Fenway Park, in Boston, is a lyric little bandbox of a ballpark. Everything is painted green and seems in curiously sharp focus, like the inside of an old-fashioned peeping-type Easter egg. It was built in 1912 and rebuilt in 1934, and offers, as do most Boston artifacts, a compromise between Man's Euclidean determinations and Nature's beguiling irregularities. - John Updike

I don't think I've read one single article about the Royals all off-season. Gil Meche retired, I think. They have a good farm system. Or something.

Predictions for Boston:
1. Adrian Gonzalez will be the best hitter in the AL this season.
2. The bullpen wont be as strong as people think
3. Bucholz will regress while Beckett rebounds. Dice-K will still suck.
4. The lack of depth will burn them during the season.
5. Jon Lester will finish in the top-3 in Cy Young voting
6. With Ellsbury and Drew having sub-par years, a supremely slow starting Ortiz and a bottom third that consists of Saltalamacchia and Scutaro the offense wont come close to 900 runs.

97-65 - 1st in the AL East

Don't see Ellsbury sticking around too long.

They're going to win the division, beat the Yankees and Rays, win close to 100 games ... yet lack of depth is going to "burn" them? I'm not sure a first-place team is "burned" by anything. Made slightly tepid, perhaps. Noticably tanner? "Feel the singe of the season, AL East leaders!"

But take that, Burns! You guys totally should have signed Justin Maxwell.

The Red Sox are coming off a season in which they lost a massive amount of playing time to injury. They failed to protect themselves against long-term injuries by bolstering their depth in the AAA level. I'm not the only one bringing this up. You'd realize that if you actually studied baseball and the league heading into 2011. But hey, thank god the Yankees will be paying a 41 year old Derek Jeter 18 million bucks because of a backhand flip in 2001!

By burned I mean they will lose guys to injuries, most likely not long term like last year, and they will have to trot out below replacement level guys in their stead.

I like that this is all a setup for declaring the Yankees to be scrappy fighters when they're in contention with their paltry lineup featuring four 2010 All-Stars, A-Rod, Sabathia, and Teixiera. Wow! There's no quit in this team! They just don't know when their bloated payroll is beaten by that other bloated payroll! Can you believe how these guys dug deep to see the champion within? They're more important than Jackie Robinson.

Hey man, every time a home run ball is pulled in by a fan, Derek Jeter will be mentioned. Can Jackie Robinson say that for himself?

Really? That's what you took away from that? Interesting. Because all I wanted to do was tweat Greatone, who somehow thinks that the Yankees should be patted on the back for doing absolutely nothing of note in the offseason. I think this is the end of the run for them, sure to prompt about a half-dozen books dissecting their demise. But at least they have a few more draft picks! That will surely bring me comfort and Joba Chamberlain -- and it's absolutely TERRIBLE that he showed up to camp in less than the best shape of his life -- when Joba is throwing batting practice to the S-- in August with the Yankees ten games out.

These posts so early in the season make me all warm and fuzzy inside.

And all I want to do is tweak you! Because no matter how horrible you want to make out the Yankees' offseason to be (and it certainly was not glorious), it's not like they're some shitty team now. But they won 95 games last year, are bringing back a large majority of that team - and of course already there are a half-dozen books on their demise in your head. It's not enough that they're more or less maintaining a team that won a World Series two years ago and went to the ALCS last year. Should they achieve highly this year? I can't imagine the platitudes you'll find. World beaters. Jackie Robinsons, the whole lot.

Oh, I heard a rumor on the radio that Andy could Still return this season?

I really don't care as long as Andy doesn't announce he's coming back from a suite at Yankee stadium during the Seven inning stretch.

I don't think Waldman could handle it...

I think I'm going to go back to the Yankees thread. At least there I can criticize the team without it weirdly twisted into another reason to hate Yankees fans. "How dare Yankees fans complain about their own team -- only we can do that!" I feel like a Republican trying to argue for tax cuts at a soup kitchen.

They could be like Miguel Cabrera.

QUOTE
According an arrest affidavit, a deputy spotted a car Cabrera was driving, smoking on the side of Okeechobee Road in Ft. Pierce, about 100 miles southeast of the Tigers' spring-training base in Lakeland. Cabrera had an odor of alcohol on his breath, his eyes were bloodshot and watery, and his speech was heavily slurred, according to the report.

In the arrest affidavit, deputies said Cabrera repeated, “Do you know who I am? You don’t know anything about my problems.” Cabrera then picked up a bottle of James Buchanan’s Scotch whiskey and started drinking, according to the report.

He'll likely be off to rehab for a few months.

Note how I didn't say the season looked promising solely because of what players have said (i.e. Beckett saying we're going to get 100 wins), I'm talking about the acquisitions in Crawford, Gonzalez, Jenks (and Aceves but whatever). The team knows what happened last year and they are 100% dedicated to it not happening again. Injuries could pop up, of course, so I'm hoping that when they do they aren't season-enders.

Easily the best part of that story is him swigging scotch in front of the arresting officer.

Oh yeah, and I'm a Tigers fan, so HOPEFULLY this isn't devastating. I mean Cabrera had a monster season last year, and the only signs were that he was going to improve.

BLAST YOU SCOTCH!

Adam Wainwright is probably getting Tommy John surgery. Tough offseason for Cardinals fans.

I will never grow tired of the now yearly tradition of EVERYONE saying that THIS IS THE YEAR for the Marlins, only for them to completely fade away to oblivion by the all-Star break.

Every single year.

I'm not going to argue your placement of the Mets, but no way the Marlins finish higher than the Braves.

I get that he is a great player and should go apeshit in that park, but he IS switching leagues and that make me think things might not be so smooth for him.

Zack Greinke will probably start the season on the DL with a fractured rib.

I like not facing him on opening day.
