1. Yankees are planning on switching Granderson to LF and Gardner to CF.
2. 5th starter battle is between David Phelps and Ivan Nova. Loser looks to be the long man in the bullpen, although both still have a minor league option left.
3. Matt Diaz, Melky Mesa and Juan Rivera will compete for the righty DH/backup OF spot.
4. Eduardo Nunez and Jayson Nix will compete for the utility infielder spot.
5. The catching situation is fucking terrible. Chris Stewart, Francisco Cervelli, Bobby Wilson and Austin Romine will play for two spots.
6. With the whole hip thing and steroid story, I'm not expecting A-Rod back this season. Just for the distraction factor. But if he does return the Yanks are hoping he hits 13 home runs to trigger his first bonus payment(660 homers). If he hits that milestone next season the bonus payment would be part of their $189 budget.

Projected Lineup
1. Brett Gardner
2. Derek Jeter
3. Robinson Cano
4. Mark Teixeira
5. Curtis Granderson
6. Kevin Youkilis
7. Travis Hafner
8. Ichiro Suzuki
9. Chris Stewart

Basically the 1999 All-Star team.

1. CC Sabathia
2. Hiroki Kuroda
3. Phil Hughes
4. Andy Pettitte
5. David Phelps

1. Ivan Nova
2. Clay Rapada
3. Joba Chamberlain
4. Boone Logan
5. David Aadsma
6. David Robertson
7. Mariano Rivera

1. Juan Rivera
2. Francisco Cervelli
3. Dan Johnson
4. Eduardo Nunez

Minor leaguers who could see time and contribute in 2013:
Melky Mesa - OF
David Adams - 2B/3B
Corban Joseph - 2B/PH
Austin Romine - C
Adam Warren - SP
Vidal Nuno - SP
Chase Whitely - RP
Cody Eppley - RP
Jim Miller - RP
Mark Montgomery(AA) - RP
Juan Cedeno - LRP
Josh Spence - LRP

A prototypical "stop-gap" season with a bunch of veterans since the prospects aren't ready for full time and/or are in A/AA. This team is very old, so they could still produce and make the playoffs or completely fall off/get injured and fight to finish with a win total in the mid 80's. Huge question marks in Ichiro(production), Hafner(health), Youkilis(health, still a starter against RHP?), catcher, Jeter(recovery), Kuroda(coming off career high in IP), Pettitte etc.

I don't think they are strong enough to win the division. But I would expect them to fight Toronto for 2nd place and a WC spot.

Fenway Park, in Boston, is a lyric little bandbox of a ballpark. Everything is painted green and seems in curiously sharp focus, like the inside of an old-fashioned peeping-type Easter egg. What about Pineda in the pitching rotation? I know he missed all of last year, but he's still not healthy?

Still recovering, which is normal for the surgery he had. He began throwing last week, so without any setbacks he should return around May or June.

Yankees traded AAA outfielder/fringe prospect Abe Almonte to Seattle for reliever Shawn Kelley.

Kelly is signed for $935,000 for 2013 and has two years of team control left. Fastball sits 92-93 with a good slider. Finished with a 3.25 ERA in 47 innings last year. Has very good K/9, BB/9 and HR/9 rates. This is very good insurance if Aardsma isn't effective and for the future with Joba heading to free agency next off-season.

More conflict (as far as expectations) for me makes for a more interesting season.

I don't think that players like Hafner and Ichiro will max out and blow fans away with numbers, but I do think that with baseball it's more likely they'll cobble together a successful season and help the team get to the playoffs. DEPTH!

The catcher thing is unresolved. It's smart for the Yanks to play it as if they're going with what they have. Plenty of time before a paper catcher ruins the team. No need to panic yet. I'm sure that the pitchers will be satisfied with a great receiver over offense. Look for either a new guy at the end of March or Romine/Trade in June/July.

I had no idea they had signed Hafner either. I'm with you . I am not looking forward to this season either. I'm sticking w/my prediction in Non-NY thread . 84-78 tops

a .500 team?
No Way. I'll take the over on that range.
The Yanks are a good team that has a few weaknesses. Just like all the good teams. They'll be the Yankees again this year.

