As there were the first deals over the last days I think we should have a seperate thread again.
Kubina and Grossmann in Philly - they are loading up on D, aren't they? http://tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=388202 This post has been edited by LordPerth: Feb 18 2012, 06:47 PM -------------------- Of all the things I lost in my life I miss my mind the most (Graffiti, Westport, Ireland)

TSN has it that the Bolts traded Kubina for a 2nd, 4th, and Kalinski.
It kind of puzzles me as to the Rangers not managing to match that offer, thinking that Kubina was not at the top of their list. Makes me wonder who the hell is. -------------------- ![]() |

maybe Slats has read enough of these boards the past few weeks and has determined to "run what he brung" and not make some huge change. That would be a large vote of confidence for the roster, no? I mean, just because you can pick up somebody doesn't mean you have to... For me, it would be most enjoyable to have this team go into the playoffs unmolested by trades and swaps.

"Tim Harrer can help us, Boys, but I'm going to send him home." Kurt "Herbie" Russell That is a good point, and i am not looking for a significant roster shake-up. I just think that when you are in the playoffs, you need a lot of endurance. I don't think you can have Girardi and McD playing so many minutes where games can go into double, or even triple, OT. Getting that veteran d-man would really keep the endurance up for the blue-line, and give the Rangers better depth in case of injuries. -------------------- ![]() |

Contenders make an addition like every year. Pens did it. Bruins did it. Blackhawks did it. They should do SOMETHING because there are areas that could use improvement.

meh, I only mention it because there has been a lot of discussion this year about this team being more about the sum than the parts. For almost every wishlist player request there has been a counter argument fretting about fuckin' with the chemistry. Sure, most teams pick up new guys. Maybe we need a chart that shows how many deadline day pick-ups made the difference for their teams? Knowing that only one team can win it all each year, but at least 16 teams make these late season pick-ups so there may be some data that could reveal if the habit either benefits or wastes time. This probably already exists somewhere, but I'm, you know, not by a computer or anything...
After a season of hard earned points, I would not want have to give the credit for success to a late season pick-up. I'd rather win it with the guys that put in the time all year. But that's just me. -------------------- Special thanks go to Rick91981 for assistance in making the Official Judas Crease Hair Flip avatar a reality!

Editor's Note: The Blackhawks didn't actually make any additions, at ;east none that had any impact in the postseason (traded Cam Barker for Kim Johnsson, who promptly got hurt). -------------------- Batman uses women for sex and tactical advantages.

And...THEY'RE OFF!!
http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=388536 The Columbus Blue Jackets have traded veteran forward Antoine Vermette to the Phoenix Coyotes for a second round pick in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft (via Ottawa), a conditional fifth round selection in the 2013 Draft and minor-league goaltender Curtis McElhinney. |

Jesus. That's a lot for an underwhelming player like Vermette. You'd be surprised how well Vermette can play, and the Yotes need that speed in the middle, or on the wing. Like i said in another post, especially to xcdude, this year's draft is not that deep and teams are more encouraged to trade their first two rounders. -------------------- ![]() |

I wouldn't mind Slats getting RJ Umberger - he can play either center or wing, has good size, and prior to this disastrous season, has had 4 straight 20+ goal seasons (19 pts in 25 playoff games, FWIW).
Hopefully Slats won't hold any hard feelings. |

What i remember was that RJ was a dick with contract talks in Vancouver, and when joining the Rangers he was not well liked in Hartford. Apparently he was a dick. And when we left him to be a free agent he signed in Philly, and someone on the Rangers that year decked him or knocked him out, i think. RJ to NY? As good a chance as Gomez coming back. -------------------- ![]() |

While I'm at it...anyone interested in Mark Streit? One year left on his deal, might help the PP. Granted, I'm sure everyone here would rather vomit than trade with the Islanders, but maybe he can be had cheaply.

