Easily looking forward to the two 4-5 match ups the most. Those both should be great. This is the year Nashville breaks out, I think at least conference finals for them.

I think the Blues get knocked out. Everyone talks about how the Rangers don't have the offense to advance, the Blues are the 21st ranked offense in the league. Yeah their defense is preposterous, but I don't see them taking out the Sharks.

Caps give Bruins all they can handle, but in the end fall just short.

I was tempted to pick a sweep for the Devils, but I think Brodeur shits the bed in one game.

Quick may steal a game or two, and the Kings have some talent, but they aren't going to be a real threat to Vancouver.

I agree with almost all of that except for the Blues. Yep, they have a horrible offense but San Jose has been so streaky this season while the Blues have been getting better and better. But then you have the playoff tested team in San Jose vs. the playoff noobs in St. Louis, and that usually matters.

The thing I question is when down 2-1 late in the third period, who on the Blues scores? Who do they turn to? I just don't think they have the guns. I mean I guess it will be Backes, but he is more Callahan than Gaborik. The Blues are the Rangers on steroids. Their goal scoring comes from scraping more than anything.

Then again, while the Sharks do have the guns, that is also one of their biggest problems, nobody steps up.

What could be the Blues' saving grace is they have an elite defenseman (Pietrangelo) and a very, good PMD (Shattenkirk). If those guys are putting up points, the Blues have a much better shot.

Rangers vs Sens (4-2 series) / (rooting for NYR)
--Good pointer by Greatone in the game thread about Ottawa's recent record. Andy has not been the same and Bishop is a big guy that can be beaten. Nonetheless, the Sens can get hot and have an excellent offensive arsenal. I think they will win two games, but the Rangers will wear them down in six.

Bruins vs Caps (4-2 series) / (rooting for Bruins)
--The Bruins are ready to unload their demonic physical game on the Caps. They have speed, size, and skill, all which will be too much for the Caps D to handle. Chara on Ovechkin 24/7 if he could. Still, the Bruins can be their own worst enemies and the Caps can manage two wins in this series.

Panthers vs Devils (4-3 series) / (rooting for Panthers)
--These two teams have played with an equal display on the ice. DeBoer will want to do all he can to beat his former team, but that could also cause him to overuse Ilya and be too aggressive. The wild card is Brodeur. All he needs to do is play good goaltending. If he plays average at best, then the Devils will have issues. The Panthers are high on energy, will get some much needed rest, and Dineen can roll different combos on the ice that work. Panthers may win the home games, but lose the away games. I think that will be the factor..........so i hope.

Penguins vs Flyers (4-1 series) / (rooting for Flyers)
--I hope this will be the bloodbath that we hope to see. I want to see blood. I want to see cheap shots. Goals. Frustrations. Fights. Obviously i am not pleased in cheering for the Flyers, but the arrogance of the Penguins is too much to handle that losing in the first round will be so disappointing for this team. Obviously, that will not happen. The Flyers do not have the star goaltending, they have some tough injuries to face, and they have confidence issues.... big time. It would not surprise me to see a sweep here.

Canucks vs Kings (3-4 series) / (rooting Kings)
--Kings, meet the Nucks, Nucks meet the Bruings! I think the Kings know how Boston beat the Canucks in the playoffs and the Kings are similar in that style of play. They are huge, physically iron-men, have skill, some speed, and have a top notch goaltender. The Canucks may find themselves aggravated with the Kings playing nastily. I think this will be a game 7 and the Kings will hit the same buttons that Boston hit last year.

Blues vs Sharks (4-0 series) / (rooting Blues)
--I like the Sharks, but i like the Blues better this year with my admiration of Pietrangelo, Shattenkirk, Perron, Oshie, and the young team as a whole. An awesome defense, a determined group of solid players and any one of the four lines can score timely goals. Goaltending is superb, and their coach is brilliant. The Sharks have the offensive weapons, but so-so defense and their confidence is not strong. Sharks will get swept.

Coyotes vs Blackhawks (3-7 series) / (rooting Hawks)
--I can't refuse to root for Patty Kane and Toews. And Sharp....and Seabrook........Keith....Hossa... it's just a heck of a team. The Coyotes are not well experienced enough. A lot of youth. They win on goaltending but it is Mike Smith and he is still beatable. I don't think the Yotes have enough depth either. What kills the Hawks? Goaltending. Phoenix will win some games because of Smith vs Crawford. But, i don't think they have enough to beat Chicago in other areas.

Predators vs Red Wings (4-3 series) / (rooting Preds)
--Nashville deserves a long playoff run this year. They are just such a balanced team all across the board. Red Wings are getting old and i don't think they can handle the Preds in this series.

