Man, I don't know how I feel about Bon Iver, but Holocene seems like a really good song.

The Givers album is really growing on me. Very cool and happy stuff.

Also, starting to get extremely psyched about going to the first of three National shows I am hitting this week. Tonight War on Drugs is opening, Thursday Wye Oak, and Saturday Cliff and I are going together and we're totally gonna make out.

Looking forward to it! Is there anyone opening Saturday? How was the show last night?

The Beacon is a weird theater sometimes - I have seen some amazing shows there, but in some places the acoustics aren't the best. We have pretty good seats for Saturday's show though, so I think it will be good. I was up in the balcony last night. As for the National themselves, they seemed a smidge lethargic at times, but overall were enjoying themselves a lot. I don't want to ruin anything for you, but there were some really great moments and songs throughout the show.

War on Drugs sounded great, was really wondering how they would come off in a big space like that. Not familiar with the opener on Saturday.

Bon Iver does a good cover of Bonnie Raitt's "I Can't Make You Love Me". I mean, that song is perfect in every way so it's hard to fuck up, but I do like it.

Fenway Park, in Boston, is a lyric little bandbox of a ballpark. Everything is painted green and seems in curiously sharp focus, like the inside of an old-fashioned peeping-type Easter egg. It was built in 1912 and rebuilt in 1934, and offers, as do most Boston artifacts, a compromise between Man's Euclidean determinations and Nature's beguiling irregularities. - John Updike

Oh man. I may need to put a late entry on the best of the year list.

Hail Mary Mallon is a collaboration between Aesop Rock, Rob Sonic and DJ Big Wiz. It's so good to hear Aesop Rock again. This is all because Mike and I were talking rap and Aesop Rock came up.

I used to listen to a lot of ambient stuff. Stars of the Lid, Windy and Carl, Loscil, all that Kranky stuff. Last ambient album I really liked was Growing's Color Wheel. I sort of got bored with it, but Oneohtrix Point Never and similar synthy, Krautrock-influenced stuff has got me interested again.

I'm pretty excited that this will be the next Milli Vanilli scandal in music. There is no way this girl had anything to do with writing those songs, nor will she be able to sing them live.

She's been around for a while apparently. Her whole image is manufactured by lawers and publicists, but here's here as Lizzy Grant (her real name)

She may not have written them, but shes got the voice.

Oh! I heard this too. They sounded fantastic live. It's almost too bad that sour-puss Morrissey got all the attention, when the musicians in the band (obviously, mostly, Johnny Marr) were so talented. As a live band, the music came through and not the Mo's ridiculous lyrics.

Did you know Live Nation offered Morrisey and Marr a split on $100 mil in 2009 to do some sort of Smith's tour and they could have chosen the rest of the band, and they declined? $100 mil. That is hate.

So lately I've been listening to a bunch of Jazz for some reason on Pandora's Essential Jazz channel. I dont' really know much about Jazz, so if any of you guys have any suggestions on artists I should check out, let me know. I tend to prefer instrumental stuff when it comes to Jazz, so keep that in mind. Thanks.

Yeah, this kind of music really isn't my bag normally, but something about this album is very compelling to me. Doesn't hurt that Pitchfork and other indie pubs pimped the hell out of it.

Good thing we have a jazz thread already! http://rangerland.net/forum/index.php?show...hl=jazz++thread

I am always happy to make recommendations. As I said in the thread, all-time faves are Coltrane and Monk, who are in genres of their own. Some of their music can be really out there at first. Others would include the hard boppers I listed in that thread, like Art Blakey (try "Moanin'" or "Night in Tunisia") and Dexter Gordon ("One Flight Up" or "Doin' Alright"). You also can't really go wrong with most of the Blue Note catalog.

OK all, I'm trusting you.

I have itunes gift card money to spend and I plan on buying 2 albums.

I'm not going to list every album I have as that would be silly, but some of my favorite music I've been listening to this year has been

Mumford and Sons
The Head and the Heart
Regina Spektor
Black Keys

so...go!

Snooty answer: sell the iTunes gift cards and get Spotify with the money.

If I had to pick albums off my best-of-the-year list that are even in the neighborhood, I'd say you should check out The Decemberists' The King Is Dead, Milagres' Glowing Mouth or Beirut's The Rip Tide, but I'm not certain they're at all what you're looking for.

Spotify similar artists to the bands you listed, whom I respect and fit the bill with recent work I've listened to, are The Decemberists, The Avett Brothers, and Foster The People. Also worth noting is The Civil Wars, who I saw pop up on top 50 lists, and sound fairly Mumford and Sons-ish to me, except they're a male-female duo.

Foster the People and Two Door Cinema Club are also bands I've been digging.

True. It's a great music try-out service. I only pay for it so I have access on my phone. (And because the ads make me crazy, but whatever)

This is a good call. I'm going to go ahead and say that you should also get We Are Augustines' album "Rise Ye Sunken Ships" and also The Tallest Man Alive's album "The Wild Hunt." I personally did not care for The Civil Wars which surprised me as, on paper, they should have been a good fit. Also, 'not sure if it's available on iTunes yet but check out Of Monster's and Men on YouTube and see if it's your cup of tea. In my best of post I referred to them as a twee version of Mumford and Sons.

The free version with ads is still worth it. I just can't do offline streaming, and I'm sure tons of other cool stuff, but I love it none the less.

I strongly second this. I'm still using the free version. Personally, I'm going to pay for it when the sixth month trial is up, even though I also can't really stand another monthly fee but Spotify is very much worth it. The free version lets you listen to just about any album you think you might possibly be interested in in its entirety before you buy it. Hard to go wrong with that.

I can't believe you guys have been using the free versions all this time. Those banner and audio ads were driving me insane. So worth the $5/month. Then again, I listen to it all day long.

The movie didn't live up to it, but the song did. Karen O rules.

Telekinesis - 12 Desperate Straight Lines.

Pretty solid so far. Saw it on a couple of Top 20 of 2011 lists.

Went to see the Givers last night - glad I did, they're fun live. I only like two or three songs off the CD, but they have tons of energy and a cool sound in person. The instrumentation is pretty standard/traditional, but they get sort of an unusual or futuristic sound out of it, maybe from the synth or the dual drum set. "Saw You First" was especially good.

Forgot who it was that posted about Frank Turner in the Best Of thread, but I'm digging it. I like the sort of punk troubadour sound of it.

Also, I liked Strange Mercy so much that I'm going back into into St. Vincent's early catalog. Some of the songs on her first album toe the line between quirky and silly perfectly.

Love the lyric of the chorus - "I'll be so good to you, you won't realize I'm gone." A plea for closeness and the ability to duck out whenever she wants, at the same time.

Jim James, Jay Ferrar, et al. team up for a Woddy Guthrie tribute album and tour:

I know this is like the seventeenth Guthrie/Seeger/Kerouac tribute in the last three years, but whatever, I'm there.
