I've been listening to Beastie Boys "Ill Communication" and the "Hustle and Flow" soundtrack.

Fenway Park, in Boston, is a lyric little bandbox of a ballpark. Everything is painted green and seems in curiously sharp focus, like the inside of an old-fashioned peeping-type Easter egg. It was built in 1912 and rebuilt in 1934, and offers, as do most Boston artifacts, a compromise between Man's Euclidean determinations and Nature's beguiling irregularities. - John Updike

The Hold Steady -- Stay Positive. Either their best album or their worst, depending on your perspective. I say best but I'm a little ashamed to admit that.

Wolf Parade -- At Mount Zoomer. If you liked Apologies to The Queen Mary, you'll like this. One of the least disappointing sophmore efforts I've heard in a while. I'm digging it a lot.

The Dodos -- Visiter. I don't know how to describe this so I'll snip from AllMusic. "Originally formed in 2006 as Dodobird by multi-instrumentalist Meric Long, unpredictable San Francisco indie rock duo the Dodos acquired their new moniker with the arrival of Logan Kroeber, a fellow West Coast artist whose penchant for experimental drumming and progressive metal melded perfectly with Long's interest in West African Ewe drumming and country blues fingerpicking."

If that sounds like fun, it is. Standout tracks "Fools" and "Jodi" are both available for download from the Hype Machine but the whole album is worth your time and money.

Right on, I'll be seeing both of these bands live next weekend along with a bunch of other really good bands including Fleet Foxes who I think are fantastic although they're definitely not for everyone. Folky and at times, churchy choir sounding. Great harmonies. But I'm sure, Bug, you've already listened to them.

Yes -- I haven't quite made up my mind about Fleet Foxes yet. I definitely did not dislike their album but it hasn't really caught me just yet. I should listen to it some more.

Seconded.

I'll also give a nod to AA Bondy's "American Hearts", Waylon Jennings' "Waylon Live (Remastered)", "A Nod is As Good As a Wink to a Blind Horse" by The Faces, and "Narrow Stairs" by Death Cab. It all depends on my mood, but those are the albums that I have in heavy rotation right now.

I'm also slightly disturbed that my iPod shuffle is virtually filled to the brim with older Rancid songs. I am beginning to think they were a way better band than I ever gave them credit for.

Indeed. Fred LeBlanc (lead singer/drummer) looks like he's possessed when he's up there. He used to climb the scaffolding at JazzFest, but he drank a little too much and he's too fat now. They are a lot of fun to see, but I agree, I never got too into any of their studio recordings.

I thought Absolution was Muse's best work. Showbiz and The Origin of Symmetry were good, but after a while they were sort of downers, especially Showbiz.

When Absolution came out I thought Muse finally hit right - they ditched some of the downerness and went straight-forward rock. I was pretty down on Muse as a whole by that point, not listening much, so I was surprised.

I haven't really paid attention to Black Holes, but I've liked it, just not as much.
I like the B-Sides of Hullaballo, most at least, but don't really care much about live albums. As such, I didn't even know HAARP existed.

I agree about Absolution being their best work. Showbiz isn't as good, but it's still good, considering it was their first attempt. It has glimmers of greatness peeking through as they're trying to figure out their sound. OoS was a lot better as an album, and then Absolution just blew it out of the water. I do like Black Holes a lot, but it's not quite as cohesive as Absolution. Basically, I feel like their not-as-good stuff is still pretty darn good.

H.A.A.R.P. is the CD/DVD recording of their concert at Wembley Stadium last year. Haven't had a chance to watch the DVD yet, but the CD was pretty good. Did any of you guys go to the concert last year when they came to MSG? They are so awesome live. Their energy level is really high, so it's a lot of fun.

I see on the wikipedia that they often throw deftones songs onto the ends of their songs.
That's kind of funny - the way I found out about the band was at a Deftones show. The lead singer had an advance copy of Origin of Symmetry and was air guitaring to it after the show.

I put Dr. D's favorite album up there on afterwards. Oh man, dark times, haha. I can't stand that album anymore.

A lot of indie rock...

British Sea Power: No Lucifer, Waving Flags, Remember Me, Carrion, Canvey Island, Atom- all great songs
Kings of Leon: Fans, The Runner, The Bucket, Ragoo, Knocked Up, On Call, Red Morning Light- all great songs
lots of Arcade Fire, but Keep the Car Running, Antichrist Television Blues, Intervention, Rebellion are their best, IMO
My Morning Jacket
DeVotchka

Another great album Giac , although I prefer the Dust album...Mark Lanegan is a great vocalist..he sang a couple songs with Mad Season (Layne Staley, Mike McReady of Pearl Jam, Barrett Martin and John Baker Saunders) - he also worked with Queens of the Stone Age on some tracks and now is with former Afghan Whigs lead singer Greg Dulli in a band caled the Gutter Twins - Saturnalia is the album and I would recommend it to any Lanegan fan.

Two of my favorites - have you heard any of Mudcrutch (Pettys new/old band) - the story is , he went out to California with his band, Mudcrutch , in the early 70's , they only released one single, broke up and Tom formed the Heartbreakers with one other member , now they have all reunited again..I heard a couple tracks , another recommendation.

You get TWO kings because I love Bob Marley too!!

I have been delving into a lot of classic Genesis lately. Albums like Selling England By The Pound, Foxtrot, Nursery Cryme, Wind and Wuthering...Seconds Out is a good compendium.

Thats one band that was always hit or completley miss with me...although I have not listened to all those albums. If you had to pick one album out of the bunch that you would recommend, which would it be?

I loooooOOOOOooooOOOooooove Screaming Trees. By far my favorite grunge scene band (although they existed a good while before and after it faded). Off hand either Invisible Lantern or Buzz Factory were my favorite albums, but I can't pull up my mp3 library and double check since I still don't have my computer back yet.

Don't they have a new album coming out? I did not love Z. I was hoping that the new one might appeal to me a bit more. (Edit: Yes -- Their new album, Evil Urges, was released in June. Looks like it's getting mediocre reviews but then, I don't put much stock in reviews.)

Now they do have a new album out and it's pretty good if you like Nada Surf. "Lucky" is the title.

BTW, Metacritic is a great site for keeping track of what's been released recently, what's coming up and what the general critical consensus is:

I always preferred The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, but that's just me.

IMO, Evil Urges doesn't compare to Z (or their older album It Still Moves). But I've heard they're awesome live and they're currently on tour. Saw one of their shows on Austin City Limits and wow.

Yeah, Lucky is pretty good. Gonna move her onto this album next.

My one buddy is talking up Shearwater. If you're a fan of Okkervil River, check these guys out.

Seconds Out is a good mix of their older sound. Very deep.

I've been rockin beavisnbutthead.gif out to alot of hardcore bands recently, H20's new album is sweet, and bad brains keeps finding their way on to my playlists. And I never get enough of Falcon, Chicago skapunk/punkska at its finest

Oasis is coming out with a new album October 7. It'll be called Dig Out Your Soul.

Chemical Brothers remix of one of the upcoming songs:

EDIT: I gave no idea how to embed a video, so here's a link.
