With the election now over and done with, I figure it's time to create a new thread.

There is some talk on the news wires today that some Republicans seem to be softening on the Norquist tax pledge. First I saw a blurb about Lindsay Graham doing away with it for the good of the country, and now I saw this posted on facebook.

Apparently Eric Cantor is now potentially softening on the stance. All of this is don't believe it until you see it, but maybe, just maybe we could see some sanity here.

Pre-emptive victim emerges.

Given what I read by the documents released by NBC 2-weeks ago it was very clear that the President was willing to go deep into DNC cornerstones to make a deal. And the fact that the GOP claimed that the President wasn't wiling to be serious about it shows me that claim was dubious at best. Sorry, but the wantan scorch the earth policy of obstruction lies at the feet of the GOP as far as I see it. Shameful.

I think Cantor could've controlled the GOP in the Senate to accept a deal but I don't think that Boehner had any chance against the hard liner tea-baggers who just elected a bunch of Norqvist slaves. Even Marco Rubio who was an ardent supporter of heavy tea-bag leanings got to Washington and realized he needed more flexibility. And of course many tea-baggers roundly called him a Judas.

So the radical elements of the GOP held the country hostage since the midterms. Just look at the obstruction. The stats are what they are:

Up until 2001 the number of times the filibuster was used roughly 60-80x (a stat that I thought was unacceptable.) the GOP since Obama took office used it 139, 137, and 104. That's a stat the GOP should feel shame about. Yet, McConnell stated very clearly that the goal of the GOP should be to make the president a 1-term guy.

Now the country spoke loud and clear. They sent the President back to Washington with a clear mandate and should he be completely stymied I will blame the GOP 100%. The idea of austerity is showing all over Europe to be failing. Static GDP etc...

The bipartisan press conference was to try to develop some confidence for the markets that the government can avoid the fiscal cliff. Right after the president won, the market took a dive. Why? Most felt that the problem of gridlock would continue to produce ambiguity.

So now it's up to the President to put the same deal down on the table and the job of Boehner to put it down and get it signed. If the President uses the political upper ground to revise the deal in the DNC favor I'll hold the DNC accountable and will almost certainly look to get my representatives to pay the price at the voting booth.

Personally, I fear the political pussy move is going to happen: kick the can down the road. No Bowles-Simpson or any modification or grand bargain. Because we have political pussies. And this will be followed up with the coming attempt to impeach him over Benghazi.

I've got pretty mixed feelings about this filibuster debate.

On the one hand, I think it needs to change. It's stupid that you need 60 votes to get anything done in the Senate. It's getting used at an absurd rate, pretty effectively limiting anything that can happen in the Senate.

On the other hand, McConnell is right, the Democrats can't use the nuclear option to change it. They would lose all credibility, and would make it near impossible to form any kind of bipartisan consensus in the near future.

GOP should shut the fuck up and let the Dems do the work. It's a Pilate move, but the Dems have a plan, they've been re-elected, so be it. Leave the responsibility in their hands. I am also just sick and tired of seeing nothing get done.

So by me saying that Republicans have made gestures of bi-partisanship is a sign of the thread already attacking the GOP.

Number 1, stop trolling.

Number 2, stop playing the victim.

Number 3 and the most ironic one, the big reason why there will be attacks and arguments about the GOP is you looking for a fight.

Personally I would LOVE to see the Republicans be grown ups here and come to the table and work out a deal. The country is better off here when two parties put politics aside and help Americans.

I have tried to stay away from these debates and from this site because of what I call the dumbing down of the United States. A good number of you don't comprehend or realize the great country we live in. No political system is perfect, yet a good majority of population seem to think capitalism is bad and fiscal restraint ideals are radical. By not inform you of the facts the media is playing a huge roll in this situation.

The 1st of the two links provide ample federal, state and city historical financial data on budgets, taxes, spending, debt, etc. The 2nd link is from White House and is a more simple federal look. As you look at federal receipts one sees that the United Steates doesn't have a revenue problem. We have a spending problem. At every opportunity Democrats demonize the Bush tax cuts, yet they have serve to placate and fund the continuous rise in federal spending.
How many of you know revenues (tax receipts) are up in last two years and were up for most of W Bush's administration?
How many of you know every single year under the Obama administration the United States has run over $1 trillion deficit?

