Really liking the Jay Ferrar/Ben Gibbard project I mentioned earlier in the thread. Too lazy to scroll back and see ifg I posted this, but here's a really good concert they did a while back.

This video clip was shot by someone in the audience at our 2nd Annual Na Mele o na Keiki (Music for the Children) Toys for Tots Holiday Concert last Wednesday evening here in Honolulu. The young man in the black shirt is Jake Shimabukuro, and he's playing a custom-built Kamaka ukulele (yes, an ukulele!) along with our U.S. Marine Corps Forces Pacific Band. Jake's an acknowledged virtuoso on the ukulele (the name literally means dancing flea, because of the way the fingers dance across the string when played properly). They were performing a modern arrangement of "Carol of the Bells." I wish you could see the whole band and the whole song in this (and you will, eventually, when our video production folks finish the editing of our five-camera shoot of the concert, with the audio taken directly off the mixing board). Hope you enjoy this!

Pelican. They're kinda like a stoner rock/metal instrumental group that play long, drawn-out songs. I picked them up on Sirius a few years ago and their stuff is pretty good. March to the Sea is my favorite. It's damn long too!

Pelican Is awesome. Their EP and First 2 albums are sick. Especially the song Drought.

If you like Pelican, check out Red sparowes, Torche, Big business, Tomahawk..

Whoa, the Low Anthem.

http://www.myspace.com/lowanthem

I had heard bits of their stuff on the radio, but never sat down to listen through their catalog before. Pretty wild mix here, from distortion-laden shouting, to mellower folksy stuff, to something that sounds like a choral arrangement you'd hear in church on Sunday. I'm definitely intrigued.

Speaking of ambient noise rock

Zechs Marquise has been getting some more airplay from me as of late. Pretty interesting stuff, not to mention a 'not sure if its disturbing or not album' cover.

I dunno, the structure and everything was relatively bland on that song. There was nothing besides the vocals that popped out at me- it was better than I expected, but it didn't sound like a "complete" System of a Down song.

Being he played the majority of the instruments on this album, I'll go as far to say he is SOAD. He produced it as well. Not too mention, his lyrics are well thought out and articulate. More intelligent and thought provoking than any Nickelback track.

I've taken shits that are more intelligent and thought-provoking than any Nickelback track.

I'm taking nothing away from the vocal part, but the instrumentation in that track is completely vanilla, especially compared to earlier System. There's zero experimentation. Listen to "Sugar" and then listen to that, and it doesn't sound like it's the same guitarist. Notice the tempo changes, notice that there is more going on with the guitar than accentuating the vocals, notice that the drums literally follow the same pattern throughout the song. At no point in the song do the instruments take center stage, which they have generally done in SOAD songs. And if you listen to the drums on "Spiders," and then this, you'll understand what I'm saying. There's a distinct difference.

I see your point - there is a difference - and Nickelback was an exaggerated example. According to a few articles, this album was all Serj - not much involvement from any other musicians. So, no, it's not the same drummer or guitar player.

I Like: the salary cap

I Don't Like: over paying for players

Started listening to Starsailor again. I remember when their first single "Good Souls" came out when I was in high school, I bought their first CD "Love is Here," and listened to it a whole lot. Then I over played it, like I sometimes tend to do with things I really like, and got a little sick of them. I didn't keep up with their follow up albums and, fast forward to the present, I pretty much forgot that the band even existed.

This week, I randomly decided to sift through my old CD booklet (which I've neglected ever since mp3s, ipods and vinyl took over my musical-life). I came across their first CD and decided to give it a listen, to see if I still enjoyed it after all that time removed. Well, I did enjoy it, but what really re-sold me on the band was Youtube. The lead singer's name is "James Walsh" and if you Youtube search "James Walsh Acoustic" or something along those lines, you'll find a bunch of live acoustic versions of their songs. And to me, this is the format which really shows how great the band, particularly singer/songwriter James Walsh is. If you enjoy acoustic music, this guy James Walsh writes some amazing songs. And his voice is just out of control good. Their studio recordings and "full band" stuff is good also, but for me, just him singing and playing acoustic guitar is where it's at.

suggested youtube videos
1. Cover of U2's "all i want is you"
2. acoustic "all the plans we made"
3. acoustic "tell me it's not over"
4. acoustic cover of Dion's "born to be with you" into Elton John's "rocket man"
5. acoustic "coming down"

I see your point - there is a difference - and Nickelback was an exaggerated example. According to a few articles, this album was all Serj - not much involvement from any other musicians. So, no, it's not the same drummer or guitar player.

Yeah. Like I said, I like the song, I just think there's a tangible difference.

Let the cheesiness of a 1980's FRENCH-CANADIAN video take control. Beware black-and-white ambulances driven by TIE fighter pilots! They will take you to the science hospital!

At :05, I think that we get to see the inspiration for Dermott from Venture Bros.

OK...I finally listened to the Dirty Projectors album. Finally the hipsters are listening to Squeeze! Wasn't crazy about it, but I didn't hate it, either--it didn't live up to the hype, but nothing ever does. I shouldn't let that cloud my judgment. It definitely sounds like it will be an epochal album, but the whole time I shifted between "hm, that sounds interesting" and "god, that's obnoxious." I especially didn't like the female singers Beach Boys (Girls?)-ing it up all over every song.

Nah. Playing wasn't the problem, the needle just doesn't take itself off the record like it's supposed to at the end, which also means I can't stack up records and have them auto play through them.

I can still play em as long as i take the needle off at the end of the record
