well, I have the old-school style tunic, so I guess Shatner Kirk. I also haven't done enough sit-ups to be Pine Kirk...

I fucking LOVE the new movie. Only have a couple of nits about it, but that's for another thread, where I'd likely be talking to myself.

QUOTE(Rhino @ Oct 28 2009, 02:51 PM) *
Not necessarily. I only saw it once, but I noticed a couple of continuity errors too. Wait, I should pivot this back to the thread...

That's fun. Ok, I'll start. My name is Gary and I have a problem...

--I can name most TNG episodes from just the blurb in the program guide. (Some are pretty vague, though. The crew of the Enterprise has to deal with two warring factions. Really?)

--I own the blueprints to the Enterprise D. (Not just the Technical manual, mind you. The blueprints.)

--I understand the significance of the following nicknames: The Great Bird of the Galaxy, The Killer B's, "cabbage head"

As for the movie, the biggest nit that stands out was the crew of the ship that Kirk's father was on (don't remember the name, sorry) had the swooshy delta insignias on their uniforms. That was originally the Enterprise logo only and wasn't adopted as the Starfleet standard until much later.

Mike should put up an over/under on the Bookie page for how long until Jen Burns calls us nerds.

I've been a TNG nerd ever since my dad sat me down when I was about 9 years old and had me watch the episode The Inner Light with him, which is still one of my top 5 favorite episodes of all time. I stay up 2 or 3 nights a week and watch it at 1am on WGN.

LOVE TREK. Not a Trekkie. Seen about 6 or 7 of the 11 movies. Sorry I think it was 7-10 were just crap didn't bother. I'll see 'em eventually. Can watch TGN for HOURS. Have cousins that are trekkies. Risked my life to see the latest Star Trek movie with friends of mine as soon as it came out after school. What? It was epic.

o'viously, I'm an OS guy, but prolly would have been geeky for all Treks including NG had I the time to sit and watch when they were new.

On the new movie:
I've seen it 5 times at the theater. Yes. 5. Yes, I must be obsessed. And, possibly 5 other times via other, umm, media.
It bothered me that they couldn't beam Spock's folks out of a freakin' cave when they're in orbit above Vulcan, but they CAN beam Spock and Kirk from Titan to the Narada which was orbiting Earth. It also bothered me that the house was full of cadets at the end when most of them got whacked in the slaughter at Vulcan. I also think I'd wear a t-shirt that said: USS Kelvin Survivor
peep MemoryAlpha, yo.

Never gave a crap about any of the Star Trek shows or movies. None ever appealed to me. With that said, I do want to see the new movie as it looks good. I have a copy, it is just a matter of finding the time to watch it.

don' be sorry, click---> here.

I just watched ST again and have decided that Nero= Spock's Khan. In fact,
the whole movie is actually a vehicle about Spock more than any other character, just as the entire Star Wars series was not about the Skywalkers, but the adventures of R2-D2 and how it's actions brought balance to the force. Truly, it is a droid's tale.
edit because I can't fucking type.

I finally cracked yesterday after work. Couldn't wait another day.
Not.
One.
Day.

I stopped at Tarzhay and picked up a $24.99, 6ft. HDMI cable.
I stopped at BestBi and picked up the $79 Insignia Blu-ray (these are disco'd and going fast in favor of the new model which is "Wi-fi for Netflix" rigged) and the 3 disc Star Trek Blu-ray set. I walked past the $52.99-identical-in-every-way-to-the-ones-at-Tarzhay HDMI cables and emotionally sprinted (because ACTUAL sprinting with goods in a BestBi will get you killed) to the register to check out with my new toys.

I haven't finished the special features yet, but did roll the deleted scenes. Some are pretty cool and carrying bonus insight into the characters. Some would have changed the whole movie if they were left in. None belonged in the final cut, but all had something to offer. Sweetness.

Did I mention I love this damned movie? I mean, it only a fucking movie, but... Damnit. It owns me.

W.
T.

okay, so, what's the word for beyond obsession?
Was gonna watch ST4-The Whalers. Got sidetracked wondering who played Spock's parents in the OS. Turns out, it was the same actors: Leonard and Wyatt. After brief IMDB search, instead watched OS episode: Journey to Babel (yeah, I fucking own the OS on DVD. You're not surprised, are you?) first and saw where another GIANT chunk of inspirations for the new movie came from.

I am a detective. I go, and detect. cool.gif

Watched an episode from TOS season 1 last night, The Corbomite Maneuver. Questions. And spoiler alerts, obviously.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Corbomite_Maneuver

Was the whole thing a ruse on Balok's part, or just parts of it? Balok wanted to test their intentions to see if they were peaceful or not, but what was the actual test they passed? They couldn't fire on Balok because he turned the ships functions off. Did they pass the test in that they came and "rescued" him once his ship was supposedly stranded during the tow? But what if Kirk didn't come up with his corbomite bluff, then what would've happened? Or what if the Enterprise didn't break free during the tow? Yes, he's a brilliant and creepy little alien child with the teeth of 60-year old, but it seems a little far fetched for him to assume these things would've happened.

I've been watching TOS episodes recently too, and yeah, this episode bugged me. It's fun for Balok and his avatar, and it's good character development for Kirk, in that it's an early example of him being calm and intrepid in the face of superior force. But the central concept of the Corbomite maneuver is just ridiculous to me. "Uhh, you can't shoot us you know, because we, uhhh, we have this explosive stuff you see? And no, you can't see it, because..." And right, Balok is a hyper-intelligent being who says that he already scanned the Enterprise's databases to get a sense of what they were like, but needs to test them again to see how they would respond? I guess you could interpret all of the points you mention as him testing other beings for the thrill of interaction, since he admits to being so isolated.

My favorite of the TOS episodes I've watched so far is the first encounter with the Romulans, "Balance of Terror": http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Balance_of_Terror

raised watching TOS reruns after school. Most of those shows are sing-alongs as the screenplays are phaser-welded into my brain.
Balance of Terror and The Enterprise Incident are very much awesome dramas.

Well this is cool (however you choose to define that term) - "The Best of Both Worlds" remastered and getting the big screen treatment, one night only:

Select theaters nationwide on April 25th. You can search by zip code in the link.

Reminder, this is tonight, for those interested. Should be fun. nerd.png

I think the only thing I know about Star Trek is they touch their little badge to talk to someone on the other side of the ship..... but they never touch it to end the conversation. How does the badge know when you've finished talking? It could be really awkward if you finish talking to someone you dont like and start telling your mate what a jerk they are while the badge is still on.

So, wait:

new movie spoiler
Cumberbatch is Khan? That's disappointing. Would have liked to see a different villain get the big screen treatment. I had my hopes up for Gary Mitchell.

Saw it in 3D. Really well done. Bones makes a funny joke about getting bit by Gorn babies. Would recommend.