I'd love to be wrong and I usually am but I don't see it. Are they going to live and die by the HR again as they have in recent years? That's a recipe for another Divisional Series exit. They can't be considered a serious contender for a World Championship even if they make the playoffs(most likely as a Wild card team). What's Jeter going to do this yr? He's pushing 40 coming off a broken ankle. Last picture I saw of him he looked like he put on 25 lbs. Texeira's numbers have been dropping last couple of seasons and I don't like the way he's been trending .
Catching is a disaster. Our catchers are going to hit .150
I can see this lineup hitting about .235.Runs are going to be hard to come by and I don't think Yankees have the pitching staff to off set the lack of run production. CC will have to Cy Young like. Can Petitte win 15 games ? I don't know. Hughes? He's the little girl w/the curls. When he's good , he's good but when he's bad...........put it on a batting tee. He sucks! Rest of the starting rotation is a crap shoot. I'm not feeling it. If they are bad this yr , this generation of Yankee fans is not going to be able to handle it. They've never seen a bad Yankee team. They've been spoiled. I've watched the Yankees in the mid-late 60's when they sucked and the early 70's when they were starting to get a little better but were still just barely over a .500 team. I could deal w/a bad stretch.

Look for the Yankees to turn up their trade talk with the Cubs for Alfonso Soriano now. Blech.

BLECH is Right.

Melky Mesa!
Grandy will be back in May....it's not the end of the world. Sucks that he doesn't get a lot of innings in LF though.
This team is just going to have to get good pitching.
Let's all hope that CC is a lot stronger this year now that his elbow isn't screaming...for starters.

Johnny Damon said he'd take the league minimum to play the 5 or 6 weeks of the regular season that Granderson is out and then leave.

Johnny wants a foot in the door. I'd sign him to a minor league deal and let him beat out the others. Nothing more.

Francesa is in complete panic mode. laugh2.gif

He feels they should give up the farm and add someone like Morneau so the season doesn't implode before it starts. Sweeney was repeating the Cashman response that they could add a vet right before the season starts.

I hope they just hold onto their blue chips. If injuries do them in this year, then so what. That's what happens. They can't keep throwing money around if it doesn't guarantee them the World Series. And it doesn't. And it never did.

What a mess, I wish tanking was more effective in baseball. I guess they could trade some assets for prospects this season.

Edit: Attendance is gonna plummet because no one is gonna pay outrageous prices to see a bunch of mercenaries cash checks. Kevin Youkilis and Hafner as the 4-5. Jesus Christ. This team is basically worth watching for Sabathia, Robinson Cano, Rivera's last (?) year and that's it.

For the record, I don't think they should make any moves to "salvage the season." They're not winning anything this season. The only move they should make is framing A-Rod for some sort of murder to get out of his contract.

Baxter! Duda! Cowgill! You're 2013 New York Mets!

But I really hope they don't make a panic fucking trade. This team was old to begin with and no one is out for the season. We need to hang onto the highly touted prospects in the system to see if they can replace some of these old fucks in the coming years.

The team isn't going to suck. Granderson and Teixeira will be back early in the season. The pitching staff is healthy and deep. They should be in contention around the ASB and then it's time to survey the market and see if we can add a piece or two to aid a run. Otherwise go with what brought them and retool in the off-season.

It IS that simple, but they got a lot of drama to sell between now and June.

Baxter! Duda! Cowgill! You're 2013 New York Mets!

Heh, it's all about expectations. The Mets are expected to blow so it stings less.

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH! Shit, that's almost as a bad as the Sox lineup. Actually, it's worse! Fucking sweet. 4th place, here we come!

Fenway Park, in Boston, is a lyric little bandbox of a ballpark. Everything is painted green and seems in curiously sharp focus, like the inside of an old-fashioned peeping-type Easter egg. It was built in 1912 and rebuilt in 1934, and offers, as do most Boston artifacts, a compromise between Man's Euclidean determinations and Nature's beguiling irregularities. - John Updike

Didn't he divorce his wife while she was battling cancer? Sox pride!

OMG, you are right. He did! She was in the middle of chemo and he served her with papers. Man, he is just dreamy.

I am staying silent on all of this. This is the Yankees, they will always find a way to contend and to torment their haters. When they're mathematically eliminated, I'll relax. To quote a wise old sage, "never too far behind".

And if the Yankees did want to add a 1B I'd prefer Helton. He can still play the field, fits in the power/patience profile and can take over DH duties from Hafner(which moves Hafner to the lefty bat off the bench to PH for whoever is catching/playing LF).

This team is basically worth watching for Sabathia, Robinson Cano, Rivera's last (?) year and that's it.

........and that's assuming Cano (and Granderson) isn't suspended for his suspected PED use.
Edit: I predicted earlier 84-78 but it's possible if Cano and Granderson get suspended we're looking at .500 or just under. 79-83? It would be a crying shame to see Mo go out at the end of a shitty season.
