The Rangers issued a statement. I presume it was written in blood. Whose, I don't know.

Statement on the suspension of Hagelin
Sunday, 04.15.2012 / 9:33 PM / News
New York Rangers
The New York Rangers accept the NHL's three-game suspension of Carl Hagelin and will not pursue an appeal.

However, we are thoroughly perplexed in the ruling's inconsistency with other supplementary discipline decisions that have been made throughout this season and during the playoffs.

We will have no further comment on this decision.

This suspension makes perfect sense when you consider the completely twisted logic of the senior management that this league operates under. Namely, that fighting and the associated goonery are part of the game, but they still allegedly care about player safety.

As others have said, and the Rangers themselves imply with that statement, the suspension to Hagelin is harsh, but understandable in that they are really trying to get those head shots out of the game. I also agree with considering the extent of the injury in whatever rubric they are using to determine suspensions. It's just impossible to reconcile that with only giving Carkner one game.

When Milbury says he should've gotten more than 1 game then it must be bad.

I'm dumbstruck by this. I really am.

I should be steaming mad, but I'm not. I'm just... numb.

I will say that if Alfredson plays tomorrow, the entire team needs to make damn sure that he regrets it. Hit him at every opportunity, and hit him hard. Plaster his ass into the fucking boards. Make him wish he were actually injured.

Matt Laughlin and Sherry Ross just killed the NHL for Carkner only getting one game on the Devils postgame show. Pretty much what we've been saying here, that the league came out of the offseason saying that they would drop the hammer, and blew a big chance to set a tone with the Weber incident.

What's becoming clear is how much of an emphasis they place on injuries that result from these actions. That's fine, again, but I will never understand how they can reconcile that with allowing fighting and roughing-type incidents to go by with a slap on the wrist. They're not appropriately weighing that while generally speaking, players might not get hurt at the time of a fight, but the long term effects are punishing.

Then again, 98% of these dimwits approve of fighting, so maybe they deserve what they get.

If Weber had been suspended, I have no issue with the Hagelin suspension.

The Carkner suspension is a fucking joke.

Cut this dumb fucking shit out, all of you. Alfredsson is an elder statesman of the game, a borderline hall of famer. He's shown more than a little snark of his own in the past, but he did nothing to goad Hagelin or anyone into this. He was on the wrong side of a reckless and unintentional hit, that's it. It's not his fault that the league has its head up its ass.

Through it all, the players deserve blame in this too.

We can rightfully crap on in game referees, and the NHL officials in New York, but the players are also responsible for their on ice conduct. While they're complaining about injuries, concussions and what not, they are the ones helping turn the NHL into a mix between the WWE, the UFC and hockey sticks.

The NHLPA has absolutely no right to complain about player safety, and it's the players in the association themselves, doing this. They are seizing on an opportunity to bend the rules that the NHL seemingly has no interest in enforcing. Instead of taking it upon themselves to be responsible, they instead chose to keep pushing the envelope.

When will they stop? Until we see someone pull a Marty McSorley and try to hack at someone's head like they're a baseball on a stand? Is that when the players and league will start to enforce rules again?

So if he comes back tomorrow, you think he should get a free pass? For essentially selling the League a line of bullshit to get one of the Rangers' best players sidelined for what could be the remainder of the series?

I am not saying to go out there and hurt Alfredson, do note that. I am just saying to make him hurt. There's a difference. Finish every check against him on every shift-- leave him battered and bruised, but do so in a completely legal fashion.

Then as an elder statesman of the game, he should be acting like it and going out and publicly denouncing the reckless and dirty play exhibited by his team, the Rangers and all others in the league.

Like I just said above, the players are culpable in this. If we should hold him in a higher regard, then he should try to be part of the solution, then just standing idly by and watch the game of hockey devolve to a contest of goon one upsmanship.

And I agree with KOD. That was the kind of "hurt" I hoped to see with the Flyer/Pen series. Tough, hard, bone crunching CLEAN hits. Not the circus we all saw.

What line of bullshit did Alfredsson sell anyone? Do you two think that he faked the whole thing? He has a prior history of concussions, and he got elbowed in the head. If you guys are advocating that he get punished, then you can't criticize the Ottawa fans that were calling for Boyle's blood after he got his fists up on Karlsson in Game 1.

Did I (seriously speaking) advocate that Rupp go and land 8 punches on Alfredsson's head and body? NO! So please don't put words in my mouth...or fingertips in this case.

I'm merely agreeing with KOD's separation of how you hurt and wear down someone. I frankly felt a key to this series would be the Rangers using their size, and tenacity to grind and hit and bruise the Senators into submission. Being a young team, they seemed ripe for this strategy as they'd unravel and be unwilling to answer the bell.

Similarly, I was hoping the Pens and Flyers would do this to each other for 7 games.

Where in that am I, or KOD saying we hope the Rangers go and sucker punch Alfredsson repeatedly?

Yes, I'm kidding around with the fact that the precedent has been set that the Rangers can just re-call Avery and insert him into the lineup to do the same thing Carkner did. I mean after all, it should just be a game correct? And we may even get a top 6 forward of theirs booted for a 3rd man in. But I would be supremely disappointed if Torts put in a guy like Scott and actaully had him do this. I'm disillusioned enough with the NHL these past 2 days. To see my own team do it would sicken me.

