Other cities are allowed to have indie rock culture, too. If fact, while there's a ton of cool things to do in Brooklyn there's also something distinctly fabricated about it in that that scene is almost entirely made up of bridge & tunnel (and Michigan and Ohio) people who moved there specifically to be indie hipsters. It was a natural scene 10 and maybe even 5 years ago, and then it became like a sleepaway camp for indie rockers.

Yeah, but everyone there talks with a brooklyn accent and where's Brooklyn dodger gear unironically.

I could rail on this for an hour at a time. My girlfriend lives on Union. Right in the belly of the motherfuckin' beast. Fabricated? Williamsburg is now the least real place I've ever been in my entire life. Hipster has become a uniform. Guys look like little skinny mustache'd turds, and attractive girls make themselves look homely and demure because it's cool. The apartment buildings look like they were built by Ikea.

What I really love doing is wearing like an entire Under-Armour workout outfit out to the diner or somewhere for breakfast, and have an eatery full of 20 year olds dressed like Devendra Banhart look at me like "who's this jock fuck? btw..did you hear the new Shitty Assholes record?".

It's almost surreal.

This is all tolerable because there are dozens and dozens of eaterys, bars, and venues that are top shelf, but the people. My goodness. It's ironically unoriginal.

And I'm pretty metro/fashion conscious/artsy as far as far as a straight dude goes. I don't find comfort in this place. I think it's totally phoney.

And that neighborhood in Atlanta where the venues are (there's one next to a coffee shop that I can't remember the name of.. real dump, but super cool) I thought was a really nice place to hang.

I get what xcdude is saying though. The hip neighborhood in Charlotte is just nothing more than copy paste New York. While Brooklyn may be fabricated now, at least it started organically. What I assume he is describing, and what definitely is the case in Charlotte, is a copy of a fabrication.

There are definitely some cool places in it, but overall it just makes me roll my eyes.

Oh this is a gentrified neighborhood towards the outskirts, where they are trying to turn old warehouses into apartments and other things. It looked ripped right out of the gentrified Brooklyn that I've seen recently. The acoustics were horrible, and it was built last year. Just a meh place. I wouldn't go there for a show again, but I'm glad I went I was about 2 feet away from the edge of the stage since I Got there earlier. My point was it was very Fabricated like Brooklyn was.

Speaking of which, I've really liked the music scene here, and a lot of the venues that I've been to have been awesome. This one just sucked.

Do you remember which venue? Problem is with this is I could name like 5 neighborhoods like this. NONE of which were the one I was in last night laugh2.gif

THE EARL! It just came to me. Place was cool as hell. I remember being stoked it was the first show that week of that tour I was't worried about being stabbed outside the venue.

And, up on readback, I didnt realize how vague that was. haha.

I've been meaning to get to that one. East Atlanta is pretty cool, its just far from me.

It is not at all surprising that Pitchfork is tripping over themselves to gush about the Savages album, but I liked this line:

http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/17977-...lence-yourself/

QUOTE
It's one of rock’s most commanding and ferociously poised debuts in recent years, the work of a band whose outsized confidence and sharp clarity of vision doesn’t correlate with the short amount of time it’s been together.

"Sharp clarity" and power are definitely how I would describe them. I find something a little...awkward about their music, can't quite place why. Some of their songs feel unfulfilled to me, like the tension builds and never really resolves satisfactorily. But they are definitely a jolt of energy, and as I think I said earlier, they are a great live band.

This record has grown on me recently. I didn't like it at first. It's a couple years old, so I apologize if this has been posted here before. Warning: This tune is not easy to listen to. It could actually ruin your Monday. It's more Friday night, I'm getting ready to go out drinking music.

Vid is probably NSFW.

Same here - I caught a snippet of the track with Elton playing piano and it sounded good...this one is just meh...but I am looking forward to the album.

A friend passed along to me this band Atlas Genius. I'm really digging their album so far.

As for Savages, I really like them, but agree with Mike about pitchfork bending over backwards for them. It's a bit ridiculous. I like the album so far, but a lot of the songs just don't do it for me. "shut Up" may be my favorite. Also their manifesto is kitchy and a distraction. Just play kickass music girls.

I didn't like either of the last two albums. Rated R is a classic and Songs for the Deaf is a desert island record for me, so in comparison Lullabies to Paralyze and Era Vulgaris were both pretty mediocre. Although, Era Vulgaris has a couple great tunes on it.

And that tune Puck just posted is awesome. Really looking forward to this record, and I reeeeeeally hope they come around with Dave playing drums. The few gigs they've done so far were with Jon Theodore, which is really cool, but nothing would be like Dave.

(Jon Theodore is the wildman who played on Deloused in the Comatorium by the Mars Volta.. which is now 10 years old.. fuck.)

See, I liked Lullabies and Era - thought they both stand up pretty well.

Fairly certain Jon is sticking with Queens for the tour - this based on an interview that Jay Mohr did with Josh that I recently heard. As much as I like Grohl , Theodore is no slouch as evidenced by your comment regarding Deloused.

I was just re-listening to Lullabies to Paralyze recently and it's pretty fucking great. A little bit of filler in the second half but more than made up for by the strength of the other songs on the album.

Ok fine both of you. I'm gonna put it on today. I do own it. I don't think I ever shook my disappointment that it wasn't as good (to me) as Songs for the Deaf, which is hindsight, 12 years later is one of my all time favorites.

And Puck, technically, Dave Grohl can't touch Jon Theodore. As far as players in modern rock go, you're not gonna find too many guys as good as Theodore. I'd just like to see Dave as he's the whole "Bonham of our generation" thing, and I blew it by not seeing them in 2001 with him.

Into the Hollow is the stand out track for me on Era - but I pretty much like the entire album except for the last track - otherwise, I'm Designer, Turnin on the Screw and Sick,Sick,Sick are great tracks - Misfit Love has a fantastic riff..nice and dirty..

Agreed about Grohl - I've used the analogy that he is Bonham and Moon rolled into one.

I Don't Like: unions

Foxygen last night, Kurt Vile tonight, Iron and Wine on Sunday. Back to what's important. I've seen like one show all month, losing my mind.

Paying the price today for the 11:30 p.m. start time for Foxygen last night, but it was a pretty fun show. Apparently those guys have developed a rep as being temperamental and throwing tantrums when they don't want to play, but last night they were damn sure up for it. The frontman definitely does his best to channel Mick Jagger, and the rest of the group follows suit. We've said before that their music has a retro vibe, and that definitely came out live, but not to the point where it felt stale or repetitive.

Opener was this band from Olympia called Crumbs - sort of a zany, art pop quartet with some really out there vocals. The kind of band that will likely never find a regular audience, and they were great. It's refreshing to see people just go for it like that.

I was kind of lukewarm on that last Surfer Blood album which everyone loved but I'm really digging this single off their new album:
