Yeah, it's a good list for sparking discussion but some of their choices are head scratchers...

-- How do you list two albums by Ted Leo but leave Shake The Sheets off? Shake The Sheets doesn't even crack their top 200? It's in my top ten and might even be at the top of my list.

-- Modest Mouse has made two absolutely brilliant records in the past decade but The Moon & Antartica is not one of them. Seriously, Good News For People Who Like Bad News doesn't crack the top 200 at all? But Dirty Projectors' Bitte Orca comes in at 56th?!

-- I appreciate all of the love for Spoon but it's curious that Gimmie Fiction isn't among the list of Spoon albums they choose to include. It's become my favorite Spoon album.

-- LCD Soundsystem's Sound of Silver ranks higher than their first album?! Madness. Sound of Silver is complete shit while the first album is pretty great.

-- The following four albums should be ranked higher:

174. Okkervil River- Black Sheep Boy
171. The Go! Team- Thunder, Lightning, Strike
158. Destroyer- Destroyer's Rubies
150. The New Pornographers- Twin Cinema

-- They are tooting their own horns by putting Arcade Fire's Funeral at number two. It was their hype that put the album on the map and, ironically, it was the subsequent popularity of the album that made people think Pitchfork was a great place to get new music recommendations. (I'm pretty neutral on Pitchfork myself. I've gotten good recommendations their in the past but they can be a bit much at times.) That said, while it's a good album, it doesn't belong anywhere near the top ten and, frankly, Neon Bible is a better album.

-- I'm still baffled at Shake The Sheets not making the list at all.

This is one of those objectively wrong opinions that can only be held by a contrary douchebag looking to score points for being part of the Zero Cool, I Liked Them Before They Got Big crowd.

This is the reason people hate Pitchfork.

Shake the Sheets is definitely better than Hearts of Oak. So is Tyranny of Distance.

At least one album by Beach House should be on there (my pick would be Devotion), as well as Yha hamaraa by Paavoharju. Color Wheel by Growing should be on there, too. Oh, and Let it Come Down by Spiritualized, their last good album.

I'm a fan of this Japanese group, Do As Infinity, also known as D.A.I.. They often go for a big, epic sound, and have a great singer in Tomiko Van. They actually broke up a few years ago, but got back together last year and put out a new record this year.

D.A.I. They know a hook when they hear it, so step back because they will use it. I'm hoping xcdude can translate the title of this song for me. I figure a song featuring images of babies, flowers and mountains (and wild kitties) is about "Saving the Earth", or something environmentally-minded like that? scratch.gif I really love their music, so I don't care that I can't understand the language.

FL's Yoshimi should have been higher than 67.

Kid A (to me, at least) was unlistenable.

I dunno I think that Moon and Antarctica and Lonesome Crowded West were their best albums.

And only 1 Bright Eyes record and no Death Cab? This list is poop! Pitchfork is annoying anyway.

Who was it that mentioned Living Colour's new CD earlier in the thread - Sed? Anyone have any thoughts?

Just picked up tickets for their show in NYC on 10/30. Looking forward to it, hadn't realized that they'd been playing a lot together over the last few years. I saw them twice back in the early 90s, and they were unbelievable.

Heh, what a coinkidink - I just ordered their new album off of Amazon (free shipping!).

Loved their first two records, I must say. I never had the good fortune of catching them live, but I did almost get into a fight with Vernon Reid.

No, seriously - He was playing with two other guitarists in some bizarre, artsy-fartsy avante garde fusion trio at the Knitting Factory, producing some of the most godawful drones and noise. His effects racks and amps of gear were stacked precariously high and unbalanced, leaning in all sorts of directions. Midway through the crap they were playing, his entire stack of Marshalls and effects falls right over, bringing the show to a screeching halt.

Being the classy guy that I am, I thought Mr. Reid and co. should have gone all the way and integrate this little disaster into the show. "Smash your guitar," I yelled out. Well, he didn't find my joke funny, and over the mic threatened to kick my ass. Being a 5'6", 170 lbs. ball of Russo-Puerto Rican fury, I, fueled no doubt by several alchoholic beverages, was unphazed at a threat from a tall black man (a musician - pfft), and yelled out, "Oh yeah, tough guy?"

Eventually, a bouncer got involved and told us both to calm down (suprisingly, I wasn't ejected) and after the gear was repaired, the show continued. Anyhow, after the show, I decided to be the bigger man and apologized to Reid, to his face, for being an epic douche. He shook my hand, and said "It's all good, man - I was pissed that all my shit fell over, that's all." He even signed my ticket stub when it was all over and done!

I have a few of those albums, which makes me feel good about not being totally lost.

I won't argue the ranking, but I love Mastodon's "Leviathan." Also didn't notice, and they probably lose points from the purists for being generally cheesy, but Slipknot's "Subliminal Verses" is probably the best metal album of the 2000s, in the sense of being both metal and hard-rock accessible.

Ben Folds and Nick Hornby are collaborating. Ben played three songs from it the other night; no one recorded it where I was but here it is from another location.

Enjoyably talky at the beginning, and it's a good song.

A friend of mine is trying to find out who sang this obscure song:

Chorus: "It's dangerous to get this close
Dangerous is what scares me most, babe
Dangerous is my love for you
So dangerous"

It's evidently a male singer, and the song was out in the late 80's early '90's.

Anyone have any ideas?

There are few things in this world that make me happier than hearing new Foo Fighters.
Greatest hits album comes out next month and there are a few new tracks, including Wheels, which I really dig.

They have embedding disabled on the video, so you'll have to go over to YouTube for it:

What's taken you so long? The Blueprint is one of my favorite albums of all time.

And I'm easing into Muse and Matt & Kim.

Great album. Jay-Z is a beast.

Fenway Park, in Boston, is a lyric little bandbox of a ballpark. Everything is painted green and seems in curiously sharp focus, like the inside of an old-fashioned peeping-type Easter egg. It was built in 1912 and rebuilt in 1934, and offers, as do most Boston artifacts, a compromise between Man's Euclidean determinations and Nature's beguiling irregularities. - John Updike

Have we talked about the new Built To Spill album yet? I think it's their best since Keep it Like a Secret. They've got a few tracks from it on their MySpace page:

http://www.myspace.com/builttospill

'Highly recommended for fans.

Fans of folk might enjoy the first album from Mumford & Sons, Sigh No More. I like this one even better than the new Built To Spill. Here are a couple of tracks:

Meanwhile, let me save you all some pain. Taken by Trees and Wild Beasts are both fucking terrible.

To get the taste out of my mouth I've been listening to Miles Davis' Sketches of Spain which is blowing my mind as much today as it did the first time I listened to it.

Also, the new Flaming Lips has its moments.

Finally, for fans of Spanish guiter, check out Rodrigo y Gabriela:

Also great, track 5, "Life's a Dream" and track 10, "Things Fall Apart."

This is one of those albums that didn't strike me the first time through but which I can't get out of my CD player. I keep saying to myself, "When this ends I'm going to listen to X" but then it ends and I go, "Okay -- One more time."

Yeah, those are great tracks as well. Good stuff.

I'm not the biggest Modest Mouse fan but this video is interesting for sure...a little neat and disturbing. Lester's post about the fugu and live shrimp reminded me of this.
