So, wait, a ball that hits the ground and then bounces up and hits the batter is considered a HBP. I've never seen that before.

Huh. Learn something new every day.

QUOTE
A pitched ball that hits the batter after bouncing is not a dead ball. Some people believe that once a pitched ball has hit the dirt and then hits the batter, it is a dead ball and should be called a ball. This is incorrect and the batter should be awarded first base.

You really didn't know that? Shit, I've seen Vlad Guerrero actually hit balls that had bounced in the dirt for base hits.

I've never seen it before, and I've watched a lot of baseball.
I know that if you don't get out of the way you won't get first base, but not the part about a bounced ball.

See, I don't think it's a dead ball. I just thought to be hit by a pitch it has to hit you while it's being pitched. Not after it bounces on the ground. Hence why the ruling of it being a wild pitch seemed correct to me.

They're not the Flyers, so I don't give a fuck. I've just never thought of the Braves as rivals to the Phillies, I'm a Ravens fan, and I don't really care much about basketball. So.

Agitating Yankees/Mets fans > agitating Phillies fans.

Plus I kinda like seeing my co-workers enjoy it.

(This is all around when I'm 9 or 10) I really disliked the Mets and Yankees fans I knew. I didn't really have a team and both sides' fans nagged me about how awesome their team was, and mostly I wished they all would die. I didn't want to be a fan of their teams. They all seemed really slobbery. The Braves were kind of fun to follow being "West" at the time, and they had a guy named Ryan Klesko. I just REALLY liked that name. Easily my favorite Brave as a kid.

I've picked a decent number of teams to be a fan of over names. I actually was an Islanders fan til I was 5, when they traded Hrudey, who was my favorite player with his awesome name. The Rangers had dynamo names like Sandstrom and Granato so they were pretty easy for me to like, and I just never looked back. Seriously, the trading of Hrudey when I was little is the reason you're talking to a Rangers fan today.

Baseball's playoffs could be expanding in two years.

The new head of the players' union says his members are open to adding more wild-card teams for 2012 and possibly extending the division series to a best-of-seven.

I don't know if this article goes into this or not, but one of the caveats of the extended series and playoff teams is supposed to be a shorter season so it doesn't go into november.

Frankly I'm all for shortening the season, seeing more playoff baseball and avoiding the "dog days"

laugh2.gif I just think that it dilutes the playoffs when you add another wild card. There would be no fun divisional races ever again. And this is coming from the girl whose team missed the playoffs completely.

Baseball isn't a sport where the dominate team wins every single time. Is all of this stemming from a Giants-Rangers World Series? Why? I hate Bud Selig.

Do you know how much revenue comes from the regular season. There is no way the owners go for that. They will scorch the Earth with Bud Selig's toupee before that happens.

laugh2.gif I just think that it dilutes the playoffs when you add another wild card. There would be no fun divisional races ever again. And this is coming from the girl whose team missed the playoffs completely.

Baseball isn't a sport where the dominate team wins every single time. Is all of this stemming from a Giants-Rangers World Series? Why? I hate Bud Selig.

Are you kidding? The more rounds of playoffs, the less likely the Yankees are to win the series. The playoffs are a randomizer.

So you add a full series? Then what? The division winners waits a week and a half to play again? It just seems like we could have 80 game winners making the playoffs.

Fenway Park, in Boston, is a lyric little bandbox of a ballpark. Everything is painted green and seems in curiously sharp focus, like the inside of an old-fashioned peeping-type Easter egg. It was built in 1912 and rebuilt in 1934, and offers, as do most Boston artifacts, a compromise between Man's Euclidean determinations and Nature's beguiling irregularities. - John Updike

The irony is that I imagine that the gripes come from teams that are sick of big-money dominance in baseball, when in fact this rule would just ensure that the Yankees and R-- S-- compete every single year.

Do you know how much revenue comes from the regular season. There is no way the owners go for that. They will scorch the Earth with Bud Selig's toupee before that happens.

It's my understanding it's the owners that want it and the players are willing to go along with it. Selig is pushing this, who represents the owners.

Damn it. You are ruining my argument here.

I'm assuming the #1 seed would have a bye while #2-#5 and #3-#4.

No, this has been in discussion for a long time. Selig was on ESPN radio before the playoffs discussing this, and he presents it petty well.

He also brings up a fair point that baseball has the lowest percentage of teams that make the playoffs, and even with adding teams they'd still be at the bottom of that, I think tying only football.

The season is 2 damn long, if adding a series finally shortens it, I'm all for it. It doesn't effect how the game is played, just how much, to answer Kusand trying to point out a hypocrisy btw.

Meh. I file it under "messing with tradition."

Guys, a bye week doesn't add a series. They want to add a series. They want to go from 8 teams to 12. not 10.

That's funny, I was under the impression the Yankees and Sox already *do* compete every year.

I thought they just wanted to add 1 wild card team in each league, not two.

I would think baseball fans would be more open to making the divisional series 7 games. Does anyone really think a best-of-5 between a wild-card and a division champ is representative of the outcome over the long-haul? Or are you guys not objecting to lengthening that?

That's what I thought too untill I realized that technically doesn't add a series. When they say add a series, I don't think they mean have another team playing, I think they mean they want it to play out like the NHL.

3 series before the Championship instead of 2.

You can't add just 1 team to the mix. The first place team would have to have a bye for two series not one. If 1 has a bye and 2 plays 5 and 3 plays 4, who plays the next round? You have 3 teams left.
