First Can, now Amon Düül II... damn Puck.

fireworks.gif fireworks.gif fireworks.gif

If you need more Krautrock recommends, just ask. But it's summertime and a good time for Tropicália...

So good it hurts.

Yeah - been diggin on Krautrock for a month or so - found a Krautrock sampler that included 12 "essential" albums. It included Can, Amon Düül II , Kraftwerk, Cluster , La Dusseldorf, Neu!, Harmonia, Walter Wegmuller, Grobscnitt, Faust, Guru Guru and Klaus Schulze.

Havent listened to all yet, but Can and Amon Duul II I can definitely dig.

Thanks for posting the Tropicalia also , Gal Costa and Caetano Veloso stood out to me. Definitely be checking more of them out.

Does Astrud Gilberto fall into that category also?

Kinda, but not really. It existed very briefly in late 60s Brazil and took bossa nova music (like Astrud), mixed it with psychedelia and threw in some poetry and politics. There were only 5-6 artists in the whole movement. Most of them kept making albums, but the Tropicalia sound stopped around '72. Takes a little while to warm up to, but it's such a great little-bit-of-everything sound plus really warm and friendly. Ideal for summertime.

#1 choice on my commute home yesterday evening: Paper Empire, the new one from Better Than Ezra.

#2 choice would have been Ezra.

I'm going to guess that most people here aren't big fans just from looking at the rest of the thread, but I picked up the new Dave Matthews Band album and it's good so far. Some happy songs, some sad ones, remembering the band member that passed away last Summer, Leroi. It's different from the last two albums and a lot more enjoyable than Stand Up, which I didn't like at all.

BTW, Sed, you do know that the Pet Shop Boys had a new one out in March, Yes. The Church put out Untitled #23, also in March (I don't have that one yet); Tori Amos had Abnormally Attracted to Sin out in May, KMFDM had Blitz out in March, Green day's 21st Century Breakdown was out May 15th, and Eric Clapton & Steve Winwood have Live from Madison Square Garden just out two weeks ago.

I think it was you who once mentioned listening to Ryuichi Sakamoto, formerly of Yellow Magic Orchestra (and a star of the film Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence) -- he released his latest, Out of Noise in March. smile.gif

I don't think DMB is accepted around these parts but I love them. I listened to it online when it was on pandora and I liked it. I''m hearing people say it might actually be their best yet. I heard some interviews where Dave admitted they got away from what they did best and this album is the return. I'm excited to sit down and really listen to it.

XCDude, it's a greatest hits CD -- I wouldn't really call it "new." It's a double disc, 25 cuts.

That's pretty funny actually because the CD I have, was burned straight from the vinyl copy of my buddy from works collection. You can hear the pops of the needle and everything. It even skips in certain places. It's the closest thing I'll get to the real deal.

Been going a little off the reservation lately

Social Distortion because Mike Ness is the man

Velvet Revolver because they were so far ahead of their time that we need six more years to catch up

Mars Volta because it is so off and odd and fun to put on the headphones at the office.

I saw Ministry at 1st Avenue in Minneapolis (the Purple Rain club) when they were touring for 'With Sympathy' - Jourgenson totally disavows anything and everything associated with that album now, but I remember it as a great show.

Today I am totally getting into Jesus and Mary Chain and the Pixies.

The Diry Projectors' new album, Bitte Orca, is fantastic. This song is my favorite off it:

The whole album is an amazing lush soundscape though so it's even better in context.

Aren't you in high school? In 2009? How are you listening to this? Did they release an auto-tune of "Candle" or something?

"Daydream Nation" is a watershed alternative album, but as mentioned the only Sonic Youth I keep in regular rotation is "Sister." It's dreamy rainy-day music.

I just bought Around the Well by Iron & Wine. It is a 3 LP set of B-Sides and Rarities. Pretty much every song is awesome. "The Trapeze Swinger" takes up an entire LP side and is one of the best songs I have ever heard (It is also on the In Good Company soundtrack). If you like folk music, the first half is all home recorded, just Sam Beam and his guitar. The second half is more studio stuff with a full band. There are also some pretty good covers: "Love Vigilantes" by New Order, "Waiting on Superman" by the Flaming Lips, and "such Great Heights" by The Postal Service.

Are you listening to the new one or older stuff? The new one just leaked this week and I like it so far. (I'm only 6 songs in.)

Mostly Begin To Hope. A lot of her really early stuff is way too a capella for me.

Ah, then you may not like the new one.

Her older stuff is a real mixed bag. There are some great songs and some really, really annoying songs.