It makes no sense on their end to do it with what we would consider "cheap." The Islanders are in a bit of a PR nightmare right now, and trading their captain to the rival Rangers is probably as likely as Glen calling the Canadians up about Gomez. |

That little 8-1-1 run by Phoenix turned them into buyers. Good for them. Problem is, I think that'll make what... FOUR teams that are sellers now? Phoenix was never really out of it, they've been hovering around 8th for a while. Whitney was just some wishful thinking by some people around here. Actually, it's more like 2 obvious sellers, Edmonton and Columbus. Every other team in the league has a shot at the playoffs if they get hot and can manage to leapfrog a team or two. Even Carolina, 15th in the East, is only 8 points out of 8th. They need a few teams to stumble, but there's a hope there. Same goes for Montreal (7points out). |

I do think Phoenix was on the brink of becoming sellers. They were on a bit of a nosedive but they've since righted the ship. But anyway... This reminds me of something. Didn't they move up the trade deadline? I know teams would only have guys for like 20 games but with this day and age of OTL points, you're going to see this more and more. I mean hell, 23 out of 30 teams are over .500, and that doesn't count Anaheim that's .500 exactly. Only Edmonton and Columbus are more than 3 games under. Going to be hard to have big deadline days when as you say, the worst team in the East is a winning streak away from sniffing at a playoff spot. I hate to break it to fans of Montreal, Anaheim, et. al., but really, you're just rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic. I used to feel this way whenever the Rangers during The Dark Years would stage some late crazy rally and play themselves right up to the cusp of the playoffs, only to miss entirely and lose out on a good draft position.
Suppose those teams currently in the chase get in....why? So they can lose in 4 straight? MAYBE 6? Stop kidding yourself, guys. |

The way the Ducks are playing right now, nobody is going to beat them in 4. Nobody. They are playing the way they should have been playing all along, and woe to the team that gets them in round one. -------------------- Living and Breathing Rangers since '66

Because there's the thought that once you're in the playoffs, you're a hot streak away from contention. Also, playoff games are pure, huge revenue for teams. It also shows fans that there's hope for next season and that the team doesn't need to blow up. Actually, do you really see Toronto, Ottawa, or Florida going deep? I don't, that doesn't mean that the effort shouldn't be there to at least compete. |

Nah, I subscribe to the Kenny Rodgers School of Thought: Know when to fold them, know when to walk away, etc.

You're usually right, but hey if you follow the trends, a team that gets hot can go far. The Cardinals had a comeback that was incredibly rare and they took that momentum to a World Series title, beating big favorites along the way.
The Giants were 7-7 and left for dead, got lucky to get into the dance (Thanks Jason Garrett in Arizona), but then outplayed everyone en route to a Super Bowl title. I get what you're saying and the odds do not favor these teams. But, let's not forget some recent results in the NHL. 2006 saw a #8 seed Oilers get within an eyelash of a Stanley Cup. The 2010 Eastern Conference Finals were contested between the #7 seed Flyers and #8 seed Habs. I'd much rather be in the position the Rangers are in right now, but you never like seeing a team going on a .700 winning percentage type of streak heading into the postseason. -------------------- |

Nah, I subscribe to the Kenny Rodgers School of Thought: Know when to fold them, know when to walk away, etc. You're looking at it as a fan and not a business owner... It's silly for the Blue Jackets to be buyers. It is not silly for a team 6 points out of the playoffs to try and make a push, it's a sound business strategy. |

And yes, the response will be "but shouldn't the team look to the future to try and be better and make a run in upcoming years?" Risk reward. A team like the Islanders desperately needs to get into the playoffs. The likely hood of them advancing is pretty much nil, but the franchise, the team, the fans, the arena, merchandising, ticket sales...they need a playoff push. Then you have teams that theirs really no reason to assume they couldn't make the playoffs next year, so you go for a piece or stay pat, and you hope to get some money during a push, maybe even a first round appearance, and get ready to do it all again next year. |

This is a bit applicable to the Devils. The XM NHL guys were talking about (prior to their recent 10 game run mind you), that the Devils were not going to trade Parise. Why? Because the franchise absolutely needed to get at least two playoff gates.
In their opinion, it was more important to get those two playoffs games rather than trade Parise for prospects even if they knew they couldn't retain him come UFA season in July. -------------------- |

They will be the toughest opponent for the Rangers out of anyone in the East, I think. I'd rather face Pittsburgh than Montreal. -------------------- |

Hamarlik a healthy scratch tonight for Washington. He'd be a cheap and reliable veteran 3rd pair d option (say that 10 times fast)

He is having a shittier season than Boyle. -------------------- "I think Greatone is one more JKman talent evaluation or 101 trade proposal away from going on a killing spree."
