I have 3 official Dell Chargers and 2 "compatible" chargers in the house.
None do the trick, but none are very new. Dell chargers do tend to fall apart. What the hell...I'll give this a shot too.

So lately my flash windows in Chrome turn into transparent holes that go right through to my desktop. Running the latest Chrome, OSX 10.6. Works fine in Firefox, just not Chrome. Any clues?

Having trouble and looking for the best way to setup my home network with what I have and the restrictions of my house.

Here are the network devices I have: Linksys Wireless-G Router (WRT54G3G-VN), a NetGear switch (FS105), and a Linksys Wireless Access Point (WAP200).

Items that connect to the network:

Hardwired - Two PCs in the basement (call them PC-A, which is mine, and PC-B), PS3 (I know, it could very easily be connected via wireless, but I prefer it to be hardwired for some reason), and a connection for my house's security system.

Wireless - We have a few laptops, most of which are used in the "den". The Nintendo Wii is located up in the attic.

Here's the deal: Router is located in the basement, and it's wireless signal gets very weak in the den. So, my father bought the WAP200 to improve the signal. Because of placement issues (my mother wears the pants), my father placed the WAP200 in a spot in the basement directly under the den.

I never knew how to setup the WAP200 correctly, and it is showing. For a while, we had it working, but now we cannot connect to it or access the GUI. I cannot connect to 192.168.1.245. I can see that it has a strong signal, but cant connect.

The switch was purchased when we ran out of ports on the router for all of the hardwired devices.


Update: I was able to access the GUI. Please advise on which mode would be best: Access Point, Repeater, or Bridge.
When the WAP200 was being installed, I spoke with someone who told me that the I could either use it as an extension of my original Wireless Network or as it's own wireless network. I am going to assume I went with the second option, because when I view what networks are available, both show up. Name of the original network is Mandlebaum (seinfeld reference), and the network associated with the WAP200 is called linksys-G.

I really am in over my head with this. Too much stuff I don't know.

Please don't assume I have everything connected properly (in terms of the router, switch, and access point). More specifically, what's the best way to have this stuff connected? Which device should be the one that the modem is connected to, and where should I go from there?

OK well you definitely have a whole lot going on there and maybe its best to answer when im sober but i'll give it a go anyway. For starters it really depends on what you are trying to accomplish. do you need everything to be on the same network and talk to eachother or is it only important for things to have internet access?

For basics, the modem should connect to the router. One of the LAN ports on the router should connect to the switch and any other wired devices. Ideally the AP should be set as a repeater if the software allows it(DD-WRT secondary firmware would allow it but I dont know for sure about the stock firmware). If all you need is internet then run a wire to the AP and just set it as its own thing. Gimme more details on what exactly you want to accomplish and maybe i can give a better answer. If you live within 30 mins of Putnam County NY I'd come help onsite for a decent 6 pack.

My recommendation would be to go to the forum for majorgeeks.com, and under the malware/virus forum follow the "Read and Run Me" sticky. They don't want you to post before following all the steps there. I would wait for Rick or another person's advice, because I really don't know much, but that site is helpful.

Haha I appreciate the on-site offer, but I would never make ya do that. However, if we ever do rendesvous, I owe you more than a 6-pack. I was pretty far from sober myself when I read your post, which I got a bit of a kick out of.

Anyway, as far as what I am trying to accomplish, I am pretty much just seeking internet access. I can't remember if I mentioned this in my previous post, but the AP was up and running a few months back and I have it back now. Right now, I have the AP sending out a different wireless network. Is it better to have the AP act as a repeater? Are there any reasons not to do that? Also, what is the right terminology for how it is set up now? (Just to make sure I haven't been too vague: Router is sending out a Wireless Network called Mandlebaum, and the AP is sending out one called Linksys-G. On a laptop I can choose one or the other.)

You mentioned something about having the PCs talk to each other. I am going to assume this means for easy file sharing. This is not a necessity at all. Our only concern is that each PC (including laptops) can utilize the network printer, a wifi Lexmark 6570. I do not know if that would be affected by the different ways to set up the AP.

My other concern is getting a strong signal to the attic, where the Wii is, mostly for Netflix streaming. Right now, the signal is too weak and it affects the quality and speed. I am unable to get a wired device up there, say another access point to boost the signal. Is there anything I can purchase (i.e. a wireless repeater?) or do to my router (better antennae?) to improve the signal up there. When reading an article very quickly, it mentioned that proper antennae can increase the signal by 600%, which I find to be a bit ridiculous. I don't think I will be able to get a wire up there if I were to purchase another AP.

Download all of the following files RKill, Malwarebytes, TDSSKiller, SuperAntiSpyware Portable. Save all to your desktop where you can find them easily.

Double click rkill.com and it should kill running programs that are blocking Malwarebytes from running. If it completes a notepad file should come up saying what processes it killed. Some may be legit programs but we don't need to be concerned with that right now, this isn't deleting anything, just closing programs basically. If nothing happens after a few seconds, or it comes up and disappears, try running it again a few more times to see if that notepad file comes up.

Then install malwarebytes and update it. Do a full scan (this can take somewhere between a 1/2 and an eternity(I've seriously seen it run for 8 hrs)). Let it remove everything it finds and it will prompt you to reboot.

Unzip TDSSKiller and then run the exe file. Scan takes about 30 seconds. If it finds something it will remove it and prompt a reboot. If it does not find anything then good.

Finally run SuperAntiSyware and update it then do a full scan. Fix any issues it finds and reboot.