Is there also going to be a thread where we predict everything right off the bat? I like going through various matchup fantasies in my head. Also, I liked what happened last year where we also predicted who the leading scorer would be in the series.

Rangers: Richards
Sens: Karlsson

Boston: Lucic
Caps: Ovi

Panthers: Campbell
Devils: Elias

Penguins: Crosby
Flyers: Giroux

Vancouver: H Sedin
Kings: Kopitar

Blues: Backes
Sharks: Couture

Phoenix: Whitney
Hawks: Hossa

Wings: Datsyuk
Preds: Radulov

Pro-Flyer sentiment is the true blasphemy.

I don't understand how, even with the rivalry and long-standing reputation as shitheads that the Flyers has, you would prefer a team that is undeniably shown favoritism by the League and employs several players who are dirty as sin. The League may not try to fix games for Pittsburgh, but you can't deny that there is a double standard with regards to that team, not after recent events.

Also sad to say, but there are many more "hateable" players on the Penguins right now than the Flyers. Briere is a smug cocksucker, Hartnell is a douchebag and Talbot is a humongous pussy, and of course there's Pronger but who knows if he will ever play another game. The Penguins have Cooke, Orpik, Dupuis, Asham, Malkin, Fleury, and Crysby who are all very detestable and most of whom are very dirty players.

Pick, Rangers in 6.

I can't even justify this beyond being a Rangers fan the way they've been playing. However Ottawa has been even worse and Craig Anderson might decide to cook for himself again so we see the backup goalie.

Rooting, I am not Melvin.

Pick, Bruins in 5.

Huge Boston advantage in net and they will probably beat the shit out of the Caps, especially with the playoff non-officiating.

Rooting, Fuck Boston.

Pick, Devils in 4.

No loser points in April guys. Also you do realize they have Jose Theodore in goal right? No more favorable geography to boot and I don't see them failing any further upward.

Rooting, Kittehs obviously but OT losses are just losses this time of year.

Pick, Pens in 6.

Should be brutal but Marc Andre-Fleury has been known to actually stop pucks unlike anyone in pads and a Flyers jersey since 1989.

Rooting, Philly since for some reason AIDS wasn't an option.

Pick, Canucks in 5.

If the Kings could score in a whorehouse with Ovechkin's contract in their zipper I'd have some faith in them but they can't.

Rooting, Kings.

Pick, Blues in 5.

I don't see the Sharks not shooting themselves in the foot like they always do at some point come April. Less pressure since they're a 7 seed but they're pretty unreliable.

Rooting, Blues.

Pick, Coyotes in 6

Hard to pick Chicago with confidence because they are Jekyll and Hyde. Also not in love with that goaltending.

Rooting, Hawks.

Pick, Predators in 7.

Last run with this defense intact and hard not to love Rinne in net over Howard. Also Detroit is fucking bad on the road and Nashville has home ice.

Rooting, Preds.

Flyers fans more than make up for anything you can say about the Pens or their fans to me. Just intolerable people. I never want to see them happy, under any circumstance. The Penguins have pretty much never been relevant to me, positive or negative. They're the sad stragglers of the Atlantic, far away. At least Crosby and Malkin are exciting skill players. I just want all the Flyers to be run through a thresher.

Pick, Rangers in 6.

I do not think we match up well against Ottawa, but we'll get the job done in the end.

Rooting, duh.

Pick, Bruins in 6.

Boston has the advantage in every area, but Thomas has been Jekyll and Hyde this season. How long the series is depends on which version of Thomas they get.

Rooting, I hate both teams but Boston will be a much tougher opponent down the line so I am rooting for Washington.

Pick, Devils in 5.

The Panthers don't even deserve to be in the playoffs. I would say this would be a sweep, but Fatso is old so I expect him to slip on a banana peel in one game.

Rooting, obviously the Panthers but this is easily the most lopsided matchup in the Conference, maybe the whole League.

Pick, Pens in 6.

It will be a long, hard series but Pittsburgh will prevail because of MAF. Philly matches Pittsburgh's firepower well, and they are one of the best at getting away with the "clutch and grab," so that will give them a little bit of an edge. Unfortunately, in the end MAF is far more consistent than Mr. Universe.

Rooting, lots of injuries on both sides.

Pick, Canucks in 4.

Swift is a good goalie, but the Canucks are a far more complete team. I think this will be a sweep.

Rooting, Kings because the Canucks have a very irritating fanbase. Also, if someone can knock off the Canucks then the Rangers get home ice in the Finals.

Pick, Blues in 5.

The Sharks have struggled all year and I don't see it stopping now. The Blues have been a very solid team this year so they will dispatch the Sharks without much trouble.

