So one of the things I remembered from last year was people pitching about bad penalties that were taken and how they would cost the team (see: Hollweg). I figured that a nice thing to be able to see during the season would be a layout of who takes penalties, who draws them, and how many of them either cost us or helped us.

I created a google spreadsheet that I think provides public access. This is my first time using google spreadsheets so if for some reason you're able to change the numbers around, please don't.

If anyone has any suggestions for other things to take into account (i.e. game winning goals) let me know sooner rather than later since right now there's only 9 games I'd have to go back and account for.

Here's the link: http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=pYF...75QMO_-5F1eN9Mg

I'll try and post a summary here every 8 games if I ever figure out how to copy the table over.

NOTE: This does not account for coincidental minors. Also, we haven't encountered a 5 on 3 goal for or against yet. I'm thinking that where there's a 5 on 3 goal either for or against I'll give credit and blame to e/ person equally w/ a 0.5. Thus, if Redden takes a penalty and 10 seconds later Rozsival takes a penalty and then a team scores a 5 on 3 goal both will get 0.5 blame. Conversely if they both drew the penalties and we scored 5 on 3 they'd both get 0.5 credit.

Hope its helpful, and let me know any comments and/or suggestions.

That's very interesting. I'd really like to see you add a pair of stats -- penalties committed and drawn in the 3rd period.

This way we'll be able to see who takes and draws the biggest penalties when the game is on the line. Of course not every game is on the line (tied or within two goals) in the 3rd period, but I bet 90% of them are.

You seem to have the permissions correct and the public can view but not edit.

How about SH goals? Obviously it happens but very unlikely and can change the game. Also, love the game winning goal stat. Google docs are so resourceful, but Rick has a point about other letting other people edit the spreadsheet.

I made two additional pages: additional stats, and detailed penalties taken.

The additional stats page will show penalties taken and drawn in the third period, the pp goals that result from them, as well as gwg from the pp (note: this accounts for all periods), and any pp goals that force overtime.

The detailed penalties page will simply show what types of minors e/ player has taken.
