I heard this afternoon on The Fans 20/20 that the NCAA is taking Paterno's name off the Big Ten Championship trophy.
This on top of his name being withdrawn for consideration for Presidential Medal of Freedom.

He admits to showering with boys but says he's not a pedophile.

Costas' interview with Sandusky is on Rock Center tonight at 10.

Costas crushed that interview, man. Assaulting Sandusky.

Also, I don't think any innocent person should ever pause for that long (or at all) when asked "Are you attracted to young boys?"

Exactly, that's what I was driving at. I think she probably should've excused herself, but I also don't think the terms of the bail were anything out of the ordinary to point to a reason as to why she should excuse herself.

Recusal issues are somewhat complicated for both attorneys and judges. I mean, it's not like you can just pull people off the street to try cases, and most are elected officials under the democratic idea that they reflect the values of their specific community, both for the victims and the accused. As far as conflicts go, this is extremely minor. What would be the conflict, actually? If she never met the man and disclosed her relationship to the organization he ran? I mean, you could very easily make an argument either way -- that she has sympathy for him (inferred for a volunteering for the organization he started) or that she's repulsed by him (inferred from her commitment to helped underprivileged children). Again, I hate that we allow our ridiculous media to distort a fully functional criminal justice system, especially since there are so many other non-functional aspects of it that rarely go reported (such as the insane cost to taxpayers to represent people that should not qualify for free representation).

By the way, I HIGHLY doubt that this man (guilty or innocent) commits suicide. Anyone who has dealt with child sex offenders would tell you that they generally don't express remorse. They generally rationalize their behavior by convincing themselves that their victims are highly advanced for their age and that they were the more aggressive ones. I didn't see his interview, but with life in prison at stake, he found it more important to clear his name in the court of public opinion at the risk of creating evidence against himself for his coming trial. If that doesn't speak to an irrational level of narcissism, I don't know what does.

Wow, that was a damning interview.

What does "horsing around" mean? Like, Jesus Christ, you admit to "horsing around" with young boys in the shower, then categorically deny that you had sexual contact with them? Not exactly the best way of convincing people of your innocence.

And before I get anyone jumping down my throat about the "court of public opinion," the only reason he did this interview, which seems incredibly dumb, is to convince people of his innocence. I can say he spectacularly failed.

Also, Bob Costa's line about if everyone is lying Sandusky is the center of a ridiculously large conspiracy was great too.

I think it's pretty terrific that Penn State has hired a private investigator (Louis Freeh) to investigate as far back as 1975 and, if any more victims surface, promptly report this to law enforcement ... who will then of course explain to the former director of the FBI that the statute of limitations will prevent them from taking any more action against anyone involved in the crimes. Thanks, Penn State!

I thought that it was strange that Sandusky and his wife had adopted many children (I think the number is either 6 or 8), and only one is a girl. You think that maybe the wife said, let's have at least one girl, and he relented? Well, now this has been reported:

QUOTE
In the latest twist to the Jerry Sandusky alleged child sex scandal, it appears that one of the two new sexual abuse allegations we told you about yesterday was made by a family member of the former Penn State football coach.

Sandusky’s attorney Joe Amendola told Sara Ganim of The Patriot-News that the allegations stem from difficulties within the child’s immediate family. He said “the assault is alleged to have occurred prior to Sandusky’s arrest earlier this month, but was not brought to the authorities attention until after the former Penn State coach was charged.

The Patriot-News is withholding the child’s relationship to Sandusky to shield the child’s identity."

This and the other new allegation are being investigated by the state's Children and Youth Services, which means the accusations are coming not from adults, but from children. Right now, there are eight other alleged cases mentioned in the Grand Jury report.

Yep. I don't like to see anyone suffer from lung cancer, but there was a lot of suffering that he covered up. So, no tears here. I feel for his family, but that's about it.

Is it more likely that the stress of this entire affair, the ruination of his program , his reputation, and everything he spent his life building ,contributed more to his current condition?