Rooting, Blues because I like JD and wish him well.

Pick, Chicago in 5.

C'mon, it's the Coyotes. They are the Panthers of the West. And Chicago still has a number of very talented players, even though their goaltending situation is a bit shaky.

Rooting, meh don't really care. Chicago, I guess because they're Original Six.

Pick, Predators in 7.

Decisive goaltending advantage for Nashville, Detroit sucks on the road. Detroit is very good at home, however, so it will be a long series.

Rooting, Preds.

Also, is it wrong that I'm almost more excited for the Flyers/Pens series than the Rangers/Sens. Maybe because we clinched the top spot early and are now facing a canadian team that I don't think we've ever faced in the playoffs before, but I can't seem to get too excited about this series.

steamroller mentioned this in one of the Ranger GDTs, but all of the lower seeds in the East won their season series against the top seeds, except the Devils and Panthers, and that was 4 pts to 5 pts. Ottawa-Rangers and Caps-Bruins were 6-3, Flyers-Pens was 8-5. Could be some long series in the first round.

And yes, for the time being, definitely pulling for the Flyers, for strategic reasons as well as emotional ones.

I don't know, the Sens have one strong, fast line and Karlsson. Their second line is fairly meh. They have a weak backend, and shaky goaltending. The Rangers tend to cause havoc in the oppositions end when their defense isn't great. If they generate enough shots and get in Andersons face, and the D doesn't get caught pinching against Spezzas line, the longest it should go is 6 games.

Rangers in 6
Bruins in 6
Devils in 5
Pens in 7

Kings in 7
Sharks in 6
Hawks in 5
Preds in 7

This is going to be an exciting 1st round. I'm especially excited to watch the Flyers/Pens decimate each other and the Preds/Wings series.

Pick: Canucks 6
Rooting: Kings - LA gets its collective hockey heart broken again in round 1

Pick: Blues 5
Rooting: Blues - Perron and Oshie are rolling, the D is good both ways, and (unlike another team who wears blue) both goalies can play. I expect SJ to fold early.

Pick: Coyotes 6
Rooting: Coyotes - might be wishful thinking, but unless Toews comes back and comes back at close to 100% I think the Yotes can grind out a series win.

Pick: Predators 6
Rooting: Predators a few PPs a game is all the Preds are going to need to win games.

If you're referring to the one I used to run, I can't really afford the prize (two tickets for a regular season game next year) anymore - in addition to the increase, my seatmate isn't renewing, so I'm downgrading to one seat.

Yeah, even I wouldn't go that far. I think of it kind of how I thought of the 2008 election-- I voted for McCain not because I particularly wanted him in Office, but because I didn't want Obama in Office. Wasting my vote on one of the spoilers who didn't have a chance wouldn't have accomplished anything, so I did what I could. Likewise, in this situation it's more that I am rooting against Pittsburgh than that I am truly rooting for Philly.

And anyway, as a Rangers fan hoping for a Cup run you should be rooting against Pittsburgh as much as you can because if they get knocked out early, it would be a great help to the Rangers. I like our chances against Philly a whole hell of a lot more than Pittsburgh.

I like that all the hockey writers, especially Lambert and the rest of the guys at Puck Daddy, are completely shitting on the Panthers. I feel like seemingly dramatic mismatches never work out the way they're supposed to, given that no matter how bad the team is, they're still elite athletes that eventually have to get sick of hearing how bad they are. Would be nice to see Marty and Kovalchuk get humiliated.

For the rooting question regarding Flyers-Pens, I write in, "Injuries, nuclear armageddon, arena collapse, and/or plague."

As for the Ranger-Sens series...I'm predicting Rangers in 6-7, simply because they'll figure out a way to fuck up a few times before getting their act together. For some reason, memories of the '97 Ranger-Habs series (the "Damn-phousse!!!!!" series) are swirling in my head.

First round (East): all the favorites, except the Devils over the Panthers. The Capitals are going to get swept and Dale Hunter will be fired. Pittsburgh vs. Philly will be less interesting than people think.

(West): I'm picking all upsets except Nashville. I think the Kings are a solid team that could capitalize on questionable Vancouver goaltending. I'm not sold on Bryan Little and think the Sharks talent could expose him. Phoenix is Phoenix. And like the Rangers, I like that Nashville is going to make it nearly impossible for the Red Wings to sustain pressure.

How will Winnipeg Jets center Bryan Little affect the Blues-Sharks series, Leeds?

Has Elliott been named the playoff starter? This is the problem with platoons, especially when both goalies have been playing extremely well. I'm not sure switching goalies every couple of games is the right way to go in the playoffs.
