I just realized the new Staind album is out. Big fan of them (mostly because I think they are a great band live, especially listening to Aaron Lewis sing). I like the new song quite a bit. So I'm going to have to go get the new disc today. Yes. I'm buying it. Not downloading it. Bite me.

I'm a food snob too, so I figured I might as well add another title.

But seriously? Staind? They're still around? I thought they'd be doing the "Support Bands For Flash-In-The-Pan One-Album Wonders" tour with Evanescence, Candlebox and Savage Garden. Ooh! If you hurry, there's a show playing in Huntsville, Alabama tonight with special guest Poison!

See if you shed the snobbery maybe you'd see that Aaron Lewis can actually sing and that's why people like me like Staind. Like I said, they do an excellent live show. I've been trying to get to see Lewis' acoustic solo show for years, but it is always, always sold out. Wait, the shows are always sold out? Flash in the pan singers/bands don't sell out shows.

Not to mention they're from New England (Springfield, Mass.) so I've got to support the local product.

Uh, yeah. There's no such thing as "Can sing." There's "You like his voice." I think he sounds like a teenager whining at his parents after taking estrogen.

And by this point it should be evident that musical talent and selling out shows have little to no correlation, otherwise the Backstreet Boys and Britney Spears would be, like, the most talented bands evar!

Till fucking Lindemann is my definition of a good singer. Aaron Lewis doesn't have a quarter of the range or the power that he does. But Lewis did do a duet with this guy!

Hey, look! More sold-out concerts!

Just for fun, excerpts from the sadly defunct Your Band Sucks on metal:

QUOTE
I have to laugh when I hear metalheads complain that some of the best pure musicians of our time are being ignored and neglected by the ivory-tower establishment just because they play in the metal genre. Here, it’s simple: imagine if William Butler Yeats only wrote poems about dogs eating peanut butter, and if he used only the same fifteen or twenty words in every single poem. People who espouse the shredding merits of metal guitarists and the double-bass technique of metal drummers crack me the fuck up. Maybe they also think books are better when they have lots of pages.

This passage feels relevant:

QUOTE
Stop tainting our discussions. When the grown-ups are talking about real music, stay the fuck out of it. If we’re talking about our favorite singers, we don’t care about how low your Christ-slaughtering Norwegian boyfriend can croak. If we’re talking about our favorite guitarists, zip up your stupid fucking mouth, because nobody gives a shit how fast your favorite metal guitar-secretary can type gibberish on a fretboard. “Pretend” that metal isn’t music. “Pretend” that metal is something else altogether, and that you have nothing to add to a discussion about music, because we’re talking about something entirely fucking different.

I only say “pretend” because “realize” might be too strong a word for these hopeless dorks.

Also, just because I'm equal opportunity:

QUOTE(YBS)
Top Ten Worst Rock Songs...

2. Staind – It’s Been Awhile
It’s amazing that the sort of person who would listen to this song would also probably the sort of person who would make fun of emo kids. As lame as emo is, as whiny and annoying as it is, not even the most lugubrious Dashboard Confessional song even comes close to the lameness of Staind. Being whiny and pathetic isn’t even half of what’s wrong with the song, either; the lyrics just don’t make sense. They do not parse properly in any sort of English grammar. Take this one for example: “It’s been awhile since I could stand on my own two feet again.” Now, if he were saying that it had been a while since he could stand on his own two feet, that would make sense. But “again?” Just what the hell tense is this supposed to be in? The song is bad enough already without this kind of inexcusably sloppy songwriting.

BTW, Till Lindeman is the lead singer of Rammstein. No growling there, and it's not even metal by most standards. Also notice the words "my definition," which nods towards the subjectivity of it. I can point to range and power as concrete examples of him having more ability, though. Not that it'll change anyone's tastes.

BTW, excellent link to a site that uses the word "lugubrious!"

You know, bagged dicks are okay, but I much prefer them in canned form, particularly the Lay's Dix variety.

So does Larry Craig, allegedly.

Staind sounds like every other band to come out from that time, from Nickelback to Three Days Grace.

It was annoying to be in Boston when all these interchangeable bands were huge and the radio was one giant cluster of safe, unchallenging, uninteresting rock.
It was kind of like the Devils and their wingers - one would come, one would go, and no one would have a clue the song changed.

I'm seeing Kenny Chesney today. I hate country music more. Passionately. It's painful for me. Even worse, I hear this guy sounds like Jimmy Buffet with a twang. Jimmy Buffet is the devil. Twangs are signs of the devil.
So long as I remember my ear plugs it should be an awesome time.

Well, I'm into metal and hard rock. I'm big into the 80's thrash -- Slayer, Anthrax, Megadeth, Metallica, etc. I'm also into some of the "New wave of American heavy metal" such as Trivium, Mastodon, and Machine Head. Tons of other stuff too...Opeth, Maiden, Priest, Tool, etc. I don't really know what my peers listen to because most of them are into shitty rap, country, or metalcore.

Actually, he's trying to write an article slamming country music fashion so he can get an internship at Vogue too.

Several, actually.
It was a group of mostly girls, some of my best friends here. I went to tailgate. I wasn't the only one that loathed the music so I had people to talk to during the Poets and Pirates tour. We only saw about an hour and a half of music.

And, on the way home, I got to play Are You Nervous with three girls simultaneously. Or, rather, they played on me. And no, I was not nervous. Girls, just so you know, guys never are when it's on them. We're more likely to be on you.

Every time I put on Incubus -- most especially their old stuff -- it's like I'm rediscovering a lost treasure.
Been listening to a bunch of Incubus lately. I actually like the newest of their albums (not as much as the old stuff). Crow sucked hardcore. But Light Grenades is pretty good.

I love Incubus. Make Yourself is one of my favorite albums of all time. Every song is just awesome.