Years ago I greatly admired Joe Paterno.I thought he was everything that was right about college football. In recent years as he started to have some issues w/his players and his program and w/his refusal to retire I no longer respected what he was doing. I think he was out of touch w/what was going on in his program and it suffered w/some poor seasons. He was also out of touch w/the way the game had changed. I think the program suffered w/some poor seasons because of his pathetic and stubborn refusal to step down and allow the program to evolve. He was old and brittle and his mind was no longer as sharp. He was injured at least once on the sidelines during games and seeing him coaching from the press box was pathetic. He needed to retire and in retrospect he should've retired. If he had he probably wouldn't have been subjected to the same level of scrutiny he was after the shit hit the fan.I think he could've kept his legacy intact.
How do you go from having a treatable form of lung cancer to dying in a matter of months? I think this whole mess contributed to his death .I don't think he cared anymore whether he lived or died. He may have decided that dying was a better option. I'm not sad he's dead and that makes me feel like a bad person.

I feel vindicated, because I argued with several Paterno supporters that there was NO WAY he didn't know what was going on. You couldn't fart in State College without him knowing.

I feel vindicated, because I argued with several Paterno supporters that there was NO WAY he didn't know what was going on. You couldn't fart in State College without him knowing.

I hope they hold another candlelight vigil for good 'ol JoePa. And then stick their candles up each others asses, still lit.

I'm pretty glad the truth came out too. I have Penn State fan friends on facebook who were in what I can only describe as some kind of weird Stockholmn denial because they are normally very intelligent people. Now I can flaunt this in their faces.

I was going to end my quote with "I'm a dick, I'm a diiiick, suck my dick, I'm a diiick!"

But then I figured screw it. Having to watch these kids basically riot because their precious football coach was dared to be questioned was sickening to me. I immediately put this shit on my facebook knowing damn well they would read it and see their precious Joe Pa was a slime ball piece of shit.

I never believed for a second that Paterno didn't know what was going on. He had all the information and I was also convinced he told PSU admimistrators to not pursue the matter . Fuck him. His legacy is in ashes and rightfully so.
Yeah and those PSU students w/ their candlelight vigils can go fuck themselves too. Your icon was nothing but an enabler for a pedophile. I'm actually sorry now that Paterno passed away because he got off easy. He should be suffering public scrutiny, lawsuits, and the guilt for what he allowed to continue to go on.

Wow. Freeh report destroys Paterno and the top guys at PSU. This is from the statement from Freeh regarding the findings:

QUOTE
Taking into account the available witness statements and evidence, it is more
reasonable to conclude that, in order to avoid the consequences of bad publicity, the
most powerful leaders at Penn State University – Messrs. Spanier, Schultz, Paterno and
Curley – repeatedly concealed critical facts relating to Sandusky’s child abuse from the
authorities, the Board of Trustees, Penn State community, and the public at large.

Although concern to treat the child abuser humanely was expressly stated, no such
sentiments were ever expressed by them for Sandusky’s victims.

The evidence shows that these four men also knew about a 1998 criminal
investigation of Sandusky relating to suspected sexual misconduct with a young boy in
a Penn State football locker room shower. Again, they showed no concern about that
victim. The evidence shows that Mr. Paterno was made aware of the 1998 investigation
of Sandusky, followed it closely, but failed to take any action, even though Sandusky
had been a key member of his coaching staff for almost 30 years, and had an office just
steps away from Mr. Paterno’s. At the very least, Mr. Paterno could have alerted the
entire football staff, in order to prevent Sandusky from bringing another child into the
Lasch Building.
Messrs. Spanier, Schultz, Paterno and Curley also failed to alert the
Board of Trustees about the 1998 investigation or take any further action against Mr.
Sandusky. None of them even spoke to Sandusky about his conduct. In short, nothing
was done and Sandusky was allowed to continue with impunity.

Based on the evidence, the only known, intervening factor between the decision
made on February 25, 2001 by Messrs. Spanier, Curley and Schulz to report the
incident to the Department of Public Welfare, and then agreeing not to do so on
February 27th, was Mr. Paterno’s February 26th conversation with Mr. Curley
.
We never had the opportunity to talk with Mr. Paterno, but he did say what he
told McQueary on February 10, 2011 when McQueary reported what he saw Sandusky
doing in the shower the night before: “You did what you had to do. It is my job now to
figure out what we want to do.” Why would anyone have to figure out what had to be
done in these circumstances? We also know that he delayed reporting Sandusky’s
sexual conduct because Mr. Paterno did not “want to interfere” with people’s weekend.
To his credit, Mr. Paterno stated on November 9, 2011, “With the benefit of hindsight, I
wish I had done more.”

