And yes, I did just make a semi-serious attempt at discussing two freestyle groups from the 80s.

If I wasn't about to begin 7 hours of lecture, I'd be more than happy to discuss this topic further. As it stands, I've got to get to class.

This one's for Mike B. Few women can convincingly rock a pink satin headband. Lisa Lisa did it with style.

I've been listening to The Band a lot lately. I liked some of their songs in the past, but I didn't know much about them. The more I've learned, the more I've gotten into them. I'm also a big fan of J-pop. Not the super-happy-fun type. The rock-pop influenced type. I'm a fan of Hyde, a talented rock musician. OK, yeah, he does look like a character from Final Fantasy, but so what? He makes good rock/pop music. hellokitty.gif

I have been listening to the new Pogues box set mostly these days. Also the new Beck album, the Joy Division re-releases, Violator by Depeche Mode, the entire Bright Eyes catalog, and alot of Death Cab.

I left my iPod on the plane from Hong Kong to Malaysia two weeks ago Luckily the airline picked it up and I will be able to get it back when I leave Penang tomorrow morning.

Paul,

When you're at home you might give Pandora a try. Bavoo mentioned it in another thread, and I've been a Pandora user for about a year or so now. It's good for introducing you to newer acts similar to those that you already like.

Thanks for the heads up.

Death to Los Campesinos is a great song. They remind me a little of the Black Kids.

Fleet Foxes on Letterman last night.

Also have been listening to Throw Me the Statue (less-known small time band). Saw them live 2 weeks ago and were a lot of fun.

I downloaded a bunch of albums this weekend (leaked albums by Calexico, Okkervil River and Conor Oberst plus the new John Mellencamp and the above recommended Black Keys album) and they are all good but none of them has grabbed me yet. Instead, I've still got The Verve, Live in Glastonbury 2008 stuck in heavy rotation in my car, going on a week now. (That last one is an internet spcial, not an official release.) I'd never listened to the Verve before, I just new their two hit singles, so this was a pleasant surprise.

Fans of turntabalism should check out the two disk Steinski retrospective that was recently released. (What Does It All Mean?: 1983-2006 Retrospective.) The first disc is indeed a retrospective and the second is a 73 minute mix he did for the BBC in 2003.) I wasn't familiar with Steinski before I listened to this this weekend and I loved it. It reminds me of The Avalanches (who supposedly have a new album coming out this year.)

Well, there IS a fine line between clever and stupid...and, well, Judas Priest has crossed it, sadly.

If they wanted to do something like this, they should smoke the stuff Steve Harris and Neil Peart smoke - at least their epics, are, you know, cool. Or at least not as cornball.

I kinda saw this coming at the end of Angel of Retribution when they ended with a 13 minute song about the Loch Ness monster. JP just aren't good enough to stray from what they do best and get away with it. Just make another Painkiller boys, don't get fancy.

Try the recordings with Coltrane, either the studio sessions or the Carnegie Hall concert. I'd try to explain what they sound like, but it's pretty impossible to categorize.

I also love the trio recordings from the early 50s that I mentioned in the jazz thread, and I see that he also made a recording with Art Blakey at around the same time he made the ones with Trane. I've actually never heard that session, but I imagine it'd be great.

Do you like Brubeck? I finally found someone that I can listen to and enjoy. Dave Brubeck Quartet is that.

I picked up Jazz at Oberlin on vinyl...hooboy!! I also have been listening to the Brubeck selections in Ken Burns Jazz series. Good stuff.

Next I want to snag "Time Out".

Andy - Shame on you - You may have grown out of The Doors , but to be called over rated is an injustice of epic proportions. They have influenced so many bands over the years and will continue to do so. Morrison as a lyricist ranks up there with the best. They meshed so many styles of music and were able to produce music like no had before , and no one since has been able to do.

No joke. I took my wife to see them at Jones Beach yesterday, and I really got into the music. Maybe I'll lose my metal street cred, but I forgot how entertaining a rock concert could be.

Oh, and the new Impaled Nazarene. Because iron justice IS goat justice.

I gotta be honest, they sounded really tight, and Weiland's voice hasn't really lost anything. I mean, he's strung out as fuck, and the guitar player had this keith richards thing going on, but the music itself was pretty rocking.

I even enjoyed the two mini-jam sessions they had. I think they lost some of the audience with it, but I was kind of glad they did it, if only because they're probably bored with playing "plush" 75,000 times.

It was fun. High energy show. It brought me back to my awkward middle school days, which after the inital horror was actually a good laugh. I recommend going.

Thanks Ralph...and FWIW , you havent lost any metal street cred with me...your still the most metal of metal heads!! rockrock.gif

No joke. I took my wife to see them at Jones Beach yesterday, and I really got into the music. Maybe I'll lose my metal street cred, but I forgot how entertaining a rock concert could be.

Oh, and the new Impaled Nazarene. Because iron justice IS goat justice.

You talking about Manifest or do they have another one out I don't know about? I'm more an All That You Fear man myself, but it's all good.

The stupid commercial finally got to me, so I downloaded The Fratellis last night. Maybe best drunken iTunes purchase I've ever made. Really enjoying them.

No, I mean Manifest. I know it's been out for a while, but I haven't gone album shopping for a few months.

All That You Fear was what turned me on to them, but I've been a real fan of them ever since. I'm a sucker for Finnish bands, and guys who sound like they write their lyrics through babel fish. Oddly enough, these two things tend to go hand in hand, I find.

You can't find poetry like that just anywhere.

I've been on a big Monkees kick lately, both their albums and the show. The show is really brilliant. I used to watch it and like it when I was a kid, but as an adult there's lots of anti-establishment themes and stuff to pick up on. I plan on talking about it more in the "Watching" thread at some point. And their albums, I thought they made great music whether they were a phony band or not. Been listening to "The Porpoise Song" a lot yesterday and today, but I'm gonna knock it off because it's a melancholy song and it's giving me a downer...

My daughter has the box set w/every episode. She's thinks it's the greatest thing. I never missed the show when I was in junior high. My favorite Monkees song was Pleasant Valley Sunday ,but I remember in 8th grade being "in love" w/Mary Shanahan so I would sit in my room and listen to "Mary ,Mary" way too much. wub.gif

Listening to Cut Copy. Aussie band, 80s electronica style sorta like New Order.

Indeed. ABC spelled it "Iesha," though, so tell your wife that she doesn't have anything to worry about.

Ha - my wife has this album. It's an atrocity.
