Wait...did the shawarma lunch thing really happen?? If so, we missed it. I thought the scene we thought at the start of the credits was it. If there's more, I absolutely need to go back. Yes - heroes eating gyros actually happened. Derp! Dammit, he should've just said gyros. I know what the hell that is. Hmm, I'd like a good gyro right now. -------------------- QUOTE When a man tells you that he got rich through hard work, ask him: 'Whose?' --Don Marquis (1878 - 1937) |

Going to see it in IMAX 3D at 12:30. CAN'T WAIT. Was it worth it seeing it in 3D? This post has been edited by LisaLisa: May 14 2012, 07:38 PM -------------------- QUOTE When a man tells you that he got rich through hard work, ask him: 'Whose?' --Don Marquis (1878 - 1937) |

3D makes it look better, but it's not worth an extra $3.

I finally saw it last night and agree with all of the love. Hollywood is going to spend a lot of time trying to find the secret ingredient that makes for a good super-hero movie and they will inevitably get it wrong so let me save them the trouble: It's the same thing that separates good comics from bad comics -- Good writing. Whatever Whedon asks for the sequel, they should pay it happily.
There was so much I loved about this movie but, seriously, I don't know what it is about The Hulk that taps into my reptile brain but, every time he started smashing stuff I was like a little boy. The glee was bubbling up to my face and I was grinning like an idiot. -------------------- |

By the way, super-geek moment -- The line that gets Thanos to turn and smile is "To challenge the humans is to court death."
In the comics, Thanos is in love with the physical manifestation of Death. He wants to kill everyone in the universe as a gift to her. So, the idea of "courting death" has great appeal for him. -------------------- |

My wife and I agreed that had Ed Norton remained in the role, it would have totally altered how Banner was played in this movie.

My wife and I agreed that had Ed Norton remained in the role, it would have totally altered how Banner was played in this movie. For the worse... Definitely. I don't think that I would have changed much about the casting. I also thought that Loki picked it up a few notches in this movie from his performance in Thor. I don't mean that as a slight to the first movie - I think that he was just that much better in Avengers. -------------------- |

Loki did some growing up in between films and I also think Ruffalo's portrayal as a much shakier Banner was much better.

Yesterday was an amazing day. Got to see Stan Lee do a panel at comic-con, then ended the night by seeing the Avengers. I absolutely loved it. Great action, lots of time for each character, really good balance, funny, action, etc etc etc. I loved how Agent Coulson was being such a fanboy around Captain America, and it sucked so much that he died.
I am LOVING Loki. I'm loving the look, the mannerisms, the acting, that evil smile, it's perfect. For someone that only got into Marvel and stuff only a few years ago, with the help of X-Men and all of the comic movies, and the awesome Ultimate Alliance video games, I have a few questions for you guys. Every person seems to have a unique talent but Black Widow, she's just someone that can kick some ass? What's the backstory to her? Same with Hawkeye. Also how did Thor manage to return to earth? I thought he wasn't able to since the Bifrost was destroyed in Thor. I've also been reading some comics lately, can anyone tell me which comics to focus on that goes along with the movies of the characters, or what's going on in the Avengers? Me and my girlfriend would love to read them. Speaking of comics, I recently read "Thor: The Trials of Loki" and I loved it. Really showed how Loki kinda cracked and turned on his own family and gods. Ohh brings me to another question. You guys said the 2 birds were the spys for Odin. In this comic the 2 spys are wolves and named Geri and Freki. Are those the same? Can they change shape? I'm sooo pissed I left before the final end credits and missed them all eating. Me and the gf are going to see it again at some point in 3D, just a fantastic movie. -------------------- |

I watched Thor and Captain America today and after finishing those two decided I needed more. So I hopped in my car and went to see The Avengers. Awesome movie.
I'm pretty sure I was the only one at the theater to pick up on Tony calling Hawkeye Legolas. -------------------- 5-hole.com

Every person seems to have a unique talent but Black Widow, she's just someone that can kick some ass? What's the backstory to her? Same with Hawkeye. As is always the case in comics, the real answer is completely convoluted and in some versions of her origin, Black Widow does have "super powers" (bio-technological enhancements!) but, for the most part the answer is, no, she does not have super powers. She's just a really kick ass former Soviet spy. Her primary gimmick is her little wrist mounted energy weapons. (The Black widow's bite.) Hawkeye also does not have super powers. He's just a master marksman. In the comics it was indeed a love affair with Hawkeye that led to her defection and she did indeed spend some time working for Shield. QUOTE I've also been reading some comics lately, can anyone tell me which comics to focus on that goes along with the movies of the characters, or what's going on in the Avengers? Me and my girlfriend would love to read them. That's a hard question to answer. I'm not a huge Avengers buff and the group has been through about a billion iterations so I'm not really sure which the best runs are considered to be or how the current run is. The movies seem to be loosely based on a combination of the original, early Silver Age origins of the group and the alternate universe continuity, The Ultimates. A little on both: Silver Age Avengers: Issue one of The Avengers featured Iron Man, Thor, The Hulk, Ant-man and The Wasp facing off against Loki. A thawed out Captain America joined the group with issue #4. (His first appearance since the Golden Age.) Ant-man and The Wasp were romantically involved so the movies have just substituted two of the bit characters. The Black Widow first faced off against the Avengers as a villain in issue 29 and joined the group not long after. Hawkeye joined the group early in their history as well. There are various inexpensive reprints available of these early issues. Dated but probably still fun. The Ultimate line of comics was an attempt by Marvel to launch a line of comics for more casual readers set in a new parallel universe freed from the constraints of 40+ years of history and all of the convoluted continuity that has resulted from that long history. Some of the titles were more successful than others and the Ultimates was one of the most popular. The Ultimates was actually a series of mini-series and my opinion is right in line with the consensus which is that they started strong and got a little less good with each series. Mark Millar, the initial writer of The Ultimates is a little controversial in that some people feel like he often goes for shock over substance. This is true but it works in short doses. The first Ultimates mini-series is definitely worth checking out and the second is mostly worth checking out. They should both be collected in TPB on Amazon. Ironically, the Ultimate Universe evenutally died because it developed its own convoluted continuity problems in a fraction of the time it took the regular Marvel universe to develop such problems. Millar was at least partially to blame for the mess that the Ultimate Universe degraded to as writers competed to see who could be the most "Extreme." There was a Black Widow limited series that I had fond memories of which I think was this one: http://www.amazon.com/Black-Widow-Devin-Gr...974&sr=8-15 If memory serves, I ordered it in TPB because I remember it being great when it came out and then I was a little less impressed when I re-read it but this was a while ago so I may be mis-remembering. /nerd This post has been edited by rightbug: May 21 2012, 03:02 PM -------------------- |

Finally saw this at a drive in last night.
I haven't read the thread, and have no clue how it got so long, but the movie was entertainingly well done for such a goofy premise. In large part due to the performances and some of the lines, and the goofiness was expected. I enjoyed that The Hulk was an unstoppable force, unstoppable even by physics! It made him the first on-screen Hulk I've seen that was awesome. I hope in the next one Tony Stark or someone manages to turn him into the grey Hulk. Also, I was trying to figure out how this movie cost so much when they spent so much damn time on that ship, never getting off that damn ship, and then I realized they spent $200M blowing up Manhattan really, really well, with lots of well choreographed fights. Money well spent. This post has been edited by Beamer: Jun 24 2012, 01:29 PM |