Taxing the so called rich as every Democrat and President Obama are singing today will not even make a dent on the deficit, let along on our federal spending. You have a $1.3+ trillion deficit forecasted for thsi upcoming year. The forecast revenue from these new taxes will probably not amount to anything over $100 billions. The receipts will still lag the spending. You don't need a finance degree from UPenn Wharton Business School to understand this math. the president and the Democratic party represent the bloated federal government. They have run on this charade that by having the "rich" pay their "fair" share our financial books will magically be balanced. They have run on a platform their philosophy is the best and there is no good in any other alternative philosophy. They have had the majority of the voting population believe the Republican Party wants to throw our grandparents's wheelchair over the cliff, take away women contraceptives, starve children, and destroy the enviroment. We used to be, yes used to be, a country that thought for ourselves, did not sold out blindly to a special interest group or politicalparty, and were able to disiminate and undertand the opposition. We have become Pavlov's dog. We are nowadays easily persuaded by a cheap campaign and or similar to Third World countries, class warfare. The president and his Democratic Party colleagues are making utopian promises that nobody else has been able to deliver. A majority in this country are so convinced and blindly persuaded by their philosophy that all they see is evil in the Republican position of limited government and financial restraint that tehy will never consider it. The president and Democrats demonize a "rich" person because she or he pays a tax rate less than a secretary. Are we so blindy to realize that "rich" person is paying millions or hundreds of thousand in taxes vs. a person that probably pays a couple thousand of dollars. IRS regulatiosn are now called loop holes. Are we so stupid to understand the top 10 percent earners in the United States pay close to 50 percent of yearly tax revenues? Are we so stupid not to realize the bottom 50 percent of earners contribute less than 10 percent of yearly federal reveues?

Point me to a Democrat willing to put entitlements on teh debt reduction discussion.

Mr. Durbin's position is exactly the same as of the president and every single Democrat. The bipartisan Bowles-Simpson recommendations proposed making structural changes to entitements and is the reason President Obama wont even make it as his starting dialogue point for debt reduction negotiations.
Republican leaders like Speaker Boehner have been poor in making the case for fiscal restraint. Some Republicans are now open for tax increases and the question is why? Other than our inability to live within our means what financial factor says that any type of taxes should be raised? Financial data shows revenues to be increasing. The Republicans have been duped into raising taxes and establishing new social programs (Bush's prescription drug program ) before only to pay later at the voting booth. Fuck it, even though defense cuts, which is only about 18 percent of total federal spending, but would contributes 50 percent of cutsl under the fiscal cliff scenario, I would say let the so called fiscal cliff take place. It would be better than any deal Speaker Boehner and Senate Minority Leader McCallum will agree to. Republicans agree to tax increase and the question becomes what exactly does the party stands for? And what is so bad goingto back to Bill Clinton federal tax rates? Why are Democrats afraid of? You see, the Bush tax cuts benefitted the "rich", it also substantially lowered the rate on low and middle earners, the majority who voted early this month for another 4 years of President Obama administration. The Republican leadership are setting themselves for situation where gimmicks will be in place for debt reduction, USA will still borrow 25-30 percent to operate its bloated government, and along the way President Obama will basically destroy their party. Instead of surrendering I recommend Republicans blitzing the air ways and make the case for fiscal retraint and how lower taxes spurs not only wealth creation, but more importantly, contributes greatly to government coffers (see Kennedy, Reagan and W Bush years). Our economy is moribund today. President Obama himself admitted a couple of years ago raising taxes on a bad economy is not a good move. Taxes needed to fund the Affordable Health Care program will kick in this coming year. Our debt is over $16+ trillions. The bill to service that debt is over $1/4 of a trillion dollar per year. Remember, once at some point those bond holders will want a bigger return. Increasing our debt ceiling, as Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner have recommended will expedite this train wreck. If President Obama and his fellow Democrats are not serious and unwilling to structurally tackle entitlements, which amount to about 50 percent of our yearly federal spending, then let secrestration take place. Temporary band-aid or kicking the can will only expedite our unsolvency. It is our duty to leave our kids a more prosperous place than we inherited from our predecessors. We should not leave a country that is envious of our neighbors' posessions. We should not leave them a place that doesn't reward aspiration to maximize our individual talents. We should be the best we can be without worrying going above some government placed financial threshold that collects more of our physical labor. Independency from government is not a radical idea. It is the idea that founded and made this country great. American apoyee greatness was reached when it landed a man on the moon and brought him safely back. The forces of "fainess" and "equality" have gained persuasion since within the voting block. Somehow the crumbling European model, which is crumbling, is gaining traction. We can't spend money we don't have. We have to do with what we have. Those are basic ideas of enjoying a successful life that many today for some reason do not and can not comprehend. President Obama and Democrat have not identified a single entitlement program with respective quantifiable reduction. Taxing the "rich" approach has been and will continue to be their sole proposal. Financial data shows revenues is not the problem, yet raising taxes is the approach to reduce debt and reign in our spending. I guess they are not teaching basic economics in high schools nowadays.

