Krugman had a good piece in the Times today saying that the more context you give Romney's quote, the worse it becomes:

Well, yes/no.

While Obama is going to get to strut a little here he will be restrained. He will state that things are improving but we have a ways to go. If he toots his own horn it will look detached. If he plays it too low key he will be playing into the playbook of the GOP: he is an ineffective President.

Romney/Gingrich will pull an unverifiable and arbitrary number about "real" unemployment in order to white wash the facts. That means coming up for a number of the people who have stopped looking for work. They will say its 15.9% or a number like that. Where does the number come from??? Who cares, they will quote some right-wing think tank with an innocuous name like American Enterprise Institute, or the Brookings Institute. They will make up some funky matrix and it will sound good but it will be bullshit.

This will be followed up with an onslaught of campaign media launched by the candidates super PACs.

I really do not buy this notion that the longer the race for the nomination draws out, the better, or that nominating Gingrich or Santorum would help Obama because those two would alienate moderate (i.e., remotely sane) voters. They are both completely insane, and I want them put down as soon as possible. Let alone what it says about our country that a sizable percent of the population is OK with those two representing them. I don't want there to be any chance, however remote, that we wind up with either of them in the presidency.

Agreed but, I still think Romney is an inevitability at this point and while this primary competition likely won't hurt him, I suspect it is symptomatic of something that will hurt him and that's that the more people get to know him, the less they like him.

Thank you. Seriously. This is my biggest concern. I don't want either of those two in the Oval Office and it's the same reason Perry scared the crap out of me.

No, while that 8 year old certainly seemed capable of intercontinental marshmallows, I highly doubt he'd manage to develop inter-celestial-body marshmallow capabilities.

Don't know where else to put this but the NJ State Senate voted 24-16 in favor of a bill that legalizes Gay Marriage. Christie is going to veto it, but NJ may potentially get a 2/3 vote to override that veto. If the other half of the legislature is as close to that 2/3 majority as the Senate, it could be a historic victory in my opinion.

Rick Santorum is now leading Romney in most national polls, including Michigan's polls.

I... just... don't even know anymore.

Although Santorum is polling about the same vs. Obama right now as Romney is, I'm still much more scared of Romney.

It would be funny how badly the Obama campaign machine would annihilate Santorum. It would be a bloodbath. All the crazy things he has said mixed with the massive amount of money and organization Obama has.

Why are conservatives so hot for Santorum? Why do all these "small government" types get so turned on by social conservatives who probably would want you to have your dick analyzed after sex to make sure only your wife's DNA was on it?

Edit: I consider myself a liberal-leaning independent who would rather vote for someone other than Obama - I don't like his handling of a variety of security/drug/other policies - but if it's Santorum? I will fucking campaign for Obama.

I feel like Santorum is too far right to have any genuine chance against Romney or Obama. He's just the next flavor of the week for Conservatives who hate Romney. It's happened with Caine, Gingrich, Perry, and Bachmann.

QUOTE(toph @ Feb 15 2012, 09:46 AM) *
I feel like Santorum is too far right to have any genuine chance against Romney or Obama. He's just the next flavor of the week for Conservatives who hate Romney. It's happened with Caine, Gingrich, Perry, and Bachmann.

On paper, Santorum is kind of the guy they've been looking for. Unlike Romney, he is an actual, dyed-in-the-wool, unwavering Conservative. Unlike Gingrich, his personal life does not make a mockery of his supposedly conservative morals. Unlike Perry, he is reasonably articulate. Unlike Paul, he is not Ron Paul.

Unfortunately, he's a fucking moon-bat and a proven political failure.

QUOTE(HDH)
He's better than the lincumbent.

It's funny, I was just about to say, "HDH, you've become reasonable in your old age -- Who do you like in this whole mess?" Were you simply unable to resist the lincumbent line or do you honestly prefer Santorum to Obama? Despite all of the disconnected from reality Secret Socialist rhetoric, from a policy perspective Obama is basically a Reagan era Republican. Santorum is a dangerous theocrat.

It's really, REALLY disappointing to see the candidates on the Republican side. There's not even a decent alternative option to President Obama right now.

I think Romney (who I do not prefer) has a chance in the general election ONLY if the country's economic situation worsens. And there are signs that it can get very bad before November. There is still room for siginificant downward decline in real estate, once the foreclosure machines actually get to, ya know, foreclosing on homes. Right now there are millions of homes with pending foreclosures and no movements whatsoever on them.

Additionally, this situation with Iran has a number of pitfalls associated with it. One is the obvious spike in gas prices, which negatively impacts nearly every aspect of every day life for average joe citizen. Secondly, I think because Obama has been a more-than-adequate wartime President (much to the consternation of the left-er side of his constituency), the potential for additional conflict, OR lack thereof as a cautionary tactic going into the election, can be spun against him.

This spending deficit is going to be hard to explain away, as well. (I'm not even commenting on it, just saying that it will be a hot button issue this year.)

He and the Democrats did a smart thing (even if possibly unintentional) by having most of the health care reforms go into effect post-election. It's come off of the forefronts of people's minds for now, until companies start dumping their health care coverage or whatever the actual impact will be.