Alfredsson is a stand-up guy/player. He's friends with Henrik Lundqvist. Wishing hurt on him in any way is ridiculous, foolish and will prove nothing. The Rangers will not target Daniel Alfredsson IF he plays tomorrow or in any other game after that.

By the way as much as I joke about this, read some of the ESPN forums about this topic. Several people saying this is setting a dangerous precedent.

1) Put in a goon who serves no purpose
2) Have him target a specific player and attack him.
3) Wait until someone on their team comes to get the goon off his teammate and have it result in a 3rd man in.

With the rulings today, the NHL has essentially said this type of strategy is not nearly as bad as an ill-timed and irresponsible hit by a player that's never been fined by the league.

----

Also an interesting take. These bogus judgements by Shanny and the league are clearly pissing off true hockey fans Despite the NHL's attempts to grab new viewers, what keeps the league going is the cult like base it has. If you start pissing off your real fans and they tune out, that's a death blow to this league.

I know I'm only one person, but I am one of those people who decided to avoid all hockey tonight because of not needing to just wig out at the horrible product on the ice right now.

He was making a broad statement about the sentiment from several posters. And again, in case you couldnt tell, nowhere in this post did he say these posters, including you, demanded someone reign punches down on Alfredsson.

Just got in, I'm way too drunk to make much sense of this thread right now. Quite fucking hammered. Did I read right that Hagelin got 3 and Carkner 1? Doesn't seem very fair. However, the Rangers had better use it to their advantage (anger, inspiration, etc.) starting tomorrow, because no one gives a fuck if you were "screwed" in the history books, someone is screwed every year, the just care if you won. Well this is supposed to be the new age of how we handle suspensions remember? At least that's what the NHL sold us on this year.

The precedent set here is a repeat offender can go and target someone deliberately, assault them and only get a 1 game suspension. As my one friend just mentioned, Tie Domi got EIGHT games for sucker punching Ulf in 1995. This guy got 1.

I should also add, how many 3rd man in's did we have in Pittsburgh today? About 20? I think 2 people got kicked out.

Listening now. Just started talking about Hagelin's suspension.

How can both Campbell and Shanahan make such inconsistent decisions.

I am starting to think they are not the ones making them.

Perhaps the NHL is like Iran.

Alfredsson is a stand-up guy/player. He's friends with Henrik Lundqvist. Wishing hurt on him in any way is ridiculous, foolish and will prove nothing. The Rangers will not target Daniel Alfredsson IF he plays tomorrow or in any other game after that.

I'm sure Hagelin had a poster of Alfredsson in his dorm room at Michigan.

I think he prefers this to the Escher:

Well that and it would seem Hagelin was punished because Daniel was supposedly injured, and he's not. I'm not saying I wish he was injured, and I'm not screaming for his blood tomorrow or anything else that others are. I'm simply saying if a guy is punished for an injury, there should be, ya know, an injury.

Time to go to war. Don't whine. Don't complain. WIN!!

Shrug. Inconsistency, in my book. Suspending Hagelin is totally valid, the problem is they're not consistent due to the injury nonsense. If they really meant it about head injuries - and at this point I would happily agree they don't mean it at all - then injury shouldn't be involved.

I understand your stance on this, but you have to understand the frustration when you hear the penalty was based off of an apparent non existent injury...

Spector made a great point about this on the radio just now - you can't always punish to the injury with head shots, because a lot of times you don't know the extent of the injury for a while. He used Marc Staal as an example (not suggesting that Eric's hit was suspendable, just that Marc seemed fine at the time). He also mentioned that Weber broke Zetterberg's helmet. So by some lucky fluke, Z didn't show visible signs of injury, but what if it comes out later? There is enough evidence to show that head injuries are cumulative over the course of a player's career, even if any single incident isn't debilitating.

"Statement on the suspension of Hagelin
Sunday, 04.15.2012 / 9:33 PM / News
New York Rangers
The New York Rangers accept the NHL's three-game suspension of Carl Hagelin and will not pursue an appeal.

However, we are thoroughly perplexed in the ruling's inconsistency with other supplementary discipline decisions that have been made throughout this season and during the playoffs.

We will have no further comment on this decision."

I'm guessing this was made before the ruling on Carkner's suspension. I suppose we would have already heard if the "no comment" statement had changed after the news about the length of his suspension.

Also, would this be a mandate sent to the players and coaches as well? I would love to hear some of team's reactions / opinions on the comparrison of the two rulings.

As an aside, the reason that I don't get involved in discussions and game threads anymore is because of some of the things that some of the people post. It seems like there are a bunch of five year olds on here.* The vibe just isn't the same as it once was. Don't get me wrong, I still love coming here, and enjoy most of the commentary from most of the members. I just choose not to participate for the most part.

I've never spoken up about it, nor did I plan to, but it's just getting so tiresome.

Sorry for the tirade. You may resume conversing on the topic at hand. wink.gif

*definitely not a general statement