People think unrestrained capitalism is bad. And they're right, it is. The form we are implementing in the US today is clearly failing and not sustainable. The form we implemented from the 40s-70s was a much stronger version.

Also, it's fucking idiotic that people say "we don't have a revenue problem, we have a spending problem."

1) It's the same goddamn thing. Problems have multiple solutions. And cutting spending is often a bad one. When a corporation isn't making enough money they can either find a way to make more money or they can cut back. Plenty of companies have found that cutting back on spending just leads to a death spiral. "We aren't making enough money on our biscuits so let's cut back on the amount of flour we add, water is cheaper! Wait, now biscuit sales are dropping again, people don't like the watered down biscuits, so we need to water them down more to make up for the dropping revenues! Wait, crap, now we're selling even less!"

2) Our deficit issue is nowhere near as big a deal as our Reagan-redistributed-our-wealth issue. People aren't spending enough money because most of them don't have money to spend and few of them have far too much money to spend. We need to get money into the hands of more people. This is a revenue issue for the government. Reagan fucked us by redistributing our wealth. Reducing government spending will just add to our entire not-enough-money-is-being-spent issue

I have tried to stay away from these debates and from this site because of what I call the dumbing down of the United States. A good number of you don't comprehend or realize the great country we live in. No political system is perfect, yet a good majority of population seem to think capitalism is bad and fiscal restraint ideals are radical. As you look at federal receipts one sees that the United Steates doesn't have a revenue problem. We have a spending problem. At every opportunity Democrats demonize the Bush tax cuts, yet they have serve to placate and fund the continuous rise in federal spending.
How many of you know revenues (tax receipts) are up in last two years and were up for most of W Bush's administration?
How many of you know every single year under the Obama administration the United States has run over $1 trillion deficit?

Taxing the so called rich as every Democrat and President Obama are singing today will not even make a dent on the deficit, let along on our federal spending. You have a $1.3+ trillion deficit forecasted for thsi upcoming year. The forecast revenue from these new taxes will probably not amount to anything over $100 billions. The receipts will still lag the spending. You don't need a finance degree from UPenn Wharton Business School to understand this math. the president and the Democratic party represent the bloated federal government. They have run on this charade that by having the "rich" pay their "fair" share our financial books will magically be balanced. They have run on a platform their philosophy is the best and there is no good in any other alternative philosophy. They have had the majority of the voting population believe the Republican Party wants to throw our grandparents's wheelchair over the cliff, take away women contraceptives, starve children, and destroy the enviroment. We used to be, yes used to be, a country that thought for ourselves, did not sold out blindly to a special interest group or politicalparty, and were able to disiminate and undertand the opposition. We have become Pavlov's dog. We are nowadays easily persuaded by a cheap campaign and or similar to Third World countries, class warfare. The president and his Democratic Party colleagues are making utopian promises that nobody else has been able to deliver. A majority in this country are so convinced and blindly persuaded by their philosophy that all they see is evil in the Republican position of limited government and financial restraint that tehy will never consider it. The president and Democrats demonize a "rich" person because she or he pays a tax rate less than a secretary. Are we so blindy to realize that "rich" person is paying millions or hundreds of thousand in taxes vs. a person that probably pays a couple thousand of dollars. IRS regulatiosn are now called loop holes. Are we so stupid to understand the top 10 percent earners in the United States pay close to 50 percent of yearly tax revenues? Are we so stupid not to realize the bottom 50 percent of earners contribute less than 10 percent of yearly federal reveues?

