Fenway Park, in Boston, is a lyric little bandbox of a ballpark. Everything is painted green and seems in curiously sharp focus, like the inside of an old-fashioned peeping-type Easter egg. It was built in 1912 and rebuilt in 1934, and offers, as do most Boston artifacts, a compromise between Man's Euclidean determinations and Nature's beguiling irregularities. - John Updike

edit - and then I watch the last 15 minutes of the newest episode. At least the first half made up for it.

Agreed, the ending was really disappointing after an otherwise good episode. The last 15 minutes were completely predictable. Of course Tommy would walk in, get the wrong idea, and then go out and throw a pity party for himself while getting drunk. It pisses me off to no end that the writers feel Janet/Sheila and Tommy's alcoholism need to be the only sources of drama in this show. They've beaten this dead horse into a bloody pulp. The next episode will likely consist of him seeing ghosts again and then promptly going to see Sheila, who after banging Tommy's brains out will do something sneaky to blackmail Tommy into getting Damien out of the job.

The next episode, though, based on the previews, has the potential to be as good as Sean of the Dead.

Also, not sure how I feel about this season's Top Chef so far. I have more annoyance and hate for certain chefs than I have love for any of them. I truly think last season was the best season.

If you ever knew anyone who was like Clint Eastwood's character with the racism, you'd know how spot-on he is with the delivery. A different generation than us just talks like that.

Watching "Louie" on FX, it's only three episodes in. Honestly one of the most unique television shows I can remember. I can't even characterize it. My ex-girlfriend told me about it and described it as "funny, but also really depressing -- you'd really like it." (Which is more about me and our relationship, but whatever.) Anyway, Louie CK is moving into Lenny Bruce/George Carlin territory for me with his standup, which is a large part of the show. But it's the other parts that are different, because they aren't just outright funny. It's about what comedians do when they aren't on stage, but I can't quite figure out if they set things thinking they are funnier than they are or that they intend them to play out as disturbing. I hope it's the latter. I'm not convinced that it's "great" yet, but there's something weirdly genius about it.

It is the latter. Louis CK stories tend to delve into the awkwardness of life, whether it's family, fatherhood, aging or just everyday situations. Each episode so far has it's counterpart in his standup, and I think the new show is a perfect representation of the underlying awkwardness and cringe humor that Louis is known for.

I love the show, not sure if it'll be better than Lucky Louie, but I have high hopes for a longer run than 13 episodes.

PS HBO really sucks sometimes. Why would they cancel Lucky Louie? Its viewer #'s went up slowly and it developed a very loyal following. I guess when confronted with something like that the only answer is to end it. dickbags.

I definitely get his humor, but there's something different and avant-garde about the show too. It's entirely his show with nothing compromised, and I can't figure out just yet if the awkwardness is entirely intentional (in which case, it's genius) or just an un-intended byproduct because he doesn't have a forceful producer making him round out the surreal parts.

Like
In the first episode, he's on an awkward blind date. Using Seinfeld as the network standup, he does the intro about how he's having trouble adjusting to dating again and then goes out on a hilarious but awkwardly real bad date ... which ends with her running away and flying off in a helicopter out of nowhere. It's the punchline to an oral joke. "Did you ever have a date so bad that the girl runs off at the end and jumps into a helicopter and flies away swiftly to get away from you?" The scene came from out of nowhere. I can't think of any live-action "sitcom" that has done something like that.

And
In episode three, he gets into the funny fight with Nick DiPaolo. But then it becomes so unfunny that it looks like it's a real and actual fight, complete with them showing DiPaolo with a bloody hand. The wrap-up to that piece is him and Nick sitting in the hospital, having a very real conversation about aging in a long relationship.

It's almost like the postmodern evolution of Seinfeld and Curb Your Enthusiasm. Seinfeld was about the life of Jerry Seinfeld, comedian, but it was perfectly scripted with exaggerated and well-thought plots and actors playing every role. Curb took it to the next level, having a more realistic feel to it because of the way that it's shot and giving you a closer sense of intimacy to the people involved (Larry David and his celebrity friends). Louie takes that intimacy to the next level, where he also shows you some of the unfunny and awkward stuff too.

