There are one or two songs on the album I don't love (ask Beardo about the underwear song), but "More", "Used to Be", and "Silent Weapons" are just great.

Never doubted the skill, just find it annoying.

Its the terrible, awful, too loud triggered drum sounds of metal records of the past 10-15 years that make you feel this way. A trigger is an electronic sensor that picks up the signal of you hitting the drum and sends an electronic drum sound to tape or through the sound system. It completely eliminates any sort of dynamic range, or need to hit the drums properly. When the dude goes into some of those 16th note runs in that songs it doesnt even sound like bass drums. It sounds like guns. Most kids that would buy that record would think that's cool. I dont care, I think it sounds like dog shit.

Listen to the drums on that record, and than listen to Raining Blood. There's the difference between real drums to tape, and sound replaced, cut and pasted on the computer grid, crap like that.

It is pure speed doing that, but the nature of the sampled drums makes it so much easier because it takes consistency of hitting out of the equation. If I tap the kick drum, its going to make the sampled, loud noise on a triggered drum. With the trigger off, it just sounds like a tapped the bass drum lightly. To make a real good kick sound, I have to hit the fucking shit out of the drum. Now apply this to playing blast beats and crazy double bass 16th note runs, and what you have is just a bunch of cheating.

So, not questioning this particular guys timing, speed or skill, but it certainly is easier these days.

And, only the dude engineering the record would know, but say that dude's playing was a mess.. Digital audio recording programs are designed to work on an XY grid so that you can paste every hit onto the grid and make it as perfect and as fast as you want.

I'm not accusing this drummer of that, just a world in which I hate the way metal and rock drums sound these days.

I see what you're saying. Kind of a like an electronic trigger on a paintball gun. You can just tap the trigger lightly and the electronics take care of the double action of releasing the bolt and resetting the release mechanism into place where as on a manual trigger each action requires a full pull and a full release of the trigger.

Haven't had a chance to listen to any music for a few days, and just fired up the War on Drugs album, "Slave Ambient". Funny, with a few days off, I like it even more than I did for the first few listens.



EDIT: It's mostly 3-4 songs that I love. Some of the rest can be a little dull, or just background music.

Has anyone given the Battles album a few listens? I love this one song, but really did not like the rest of the album at all.



I wanted to like it more, but just couldn't get into it. It's probably the lack of vocals on most tracks that kills it for me. Maybe they will be better live or it will grow on me. They're playing Webster Hall in November, I think.

Wilco's new album was streaming the other day on their website. It is slated for release in a few weeks.

I decided to be a douchebag and download it anyway. Those motherfuckers have still got it. Definitely in a similar mold as "A Ghost is Born." Lots of distorted guitar solos. Really, really digging it so far.

In other news, The Red Hot Chili Peppers' new album is so mediocre I can't even stand it. It sounds like they just decided to release a new album, but didn't care enough to actually put any effort into it. I didn't love Stadium Arcadium, but at least it had a few memorable tracks. The new album is just so meh.

But, to end on a happy note, get Wilco's new album.
