Having a Healthy Choice microwave meal for lunch at my desk. Didn't pay much attention to the ingredients. Tastes horrible, so I looked at the ingredients. Sure enough, cilantro. Blech. yucky.gif Which leads me to my poll.

Interestingly, I find ginger to taste soapy, too, but with a little soy sauce I'll definitely eat it.

Wow. I've never thought of either as being soapy. My experience with cilantro is limited to salsa and pico de gallo, and ginger to sushi.

Unless ginger and lemon tea counts...?

The problem isn't the cilantro - the problem is the Healthy Choice micro-meal. Not saying that I don't eat them, but they're not so great...

I like both. I don't know where the "soapy" thing comes from. Were too many people made to eat soap as kids by their parents or something? Cilantro's required in good Mexican food and a lot of Thai food. And what's wrong with ginger? Good stuff there!

Thai? Of all the thai places i've been to i never saw much with cilantro at all. They use a lot of basil though.

I remember making a quesadilla once with the supposed Applebees recipe- That called for cilantro. My reaction then was "this tastes like soap." As for ginger, I don't know that I've ever had it straight, but I love ginger-ale so I went with yummy.

EDIT: And, yes, I am scarred from being forced to taste soap by my mother.

I would never pretend that it was 'authentic' or even generally good food, but we do like their quesadillas. God help me, I'm weak.

Oh I'm with you on that. I looove quesadillas.

I think we Americans are just addicted to sandwiches, or anything even vaguely resembling a sandwich.

This is a good article about cilantro and why it tastes like soap to some people.

Cilantro Haters, It’s Not Your Fault

QUOTE
Flavor chemists have found that cilantro aroma is created by a half-dozen or so substances, and most of these are modified fragments of fat molecules called aldehydes. The same or similar aldehydes are also found in soaps and lotions and the bug family of insects.

Soaps are made by fragmenting fat molecules with strongly alkaline lye or its equivalent, and aldehydes are a byproduct of this process, as they are when oxygen in the air attacks the fats and oils in cosmetics. And many bugs make strong-smelling, aldehyde-rich body fluids to attract or repel other creatures.

The published studies of cilantro aroma describe individual aldehydes as having both cilantrolike and soapy qualities. Several flavor chemists told me in e-mail messages that they smell a soapy note in the whole herb as well, but still find its aroma fresh and pleasant.

I was doing some grocery shopping today, saw some cilantro, and thought, "nope, can't buy that stuff, it tastes like soap." I didn't need to buy any anyway, but I thought you might like to know that you've had an influence on me.

The problem isn't with the cilantro or ginger, but the fact that it was a Healthy Choice microwave lunch.