I lean toward it being intentional, because his standup is so smart and brilliant. He finds humor in everything. He makes hilarious jokes about opening milk cartons -- that's fucking genius. And you can tell that he has complete control over the show too, because the network let him subtly drop an N-bomb in Episode Three.

I love the show, not sure if it'll be better than Lucky Louie, but I have high hopes for a longer run than 13 episodes.

PS HBO really sucks sometimes. Why would they cancel Lucky Louie? Its viewer #'s went up slowly and it developed a very loyal following. I guess when confronted with something like that the only answer is to end it. dickbags.

Oh, I also wanted to add that I sadly never liked Lucky Louie. I thought it was the wrong format for him. He's not an actor, so doing the live show came off negative to me. Things like Mr. Show and Saturday Night Live work because those guys/gals are great comedic actors. Louis CK is a standup, so having to actually play the character Louis CK (even when doing his own humor) didn't really work for me. But the new format is a much better vehicle because they can reshoot the scenes until he nails it.

Did you see the most recent episode Leeds?

I lost my shit at the scene with him going through security at the airport.

"Sir, what is this?"

"Uh, lube. For masturbating."

"... Just let him go."

Brooklyn's Finest.

2.5/5

Good acting, decent plot, but it was morose and depressing, especially the ending. I don't really like the "multiple interwoven storylines" plot device, either.

EDIT: I have to say too...without ruining anything...at the end with the clown and the honking nose; holy shit. I fucking lost it. That was hysterical.

Hmmm. I'm not sure I like where this is going. I really hope they don't make Dexter a pity-partying pussy in this season. Also, haven't they already had a "police investigating Dexter" plot arc, with Doakes in season 2?

Oh, yeah... MAJOR SPOILERS FOR ANYONE WHO HASN'T SEEN SEASON 4.

True Blood and Entourage were entertaining last night. I will say that True Blood's plot is way too dependent on Sookie being a fucking retard. Entourage has been a letdown so far this season. I constantly consider stoping watching it but Johnny Drama vs. John Stamos was just hilarious.

Food Inc. - You'll never want to eat again. There are some components of the documentary that give you a little hope, but the majority of the movie will make you wonder how we all haven't died from food related illnesses.

I'd recommend this to anyone who wants to see how the farmers are getting screwed over by Monsanto, and essentially , we are getting screwed. Everything has genetically modified organisms in it. The FDA is running similar to how the oil industry is run. FDA has former Monsanto big-wigs running it. Then they leave, go back to work for a food powerhouse like Tyson or Smithfield, then go back to work for the FDA - it's a cycle that won't be broken unless we vote at the supermarket. We aren't powerless.

Although some of this material I was somewhat familiar, a good portion of it was eye opening. Seeing how the chickens are raised, cattle being fed corn even though they shouldn't be (it's cheaper), how the food industry is subsidized, etc.

Edit- its available via streaming NetFlix.

Cop Out with Bruce Willis...

Very funny and pretty good action too. It's a silly movie, but sure as hell was worth more of my time than other movies that should have been "stellar".

6/10 I just like Bruce Willis movies.

Deadliest Catch.

The season finale was tonight. I found it a bit anti-climatic after the drama and turmoil of the last 3-4 weeks . It was an emotionally-draining season experiencing the loss of Captain Phil. And I don't doubt I was partly reliving the loss of my dad. But it wasn't hard. It was mostly cathartic. It's hard to describe. But I know I've never seen or felt anything like this season from a TV show.

The Damned United. Not bad. Not great. Some fun parts, but not all that special to watch, I guess. Probably appeals more to Brits or hardcore British soccer fans, I guess. The dude who plays Wormtail in Harry Potter shows up and does some good stuff, after what has to be like the 2341th movie I've seen him in lately.
