time problems. The season after that, the guy who runs our team came back and offered me a free ride, as long as I keep scoring. basically, I was hired as a trigger since the team had nobody score more than 8 goals the season I was gone.

Wow. I'd be pretty pissed if I was on your team. I hate bullshit where captains cut favorable breaks to people so they can play fantasy GM with their rec team.

They were, but fortunately not at me... since then, though he has started paying for everyone which is nice because it would be $400+ per player for 16 games and playoffs.

I would never pay for anyone. I'd lay it out but they're paying me back. Nobody plays for free, especially for over $400. I don't care how good you are.

I know some of his reasons for paying for the whole team - free advertising, since he named the team after his business, and I think he can get a tax write off for the team too, don't quote me on that though. He's pretty wealthy and loves the game - I stopped asking questions after I was told I'd get free ice time.

still pay for all pickup and tournaments, sometimes get called for a friend's team where I pay $15 a game, but I'm only listed as a reserve for his roster.

I'd imagine so if he's icing a team on his dime for over $400 a player. Regular guy like me? That's not happening.

agreed - league rule is that goalies don't pay, but they still charge $4800 per team. you can offest by getting more than the 12 guys, but then people complain about less ice time.

I'm not going to throw down 10% of my salary to field a team, but if you want to pay for everyone - more power to you.

Especially if you can pull it off! Good for him that he can (and good for you as well!). I bet you can ice a real good team with the hook of, "don't worry, I'm paying for it."

Yep. One of my league's was sponsored by a local sports bar, and it was the best and most douchey team in the league by far. They were basically a B team playing in a C league and they were assholes about it.

well, not really - most of the guys are just there for a little exercise and fun, beer in the lot after the game and a few hours out of the house. there are some asshats on the other teams who get whiny when they lose, and, while I don't like losing at all, it doesn't bother me as much as it used to. We don't do so bad - almost always over .500, but not much over.

No. I really mean there that "I hate rec hockey players who think they're in some sort of professional minor league." There are just so many of them that I round up to all rec hockey players. I play too. You could even call it a minor case of self-loathing!

"What are the keys to your game?"

A team I thought I was going to get to play for started last night, but apparently the guy who runs the team isn't interested in getting me back on the team (the guy I quit the team because of left the team over money issues). Ah well. The other team I'm playing on should be starting next week. I'm playing defense. The last time I played defense as a regular was for this team at a different league. I tore my ACL in the second period of the first game. I'm hoping this stint goes better.

We're half way through our summer season. I just read from our league's website that a player in our league (different division) passed away during a practice last Thursday. He was 50 and his heart gave out. I remember playing against him years ago. Decent guy, sad news.

If you got the gear, I say go for it. Nothing better than playing on ice. Game moves so much faster.

One day I also wish to play ice hockey. But for now, I'll stick with the blades.

Ice is so much better. I started by playing roller hockey for a year casually. I'd never really want to go back. (Though if ice wasn't available and I had money for new bearings, I'd play roller.)

Well if ice weren't available, wouldn't the money saved from league fees provide you with enough to buy new bearings? tongue.gif

I still enjoy playing roller hockey. You can't just pick up your skates, stick and gloves and play ice any time you want. Roller is readily available to me what with 2 rinks in skating distance and 3 more in driving distance. I still play on weekends but I'd much rather get back to playing on ice.

I'll do roller every few years - but nothing beats the cold breeze when you're playing on ice (unless you have a full itech, then you get no breeze)

You know, I thought about that. Maybe. It would depend on whether or not I wanted to get a video game instead. wink.gif

There's nothing wrong with roller hockey; I just don't enjoy it nearly as much. It doesn't feel right.

Stupid question: How do you stop in roller hockey? Or do you just not stop? I remember watching some roller hockey league on ESPN many moons ago (it had like ramps going up towards the glass behind the nets). Is there icing? A race for the ball must be a painful experience if you can't stop like you would on skates.

Wait, how much are ice league fees by you that you can't afford a video game, ball bearings and still have a good amount left over?
Cheapest ice league around here is 250$ for a 10 game season.

I know what you mean about it not feeling right. I started on roller, switched to ice then went back to roller when my ice team decided not to play anymore. That transition back was rough.

I usually pull a really tight turn and do a small spin in place. It's possible to hockey stop like you would on ice (I've seen it done) but I've never pulled it off.

How's your adventures in ice coming along?

Depends on the season. This summer my fees are $150 (for what should be a 10 game season, I think). Also, it's worth pointing out that I will never be out of range of an ice rink. When I say I can't afford bearings, I mean it's not something I should really allocate money to. I allocate money to ice hockey no matter what because I love to play it. Fuck, ice hockey is probably my second or third largest expense after rent and car insurance. It's probably up there with car insurance too - figure $400-500 a year on league fees, $100 a year on stick replacements, $100 a year for sharpenings and miscellaneous gear/tape/whatever...

It actually partially relates to stopping. It just feels so different under your feet - it's like jogging on wheels instead of skating.

Depends on the surface, but you can do a kind of "hockey stop" on roller. Its just not as smooth as it is on ice. For instance Skate Safe uses some kind of polyurethane tiles that if you use really soft wheels, its about as close to the feel of ice as you'll get from inline skates.

USA Hockey Inline rules are used by most places so there is no icing rule but like I said, you can do a hockey stop on inlines.

Wow. The roller league I played at was 225$ for a 10 game season with one guaranteed playoff game. I played every season except summer so my league fees were 675$. Ice will cost me 1K$ a year if I play all four seasons. Man. I gotta move out of NY.

Outside of the 3 times I went to what amounted to a stick and puck with one other guy, I haven't even seen my skates in a month or so. There aren't any stick and puck sessions up here where I'm working, and the two rinks 5 minute saway from where I live are both closed. I'm fairly certain there's another one a town over, but the hours are all wacky and most of the time is allotted to private groups (at least, in the summer).

I did contemplate doing this 6 week training thing at one of the local rinks. However, it was rather expensive and the classes were like an hour long so I decided to dismiss it. Plus, I didn't know what kind of skill level was required. I do plan on signing up for the HNA beginner hockey school (or equivalent) this fall, though. Hopefully I can skate a couple times before I start.

1 cool thing about roller is the lighter plastic puck so you can wizz that thing. But it sure hurts more getting hit by a rubber puck.