I NEVER abstain from voting, and I won't again this year, but it will be tough to pull the lever in anyone's favor.

The interesting thing is that me and my wife were watching one of the debates and talking about that Santorum guy. "He seems level headed. A little too conservative but not the worst candidate on the right. He at least would give us something to think about."

Enter his anti woman shit and that killed it.

Then last night I he went off about reinstating, "don't ask don't tell," removing women's right to serve on the front line a mere 5 hours after General Odierno appeared before congress in support of this.

This guy is completely archaic when it comes to social issues.

That killed it for me.

And Romney is nothing more then the, "I'll say anything at all in order to become President." The man is John Kerry on steroids. His own opponents on debate stages are constantly giving him that "WTF" look every time he answers a question.

Santorum would be a great candidate...about 60 years ago.

...and this is the problem that I have with the GOP. They have a romantic view of the past. Something like a black and white "Leave it to Beaver" world where minorities didn't exist. The only latino was Lucille Ball's husband. Women cared for the children with an apron and on and on. This puritanical environment where morality was the order of the day and at worst the bad kids hung outside of the local ice cream shop. Its pure fantasy driven nostalgia. Its delusional.

They operate in part with the supposition that anyone not them is a heathen animal who is bent on raping their children, destroying the American Dream, and pissing on their parade. Look at these wild revisions of history that groups like the tea-party, Sarah Palin and a few others espouse and spread as some American gospel. Wrapped in an American Flag with a cross in one hand and a rifle in another. Riding through the towns with bells because the British were coming to take their guns.

They are woefully paranoid and think that their America is being infringed upon by outsiders. They romanticize a different America. They unabashedly use phrases like, "we are the real America." And that pisses me off. I AM EVERY BIT AN AMERICAN AS THEY ARE. I am a patriot. I love this country. I care about it. I believe that it has the power to affect some of the greatest changes for the betterment of mankind. Compared to other nations, we have so much potential.

When I go abroad, I don't always want to tell people that I am American any longer because I don't want to explain some of what has happened. We have a black President who didn't usher in a post racial era as I had hoped. It surfaced the ugly hatred and disgust of minorities and the worst of this country out of the closet. My conversations about America with some of my international colleagues make me feel almost apologetic for things like invasions of Iraq. Why? Because in my eyes, we have abused our moral authority and lost our humility and as a result people don't necessarily want to be like us, but not become us.

When I see the Right Wing candidates and the social agenda, it is this disconnect that I can not bridge. They say things like, "America's leader should never bow to a Saudi King." I am like WTF??? Where is America's humility nowadays. These people see humility as a weakness to be replaced with arrogance. They talk about "American Exceptionalism." But it is no longer earned. To them its more of, "you don't think America is exceptional?" And then they kick you in the face with a boot.

While they stand there screaming USA, USA waving a flag made in China, the world is passing us by. Education, manufacturing, R&D, engineering, medical, infrastructure and on and on.

This is why their "right wing social engineering" has caused me to look at even their good ideas and pause and say to myself, "oh, fuck that guy. He's insane."

And so, we don't need to go back 60-years. We need to go forward 20-years.

These guys produce such pessimism. Always talking in the negative. My Uncle works for NASA. He talks about the budget cuts and politicians who now look at what they do with a scowl. He brings up this great point to me. "America doesn't have dreams anymore." They see what we do as an unneeded expense. We put people on the moon for fucks sake and haven't been back since the 1970's. They invented the internet. They invented so many other things. Yes, private enterprise is important but most start-ups can't fund like NASA does. They take great ideas and make them something that private enterprise uses for the better part of everything.

And that is why I cannot go back to the RNC. They frankly, are just not progressive enough and are living in a dark time where America sucks because we have morally lost our way.

And that is how we end up with guys like Santorum, Romney, and Gingrich. They think that this is a great moral platform by which America should stand on. And it couldn't be a worse course for America.

They even were criticizing President Obama for meeting with Xi Jinping because he is not the head of state in China but a subordinate and that it is showing America as weak to the Chinese. VP Biden should have handled this. Well, Xi is about to become the leader of China and so why was it bad for an American President to welcome and open dialogue with the man who the US will have to deal with for years?

Arrogance...

I recognize that these people are out of touch with reality but, as with the recent contraception fight in congress, I wonder what is going through these pro-lifer's heads when they oppose contraception. Do away with contraception and you can garan-fucking-tee that the number of abortions will go up. I know they want to get rid of both but, realitistically, what the fuck do they think will happen if you get rid of contraception?

Just out of curiosity, how does he feel about vasectomy - or is it only female contraception that's problematic?

Probably against it, though he's very anti-female, so who knows? But if you read that snippet, anything that takes away from procreation is not OK with him. So I guess he'd say it's not cool. You have to have children when Jesus tells you to. (Are you reading this, Jenny?)

Edit: That's what's especially nutty. At least some lunatics are claiming that contraceptives are partially abortive, and trying to frame them as being as bad as abortion. (I.e. if a contraceptive allows fertilization but prevents the embryo from implanting, that's abortion!) But Santorum? He's on that super-special level where thou shalt not wasteth thy seed or whatever. Sex isn't ok if you're not a married couple ok with having kids.