Mr. Durbin's position is exactly the same as of the president and every single Democrat. The bipartisan Bowles-Simpson recommendations proposed making structural changes to entitements and is the reason President Obama wont even make it as his starting dialogue point for debt reduction negotiations.
Republican leaders like Speaker Boehner have been poor in making the case for fiscal restraint. Some Republicans are now open for tax increases and the question is why? Other than our inability to live within our means what financial factor says that any type of taxes should be raised? Financial data shows revenues to be increasing. The Republicans have been duped into raising taxes and establishing new social programs (Bush's prescription drug program ) before only to pay later at the voting booth. Fuck it, even though defense cuts, which is only about 18 percent of total federal spending, but would contributes 50 percent of cutsl under the fiscal cliff scenario, I would say let the so called fiscal cliff take place. It would be better than any deal Speaker Boehner and Senate Minority Leader McCallum will agree to. Republicans agree to tax increase and the question becomes what exactly does the party stands for? And what is so bad goingto back to Bill Clinton federal tax rates? Why are Democrats afraid of? You see, the Bush tax cuts benefitted the "rich", it also substantially lowered the rate on low and middle earners, the majority who voted early this month for another 4 years of President Obama administration. The Republican leadership are setting themselves for situation where gimmicks will be in place for debt reduction, USA will still borrow 25-30 percent to operate its bloated government, and along the way President Obama will basically destroy their party. Instead of surrendering I recommend Republicans blitzing the air ways and make the case for fiscal retraint and how lower taxes spurs not only wealth creation, but more importantly, contributes greatly to government coffers (see Kennedy, Reagan and W Bush years). Our economy is moribund today. President Obama himself admitted a couple of years ago raising taxes on a bad economy is not a good move. Taxes needed to fund the Affordable Health Care program will kick in this coming year. Our debt is over $16+ trillions. The bill to service that debt is over $1/4 of a trillion dollar per year. Remember, once at some point those bond holders will want a bigger return. Increasing our debt ceiling, as Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner have recommended will expedite this train wreck. If President Obama and his fellow Democrats are not serious and unwilling to structurally tackle entitlements, which amount to about 50 percent of our yearly federal spending, then let secrestration take place. Temporary band-aid or kicking the can will only expedite our unsolvency. It is our duty to leave our kids a more prosperous place than we inherited from our predecessors. We should not leave a country that is envious of our neighbors' posessions. We should not leave them a place that doesn't reward aspiration to maximize our individual talents. We should be the best we can be without worrying going above some government placed financial threshold that collects more of our physical labor. Independency from government is not a radical idea. It is the idea that founded and made this country great. American apoyee greatness was reached when it landed a man on the moon and brought him safely back. The forces of "fainess" and "equality" have gained persuasion since within the voting block. Somehow the crumbling European model, which is crumbling, is gaining traction. We can't spend money we don't have. We have to do with what we have. Those are basic ideas of enjoying a successful life that many today for some reason do not and can not comprehend. President Obama and Democrat have not identified a single entitlement program with respective quantifiable reduction. Taxing the "rich" approach has been and will continue to be their sole proposal. Financial data shows revenues is not the problem, yet raising taxes is the approach to reduce debt and reign in our spending. I guess they are not teaching basic economics in high schools nowadays.

I have tried to stay away from these debates and from this site because of what I call the dumbing down of the United States. A good number of you don't comprehend or realize the great country we live in. No political system is perfect, yet a good majority of population seem to think capitalism is bad and fiscal restraint ideals are radical. By not inform you of the facts the media is playing a huge roll in this situation.

The 1st of the two links provide ample federal, state and city historical financial data on budgets, taxes, spending, debt, etc. The 2nd link is from White House and is a more simple federal look. As you look at federal receipts one sees that the United Steates doesn't have a revenue problem. We have a spending problem. At every opportunity Democrats demonize the Bush tax cuts, yet they have serve to placate and fund the continuous rise in federal spending.
How many of you know revenues (tax receipts) are up in last two years and were up for most of W Bush's administration?
How many of you know every single year under the Obama administration the United States has run over $1 trillion deficit?

Taxing the so called rich as every Democrat and President Obama are singing today will not even make a dent on the deficit, let along on our federal spending. You have a $1.3+ trillion deficit forecasted for thsi upcoming year. The forecast revenue from these new taxes will probably not amount to anything over $100 billions. The receipts will still lag the spending. You don't need a finance degree from UPenn Wharton Business School to understand this math. the president and the Democratic party represent the bloated federal government. They have run on this charade that by having the "rich" pay their "fair" share our financial books will magically be balanced. They have run on a platform their philosophy is the best and there is no good in any other alternative philosophy. They have had the majority of the voting population believe the Republican Party wants to throw our grandparents's wheelchair over the cliff, take away women contraceptives, starve children, and destroy the enviroment. We used to be, yes used to be, a country that thought for ourselves, did not sold out blindly to a special interest group or politicalparty, and were able to disiminate and undertand the opposition. We have become Pavlov's dog. We are nowadays easily persuaded by a cheap campaign and or similar to Third World countries, class warfare. The president and his Democratic Party colleagues are making utopian promises that nobody else has been able to deliver. A majority in this country are so convinced and blindly persuaded by their philosophy that all they see is evil in the Republican position of limited government and financial restraint that tehy will never consider it. The president and Democrats demonize a "rich" person because she or he pays a tax rate less than a secretary. Are we so blindy to realize that "rich" person is paying millions or hundreds of thousand in taxes vs. a person that probably pays a couple thousand of dollars. IRS regulatiosn are now called loop holes. Are we so stupid to understand the top 10 percent earners in the United States pay close to 50 percent of yearly tax revenues? Are we so stupid not to realize the bottom 50 percent of earners contribute less than 10 percent of yearly federal reveues?

