I downloaded this last night. It okay enough, I guess, but it made me kind of sad for some reason. They experimented with "St. Anger" and fans almost universally panned them, so this new album sounds like almost an attempt to imitate Metallica rather than just being Metallica. It's like they tried to recreate "Master of Puppets" and completely overlooked that fact that what made that album so awesome was its originality and uniqueness. Every song on the new album is about two or three minutes too long (average song length is like 7:30 minutes), and the overall theme of the album (um, death, I guess) is kind of stupid.

I dunno. I think they're just too old and too out of touch with the world -- these guys are all insanely rich -- to be relevant anymore. As Neil Young would ironically suggest, they're fading away when they probably should have burned out.

On the plus side, you can really hear the Thin Lizzy influence. Thin Lizzy rules.

Haven't had a chance to pick it up yet, but an interesting consensus is forming:

The music = Good

The production/mastering = AWFUL

Some are saying that the brewing backlash may be the A-Bomb that lands in the Loudness War's Hiroshima.

Listening to it (Death Magnetic) now.

Good stuff, although the idiot anti-Metallica crowd will probably bitch about how the songs are long and meandering....which is precisely what they've been asking for for nearly 20 years, but okay. I guess the band can't win. rolleyes.gif

I do agree, however, that the production and mastering is a tad too loud and distorted in spots, but do think that overall, it does work to a large extent.

After he absolutely killed last night on SNL, I'm thinking about doing something I swore I would never do: I'm thinking about getting the new Lil' Wayne album. Can someone talk me out of this please? Thanks a bunch.

Sorry, you're not the only one, so no help. I've heard Lil' Wayne described as "one of the few people in hip-hop who still has any original ideas."

Wow. Good God. I just put it on in my car. The drums literally distort at low volume. There's a few rockin' riffs, but I'm good. No thanks.

I have been listening to The Magnetic Fields 69 Love Songs Volume 1 pretty often lately ... some pretty good stuff there.

Here's the ironic thing - the stem mixes provided to the makers of the Guitar Hero and/or Rock Band games are much cleaner.

It's starting to get quite a bit of news, actually:

I found this band The Coral - diggin on them. The remind me of a 60's psych-pop/folk type band -sorta Kinks/Animals type sound to them... pretty cool stuff. They even look like a throwback to that era.

This is one of there more popular tracks - Dreaming of You

and one entitled "Who's Gonna find Me?"

That's how I discovered the name of the band at all. We were scrolling through the song list and saw Silversun Pickups, and I said "who the fuck is this?" Then we let the sample of the song play and it was followed by "oh shit, this song!" It was one of those songs I only heard intermittently on the radio and never caught the name.

This is off her latest, which was released last summer. The album is Kala.

Awesome.

Have we talked about the new TV on The Radio yet? It's kind of a subtle album. It didn't bowl me over the first couple of times through but it's growing on me.

Also, I'm kind of digging The Felice Brothers self titled debut. Check out their MySpace page for a taste. The singer is Dylanesque which, based on some recent conversations here, means some people will hate him.

Slightly gayer, Skipping Girl Vinegar from Australia have some really catchy pop tunes on their MySpace page. Sift the Noise is particularly addictive. (I know -- GAY!)

And who was it here that liked Vampire Weekend? Mike? If so, check out Ra Ra Riot. Their new album, The Rhumb Line sounds a little like Vampire Weekend only not quite as relentlessly upbeat. Their MySpace Page.

Thanks for reminding me about the Felice Brothers - I always hear "Frankie's Gun" on the radio when my alarm is going off for an hour straight in the morning, and in between bouts of wishing I were dead, I think "that song is pretty cool, I should check those guys out."

And yes, it was me who was gushing about VW, so I'll give those other guys a listen. Thanks.

So...I haven't participated in this thread at all since my recent listening habits have been all over the map (or, often directed by my 2 year old as I listen to the Shrek/Curious George/Over The Hedge soundtracks over and over and over and over).

But I have to say, I've made my way back to The Hold Steady and I've enjoyed the listen as much, if not more, than the first time I made my way through their catalog.

Dead Confederate. The Onion AV Club describes them as "Bleach-era Nirvana covering My Morning Jacket." I don't love My Morning Jacket so that might account for the three songs off their new album that I don't like, but the rest of the album is fucking fantastic. Their MySpace page:

Ive really been enjoying the new Kings of Leon CD.

Are the two earlier ones similar? If so, I'm in.

Recommend 'em?

"Because of the Times" is a fantastic record. As an entire album, it's probably better start to finish than this new one. The new album hits you over the head with the 5 best songs they've every written in a row, but than completely dies.

"Aha Shake Heartbreak" is worth getting into, not my favorite though. If you like the Kings for their early shamelessly indie sound/soungwriting thing, "Youth and Young Manhood" and "Aha Shake" are the ones to listen too, but I like them for the sheer size of their sound now. Even their old songs performed now sound better to me.

The Kings at the Garden in January, sign me up!

Lush "Gala."

Thank God that the Rock Band people dug these gals back up, because they're awesome and their albums are impossible to find. "Gala" just made it onto iTunes. Still can't find "Spooky" though.

Listening to them scored you serious art school ass in college. Their collapse was almost blueprint 90s band: record company presses for a hit to capitalize of the novelty of their look, attention on lead singer fractures the band, and after a major tour their drummer kills himself. They have a greatest hits album, but don't get it. They stopped being good as soon as some industry exec told them to look up.

I've downloaded their stuff from Limewire (shhh! don't tell anyone!). You can find their CDs at discount on Amazon.

I figured something stupid had happened to that band. I didn't know about the unfortunate part.

I've spent a ton of time on youtube this weekend lamenting the lack of good-sounding Cult of Luna videos.

But there's some good Isis stuff that made me remember why I love them:

I also found a clip from an American Nightmare show I was at:

Awful sound, but memories of good times.