I was literally threatened by a former college friend because I had the audacity to criticize Paterno back when this alll broke out.

He literally texted me saying if I did not stop he'd knife my tires and find people to beat the shit out of me.

I wonder the look on his face right now.

Penn State is so so so screwed. Spanier needs to go to jail. And while this is morbid, it is a blessing in disguise Paterno passed away in January, because at this point, at the very least, he'd be having to take the stand in terms of civil suits.

And though they admit not finding a direct link, I can't help but get the idea that the investigators felt Sandusky's retirement was a consequence of the 1998 investigation. They note that pursuant to the retirement negotiations he received an unusual lump sum payment and emiritus status, both of which had never been seen before for someone of his rank.

Seems as though they were appeasing him to get him out of the spotlight before more allegations took place. But then they let him continue to bring kids to campus and shower with them, despite repeatedly telling him not to do it.

Also, the allegations raised by the janitors are particularly disturbing. One supposedly saw him performing oral sex on a victim, and another the same night saw him in the shower stall with a boy, and leaving the shower holding hands. This was the same night they saw Sandusky driving around the parking lot at both 11PM and 2AM, presumably looking at the building to see if police were called. They were scared to death of reporting it because of the power of the football program. They basically said if Paterno wanted someone gone, they would be gone, and that the university would do anything to protect its reputation, particularly as it applied to the football program.

What's the maximum charge the surviving members involved in this can be hit with? Please tell me it is something serious. I wish there was some way to charge people who knowingly ignore sexual abuse with conspiracy or better yet as accessories to the crime. The issue is how do you prove that they knew? You can't hit someone with an accessory charge because they may have suspected but didn't act. That'll cause people to start reporting any suspicion and that's wasteful/counterproductive use of law enforcement time. Gah. I hope Penn State is taken to task for this. Someone needs to punish their football program, if not the school in general, badly. Personally, I'd hit them with a 5 year ban. I'd like to ban them one year for every year this scandal has been going on but that'll never happen.

I can't imagine anyone recruited by Penn State football would even remotely consider going there. Their football program is going to be a shambles. To those folks in Happy Valley there probably isn't a worse punishment- as fucked up as that sounds .

His fucking family is a disgrace. Now they are launching their own investigation to clear his name:

http://www.freep.com/article/20120717/NEWS...y-Sandusky-case

And then there's this:

QUOTE
In the end, the board of trustees — bombarded with hate mail and threatened with a defamation lawsuit by Mr. Paterno’s family — gave the family virtually everything it wanted, with a package worth roughly $5.5 million. Documents show that the board even tossed in some extras that the family demanded, like the use of specialized hydrotherapy massage equipment for Mr. Paterno’s wife at the university’s Lasch Building, where Mr. Sandusky had molested a number of his victims.

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/07/14/sports/n...tml?_r=3&hp

Their lack of respect for the victims is fucking nauseating.

Paterno's family is going to lose all of his money via civil suits from the victims.
While it's not specifically their fault, it's still money he earned while horribly ignoring responsibility.

I can't get on the family too much, yet. They are probably still in a state of absolute shock. In their minds I truly believe they think he was innocent. All of this is happening way too soon after his death for a family to be able to cope with and I'm sure they want to believe more than anything that he wasn't involved.

I don't think it's lack of respect for the victims, I think it's delusional thinking.

I've made my opinions quite clear on how I feel about Joe and the Penn State program btw, this isn't a defense of them. I just don't think his innocent family should be raked over the coals for trying to clutch to the man they thought they knew.

Since I really don't follow college football at all, can someone explain what the vacating of the wins will do? Is it just a prestige thing? Also, I don't understand why they need to reduce their scholorships. That's punishing students no? I don't think that's fair.