Mr. Durbin's position is exactly the same as of the president and every single Democrat. The bipartisan Bowles-Simpson recommendations proposed making structural changes to entitements and is the reason President Obama wont even make it as his starting dialogue point for debt reduction negotiations.
Republican leaders like Speaker Boehner have been poor in making the case for fiscal restraint. Some Republicans are now open for tax increases and the question is why? Other than our inability to live within our means what financial factor says that any type of taxes should be raised? Financial data shows revenues to be increasing. The Republicans have been duped into raising taxes and establishing new social programs (Bush's prescription drug program ) before only to pay later at the voting booth. Fuck it, even though defense cuts, which is only about 18 percent of total federal spending, but would contributes 50 percent of cutsl under the fiscal cliff scenario, I would say let the so called fiscal cliff take place. It would be better than any deal Speaker Boehner and Senate Minority Leader McCallum will agree to. Republicans agree to tax increase and the question becomes what exactly does the party stands for? And what is so bad goingto back to Bill Clinton federal tax rates? Why are Democrats afraid of? You see, the Bush tax cuts benefitted the "rich", it also substantially lowered the rate on low and middle earners, the majority who voted early this month for another 4 years of President Obama administration. The Republican leadership are setting themselves for situation where gimmicks will be in place for debt reduction, USA will still borrow 25-30 percent to operate its bloated government, and along the way President Obama will basically destroy their party. Instead of surrendering I recommend Republicans blitzing the air ways and make the case for fiscal retraint and how lower taxes spurs not only wealth creation, but more importantly, contributes greatly to government coffers (see Kennedy, Reagan and W Bush years). Our economy is moribund today. President Obama himself admitted a couple of years ago raising taxes on a bad economy is not a good move. Taxes needed to fund the Affordable Health Care program will kick in this coming year. Our debt is over $16+ trillions. The bill to service that debt is over $1/4 of a trillion dollar per year. Remember, once at some point those bond holders will want a bigger return. Increasing our debt ceiling, as Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner have recommended will expedite this train wreck. If President Obama and his fellow Democrats are not serious and unwilling to structurally tackle entitlements, which amount to about 50 percent of our yearly federal spending, then let secrestration take place. Temporary band-aid or kicking the can will only expedite our unsolvency. It is our duty to leave our kids a more prosperous place than we inherited from our predecessors. We should not leave a country that is envious of our neighbors' posessions. We should not leave them a place that doesn't reward aspiration to maximize our individual talents. We should be the best we can be without worrying going above some government placed financial threshold that collects more of our physical labor. Independency from government is not a radical idea. It is the idea that founded and made this country great. American apoyee greatness was reached when it landed a man on the moon and brought him safely back. The forces of "fainess" and "equality" have gained persuasion since within the voting block. Somehow the crumbling European model, which is crumbling, is gaining traction. We can't spend money we don't have. We have to do with what we have. Those are basic ideas of enjoying a successful life that many today for some reason do not and can not comprehend. President Obama and Democrat have not identified a single entitlement program with respective quantifiable reduction. Taxing the "rich" approach has been and will continue to be their sole proposal. Financial data shows revenues is not the problem, yet raising taxes is the approach to reduce debt and reign in our spending. I guess they are not teaching basic economics in high schools nowadays.

I have no issue understanding this country's greatness and why it has been successful. I also understand that as an evolving society we need to reflect that and not live in the 1700's.

The final line for me to cross in complete alienation from the right was my recognition that Obama is not a leftist. In fact, he’s barely a liberal—and only because the political spectrum has moved so far to the right that moderate Republicans from the past are now considered hardcore leftists by right-wing standards today. Viewed in historical context, I see Obama as actually being on the center-right.