That should take care of most infections. More serious ones we will need to run ComboFix but DO NOT run that unless I tell you to. Hopefully we don't need it, as it can be overly aggressive sometimes.

Sounds like you are close. When you set it up as a repeater, set the SSID and WEP code (or whichever encryption you use) as the same as the main router. Then see if everything works. Depending on the hardware and software, some devices don't work well together as a repeater.

Depends on what happens when you try to open things. Does it ask you what program you want to open it with or does it just not do anything? For the later, rkill solves it 70% of the time. For the first issue there is a registry fix that should cure it. Either way, safe mode is never a bad idea. Just choose safe mode with networking so you can update the programs after installing.

If all else fails, thats why we got the portable version of SuperAntiSpyware, it usually runs when other programs can't. Malware tends to block .exe files and also blocks known antimalware programs by name. The SAS Portable is a randomly generated file name. It will be SAS[random number] and have a .com extension.

This isn't a "Rick" question but more of a question for tech savvy geeks. I have two TVs in my house: an LG LCD and a smaller Samsung LCD. I have a Samsung blu-ray player hooked up to the smaller Samsung TV, video signal via an HDMI cable. Works fine. Today I was trying to hook up the blu-ray player to the LG TV, only it doesn't work: either I get no signal or a cracking and therefore unwatchable signal. Here's what it's not:

It's not the cord. I tried a new HDMI cord and get a worse result. I've also test both cords on another device hooked into the TV (my cable box) -- both work fine.

It's not the HDMI ports on the TV. Again, using the working cable box, I tested each port. Each port gives a clear signal to the TV, with both wires tested.

It can't be the blu-ray player either. The blu-ray player works perfectly fine on the smaller TV.

The only thing I can think is that some device also hooked up to the LG TV (cable box, Xbox, receiver, subwoofer) is causing feedback to the blu-ray player. Is this even possible? I'd rather not start stripping components off the TV today, and it's really not that big a deal (I just want to watch Harry Potter on a bigger TV). I'm more bothered that I can't figure out what the problem is.

Sounds like a handshake issue. The TV and the bluray are not communicating properly. Look to see if any firmware updates are available for the Bluray

Can be done fairly easy, but not cheap.

What kind of storage capacity are we talking about?

I know you can access files from anywhere, not 100% sure about writing to them. But judging by the product description I would say yes.

I found it on slickdeals (thanks to whoever posted that website on here a few years back. great site). Under the comments on SD, a lot of people are trashing the processor (and HP, for that matter). All I pretty much use the computer for is watching videos, managing mp3s, and a lot of Word Doc stuff for work. I will often stream moves to my PS3 and I want to make sure it can handle the transcoding of certain files. I am not a gamer on my PC, so I don't really need something on the high end. I just want to make sure it's not a piece of shit.

Any input is greatly appreciated.

At 350$, even if turns out to be a piece of shit, it's not the worst purchase you could have made. That said, for what you're going to be using it for, you should have no worries. I'm not a fan of AMD chips as I feel they're underpowered compared to Intel chips but at that price, I can't fault the purchase. I'd have gone with more memory though as I believe in maxing out memory and damn the cost.

Linksys sells a wireless bridge device which is better than going with a range-extender/repeater in my opinion. I was able to convert an old wireless router into a bridge but you need a specific model router to do that. Granted this could have changed if newer release of router firmware can now work on the newer linksys routers. Basically its a full power wireless router that acts as a pass through for the wired devices connected to it. I never have issues with streaming on my XBox or my PC but the wireless router and the wireless bridge are only two rooms away from each other. Not sure how effective it would be at a further distance or with more walls and pipes in between them.

Not a piece of shit. As far as streaming the videos, even an Atom processor can handle that so no worries with a Phenom. And for that price you can't go wrong.

x86 is where the 32 bit native programs get installed by defaut, and the regular Program files is where the 64 bit ones will install to by default.

I fucked up BIG TIME!!! In attempting to clean out programs from my computer, I uninstalled my Soundmax driver, so I have no audio output. I have a Lenovo ThinkPad T61, but when I gi to the Lenovo website, they have no option to download another one, nor do they have any contact for technical issues. I just keep winding up back on the Download & Drivers page. The "virtual agent" doesn't understand, and the Lenovo Community's threads are all full of technical jargon that I can't comprehend!

In trying to remedy that, I seemed to have uninstalled my MATSHITA DVD-RAM UJ - 862 (?).

I have no idea where (or if I still have) the software disk is, and when I attempt to search for the hardware from the device manager, I get a "code 39".

ON TOP OF THAT...I also uninstalled Bonjour, so now I can't play anything on iTunes. I got a message that said the only way to fix this is to uninstall and then reinstall iTunes. I don't even want to think of the trouble that will cause.

I wish I could just toss this and buy a new one, but that's not happening any time soon!

PCIE is backwards compatible so it should work.

Run the itunes installer and see if it lets you do a repair installation. You shouldn't lose anything and it should fix the issue though I can't say anything with certainty as I don't use itunes.

OK before we go crazy here just try a system restore. Start menu -> programs -> accessories -> system tools -> system restore (May not be exact location so look around. Going from memory here as I don't have an XP machine to check). Restore the machine to a week or two ago and see what happens.

No dice. I went back to 8/19, and then yesterday when I was told it couldn't restore from the 19th. Same result for yesterday. And each time the hardware wizzard was the 1st thing that appeared.

I would just go to lenovo's site and download all the related drivers and install them to see which ones will work. A small possibility is this is caused by spyware, but it is unlikely. Just to be sure you can run a scan with malwarebytes.
