The shine is really coming off the new Fun. album for me. It Gets Better is just unlistenable for me, and when I put on the album, I find myself mostly listening to Some Nights through Carry On and then shutting it off.

I boo you. I can see why It Gets better can be grating but it always gets my foot tapping. If you really stop it after that, you're missing out on some good songs. I just checked the playlist and quickly played each song and I pretty much dig each one.

Ugh. Boo you. Here, I'll play along.
It Gets Better is beyond grating. Why they're auto-tuning an excellent voice is beyond me. That song is a disaster.
Why Am I Always The One is fine-to-very-good depending on my mood, it's strong enough lyrically, but it's a little slow at times.
All Alone and All Alright, take it or leave it. Snooze.
Stars has the AutoTune disease.

Pass.

I'm not exactly a guy who likes auto tune, but I find it interesting when bands like this who have people who can sing use it. I don't think it's the devil others perceive it to be.

See I agree with that, but Stars just sucks as a song and ruins his voice. Interesting? Sure. Horribly done in this case? You betcha.

Otherwise I think its a solid album. Wouldn't have made my top 10 last year, but then again its March and haven't been completely floored yet.

I'm really excited for the Julia Holter album out in a few days and obviously Fiona Apple.

I am very much digging the new White Rabbits album. This is an insanely catchy track:

Love the piano riff.

The Idler Wheel is wiser than the Driver of the Screw, and Whipping Cords will serve you more than Ropes will ever do.

Mid-June release. I'm seriously considering paying $180 to see her at the Music Hall via scalped tickets on StubHub. She's also playing at a Randall's Island on a very cool bill that also includes Beck, Phantogram, and Cults, which would certainly not be a bad compromise.

I'll say this -- Much as I love her albums, I saw her in concert when Extraordinary Machine came out and she was only okay live. (Damien Rice opened for her and stole the show.)

But color me very excited for the album!

I can see her either being amazing, or storming off the stage after two songs because too many people in the audience were talking. That Randall's Island festival may be a good compromise, that's a pretty great lineup Sunday.

Meanwhile, in anticipation of his new album coming out and a show in May, I've been giving M. Ward's last a spin. I loved what he did with Monsters of Folk, but never listened to his individual work. Pretty great.

Also heard about a band for the first time the other day, liking them - Bahamas. Heard them when I was waking up on my local station, then again on David Dye's show later that day, so it was serendipitous. They're signed to Jack Johnson's label, and the guy sounds a little like Amos Lee, which would ordinarily be two big strikes against them for me, but it's got a good, catchy vibe to it, and is not nearly as annoying as Johnson's stuff.

Re: Ms. Apple,

Funny, I actually preferred the unmastered, Jon Brion-produced version of Extraordinary Machine rather than the slicker, polished and, well, boring production/arranging of Mike Elizondo's version.

I'm curious to know how the new one is gonna sound. When the Pawn Hits the King... is one of my all-time favorite albums.

Been meaning to write about this for a few days now..

I saw Radiohead tape an episode of "Austin City Limits Live" last week at the Moody Theater in Austin, Texas. The Moody is a tiny little 1500 capacity soundstage inside the 3rd floor of the beautiful W Hotel in downtown Austin. Needless to say, seeing one of my favorite bands of all time in such a small setting was an oppurtunity of a lifetime for me. Every expectation was met and more.

The King of Limbs stuff live is just mindblowing. And I've gone on record as saying I wasnt a fan. That all changed. Clive Deamer, drummer of Portishead, is now the full time second drummer, and to watch them create all the loops with real drums and 8 limbs was just outrageous.

They played all of King of Limbs, a few off in Rainbows, a few off Kid A, There There and Paranoid Android, and a few brand new songs. The sound was perfect. Thom was perfect.

Because they were taping an episode of this show, cool moment happend when Thom stopped "Reckoner" half way through to re-start do to something being off. As a musician, seeing your heroes in a human moment is something else.

This show comes to the Prudential Center in May. I would imagine both nights are sold out, but if you have the desire and funds to do so, make it happen. The show is just wonderful.

My brother call me in a panic this weekend to say that he just checked the dates on his Radiohead tickets and saw it was the night before my wedding. I told him not to worry -- We scheduled the wedding late enough in the day that people could travel the day of. He's bringing me a shirt wink.gif

Chris, that is awesome you got to see them like that. Those opportunities are so rare.

After a slow start to the year, the shows are picking up. Going to see the New Multidues Woody Guthrie thing that Jim James, Jay Farrar et al. put together tomorrow, and then my favorite hand-waving buddy EMA at the Music Hall on Friday. The following week it really kicks in, and April is amazing. Fiona Apple, Mountain Goats, Wild Flag, Naked and Famous, War on Drugs, Monsters and Men, Perfume Genius, Horrors, Pulp, White Denim, Shabazz Palaces...it just goes on and on. I run myself into the ground with all these shows, but I just can't resist. So lucky to have them.

It's starting to sink in how great the New Multitudes guys were last night. Aside from the completely self-indulgent 15-minute finale, I mean. They played most of the CD, then for the "encore", which turned out to be an hour long, each came out and did a solo acoustic song, followed by the full quartet doing a song from each other's catalog. For Jay Farrar, it was "Bandages and Scars" off of Okemah, and for Jim James something off of At Dawn (I don't know that album), that brought the house down. So glad I finally got to see Jim James live, he really is a dynamo. Wish I was more into MMJ.

Lots of great tracks on the CD, this is one of my faves (just Jim James solo):

EDIT: ha, didn't listen to the whole thing, it's all four of them. This is a pretty good representation of how they sounded live.

I realize that I am 19 years behind the times on this one but, holy fuck, The Breeders' Last Splash is ridiculously good. This album could have been released yesterday. I can't imagine how mind blowing it must have been in 1993.

Yeah, it was pretty great.

Wow -- Their first album, Pod, is even better. Crazy.

This made me troll through some of my older stuff and I gave some re-listening to Mary's Danish "There Goes the Wonderstruck" - stylistically all over the place, definitely inspired by X, all of it quite good.

Saw them open for the Chili Peppers way back @90 and they had a tough crowd wanting more.

Anyone else listening to Grimes' new album? There some really solid tracks, but I don't know how I feel about the whole thing. Its interesting that's for sure.

Someone above - the old mole, I think? - said they really liked it. I think it's catchy, and I like one or two standout songs, but it's not really sticking with me. The vocals fall a little too much into the background IMO.

Who mentioned the new White Rabbits album recently? Was that you Mike? Some of the songs are positively Spoon-like; A very good thing in my book.

Yes. Funny you say that, because that was one of the knocks on that album in the Pitchfork review.

Does Pitchfork not like Spoon or did they find it derivative?

The latter. I think they're big Spoon fans over there. I know Transference got a pretty good review.

EVERYTHING is a derivative.
Unless they completely rip off the sound, substance and style...it shouldn't be knocked for being influenced by good art.
Makes me crazy when a critic uses that crutch.

I just happened upon Anne Briggs.
Turns out she was a huge influence to music I enjoy (Fairport Convention, Pentangle and deeper in the Brit Trad.Folk scene) Her version of "She Moved Through the Fair" is perfect.

It's definitely better on the second listen. I like it a lot more, but I understand what you mean about the vocals. Its definitely different form most of what's come out that's for sure.

I think I like it too. I'll have to spend more time with it.

Meanwhile, I'm really, really digging the new Delta Spirit. Kind of a new direction for them.
