Prodigy did a remix of the Foo Fighters' "White Limo."

I was kinda skeptical, but it's not bad.

M83s new album is REALLLLLLLLY good I know I've tried pimping his single here before, but seriously its worth it just for the intro alone (also because Zola Jesus shows up):

New Tom Waits is streaming on his site. You need an invite, but I think you only need to sign up for his mailing list to get one.

Hard to get a full read on it when I'm just listening while at work, but so far it seems like a return to some of his more playful 70s and 80s work, as opposed to the more ominous, emotionally dark sound of Mule Variations, Alice, and Real Gone.

This should be interesting - the inimitable David Dye will highlight the alt country movement on his show tomorrow afternoon, covering Uncle Tupelo, Son Volt, and Wilco: http://www.xpn.org/xpn-programs/world-cafe

Giving the Girls catalog a few spins, and can't quite decide whether I like it all. I think yes.

Anyone else get the new Coldplay album? Its totally cool to admit you like them.

Anyway, the album is pretty much what I expected (I heard them play half the tracks live a few weeks ago), but its still awesome. There are some nice surprises in there though which is nice.

Milagres' new album Glowing Mouth. Will likely end up in my 2011 top 10 list, or at least an HM slot.

Worth noting their previous album was called Seven Summits and was based on stories the group's leader was told by various climbing guides, so I'm pretty much a sucker now.

Checked out these guys tonight for a measly $6. They were definitely worth more even on a Monday night. They played at one of the smaller venues here and the place was barely half full. Weird. Reminded me a bit of Depeche Mode and Radiohead. I'd definitely see them again live.

The frog song (with the stupid French name I don't feel like writing) alone makes the album.

Its not one of those things you can just pick and choose songs too. The whole thing is just so expansive and so well done its ridiculous.

I've given the Coldplay album enough listens that I can say I really, really love it, but also really, really hate it at the same time. It's a shame because 95% of the album is fantastic, but a few songs just kill the whole mood when I listen to it. I'm sorry I don't ever want to hear Rihanna on a Coldplay album. Whoever thought this up, I just don't have words. It's frustrating because the whole thing could have topped their last 2 albums if it were for not one or two overproduced out of placed tracks. I honest feel like some of the more acoustic tracks (which I knew they wanted to go towards, but refused to believe they'd actually do until I heard the album) were recorded in 2000. Coldplay keeps trying to keep being more expansive and take over music, which shows their development of an artist and its fantastic to see where they've moved from Parachutes, but the way they do it one some of the songs is just horrible.

That being said I think this is definitely better than Viva La Vida if you take out Paradise (which I liked as a stand alone because it doesn't fit with the album in my opinion) and Princess of China (track with Rihanna). It's still no Parachutes or A Rush of Blood to the Head, but nothing else can be, which is fine.

Best Track on the album by far by the way:

Don't know if there are any Pavement fans in here, but Steven Malkmus' band released a new album this year, Mirror Traffic, and it is really good.

He has been doing solo stuff for a while now (which I just discovered these past couple months) and most of it is pretty fantastic.

White Denim released a 4-track EP a few weeks back, and it's more of their spacey, blues-tinged psychedelia, which is definitely a good thing. Doesn't look like any tracks are available on YouTube, but here's the Spotify URL: http://open.spotify.com/album/2zkqTMdXXDTkGvxQh0aDDf

I'd forgotten how good Garbage 2.0 is. That album is pretty much great from the first track to the last. One of my favorite Garbage tracks, however, is this B-side:

A friend of mine recently introduced me to Bruce Peninsula, and these guys are pretty wild. From their Wikipedia page: "their style has been described as 'a near indescribable and rousing potpourri of prog, gospel, folk, rock, pop and country.'"

New album coming out any day.

New album is called Open Flames, and it's really striking. Best listened to on better sound than what you can get from your laptop or desktop. It wasn't until I gave the album a spin in my car that I really appreciated it.

Watching one of my musical favorites, Lindsey Buckingham, butcher his own music during a concert on Palladia. I don't think anyone in the history of anything has misunderstood more about what made him appealing than he himself has. Everything that he's done (with the exception of "Holiday Road") is still the second greatest endorsement* for the power of cocaine.

*Aerosmith in the 70s being the first.

Also, just noticed a new series on VH1 Classic (or something): Metal Evolution. Might be interesting to some here, though I imagine it's not going to break new ground. In fact, let me summarize the first nine episodes -- "We were trying to rip off Judas Priest and Thin Lizzy."

And Motörhead. But, yeah, pretty much.

Klosterman on the new Metallica/Lou Reed album: http://www.grantland.com/story/_/id/714631...metallica-album

Holy tits, that's entertaining! Klosterman used to bug me many years ago, but man, that's a better review of anything I've read in a while. Gonna have to scan through his recent stuff now... er, tomorrow.

The first footnote alone is one of the funnier things I've read recently.

I've always liked Klosterman, especially back when he was writing columns for Esquire, even if I thought he was too much of a wordsmith for his own good. But I think one of his central premises in that review is wrong. Arresting creative development wasn't the only reason why the old big-label model sucked. It was also, more importantly in my view, that they charged us $20 for the resulting products of that assembly line, and controlled the channels for distributing the same. So the "democratization" of the music industry opens up more creative choices, yes, but it also allows artists who can't make gobs of money to get their music out there. In other words, Metallica and Lou Reed are both at points in their careers that they could do whatever the fuck they wanted, under the old or new record distribution models. "Lulu" has nothing to do with the shift. Pretty ironic that Klosterman would cite anything involving Metallica as an example of the democratization of the music industry, when they were one of the most notorious voices to resist it.

Meanwhile, I went to see Battles at Webster Hall last night. As I said earlier in this thread, I didn't exactly love the latest album on a first few listens, but appreciated the musicianship (especially of John Stanier, who is a madman), and figured it was something that I would appreciate more live. Suffice to say, that was correct, because they were great. I was wondering how they were going to do the songs off Gloss Drop that had vocals, because it didn't seem likely that they would bring the guest vocalists along for the tour to sing one song each. They got around that by playing over vocal tracks, and having big screens showing videos of the artists. Sounds gimmicky, but it was actually very cool. Doesn't look like there are any YouTube pics up yet, but will post a pic if I remember to.

I'd forgotten how good Garbage 2.0 is. That album is pretty much great from the first track to the last. One of my favorite Garbage tracks, however, is this B-side:

*gasp* How did I not know this song? I love Garbage.
And Garbage 2.0 is my favorite of their albums too. I saw them play during their tour for that album on my college campus, which was incredible. Seeing them live hooked me more on their music and made me fall more in love with that album.
