I've had In Rainbows going in my car (though I dont drive much) on my iPod for 3 weeks without changing it. Record has been out for nearly 5 years. I knew it inside and out before this current obsession. This means two things: This album has become one of my favorites of all time and I'm too lazy to reach into my center console to change it.

I do in fact believe a record should be out for at least 5 years before you can declare it an all-timer. Congrats, In Rainbows..you were first ballot.

I recently determined that In the Reins qualifies for me, for this exact reason. Boxer and High Violet might get Gretzky and Messier exceptions, though.

Meanwhile, why have none of you told me about Sleigh Bells?

For all you Several Shades of Why fans, Thurston Moore's 2011 release Demolished Thoughts is definitely worth a listen. A little softer and a lot more strings than Mascis, but still really damn good.

Thanks, Chris4 has also recommended them in the past, and that has now prompted me to queue them up. Of Monsters and Men is now finally on Spotify too , so I'm glad I can finally listen. You know that I am way too much of an IP goody-two-shoes to ever listen to a bootlegged copy.

Has anything come out this year yet worth listening to? By this time last year we were all already gushing over The King is Dead.

I'm not sure why you're even bothering. By September some new weirdo will have come out with something even more experimental than anything from 2011 and you'll have forgotten. Maybe you should just stay out of this thread 'til fall.

/bitter

Edit: Also, Of Monsters And Men is just an EP on Spotify. You're missing out on the full album.

Pretty psyched for Jenny and the Hand-Wavers' new album - the first single ("The Hand-Waving Song") is great. It's a completely amelodic cut of 2:30 of feedback, so it's right up my alley.

Mike B. I have the album on dropbox. You don't need to know where I got it. But seriously its worth it.

Also, Lana Del Rey in in 17 days. Don't care if her SNL performance is terrible.

I meant to ask, you posted her stuff awhile back and then Leedsy said "no way she'll ever be able to perform live" you tried to defend her and then she blew it on SNL.

Is that technically the xc jinx? Thoughts?

I'm not going to try and defend that awful SNL performance, but not including the fact that SNL performances are rarely very good she has had some live stuff online that has been very good.

I'm still excited for her album, so whatever.

But seriously has any artist ever done well on SNL especially since the whole "insert female pop artist I can't remember right now" lip syncing thing when Jude Law hosted like 5 years back?

Seriously? Yes. Yes they have.

Just this season Radiohead, Foster the People, Florence & The Machine, The Black Keys and Michael Bublé all killed it.

Last season you had performances that weren't stumbling pieces of trash by:

Kanye West, Bruno Mars, Paul McCartney (Who I think they let perform 4 songs), Arcade Fire, The Foo Fighters, The Strokes, and again The Black Keys and Florence & The Machine. That's not including people like Paul Simon and Elton John.

Fair enough, though I'll disagree on the Strokes I really didn't think it was mind blowing.

Look, I'm not going to say she didn't suck. She did. It was 2 songs on SNL though and the singles she has out are really good in my opinion. If you want to troll her that's fine. Go right ahead. I'm just excited for her album, if youre not cool.

EDIT: Let me clarify one thing though about the SNL comment. I don't watch it that much unless its an artist I really like. They play 2 songs, usually in a cramped space and I never expect much out of them. The last SNL performance I saw was Coldplay and it was horrible, but it was still cool seeing them. So I guess my comment was a little shortsighted.

I have itunes gift card money to spend and I plan on buying 2 albums.

Mumford and Sons
The Head and the Heart
Regina Spektor
Black Keys

so...go!

For everyone who is enjoy We Are Augustines, I cannot recommend Billy McCarthy's previous band, Pela, highly enough. Their album, Anytown Graffiti is one of my all time favorite albums. Unfortunately, it's not available on Spotify and there are no good samples on YouTube but you can get it on Amazon.

Been on a little bit of a Britpop kick lately, probably because of the news that a few of those bands are doing reunion tours, most notably Pulp and Stone Roses. My sis and I just got tix to see Pulp at Radio City in April, pretty psyched.

Also, The Mountain Goats posted that they were playing in Tampa tonight, which made me think of this:

and IIIIIIIIIIII will love you again

Has anything come out this year yet worth listening to? By this time last year we were all already gushing over The King is Dead.

The new Cloud Nothings album, Attack on Memory, is worth listening to. It's not great and it likely won't crack my top twenty but it's got some standout tracks and people with a higher tolerance for heavy lo-fi noodling may like it more than me.

<Puts on pimp hat>

Full review on my blog!

http://rightbug.wordpress.com/2012/01/26/c...tack-on-memory/

I didn't see nearly enough movies last year so I've decided to do 52 Movies in 52 Weeks this year. I polished off my old 52 Books in 52 weeks blog to review the movies and decided to do 52 albums as well. For 52 Albums effort, it will be 52 albums released in 2012.

http://rightbug.wordpress.com/

I'm probably not doing 52 Books this year but I am re-posting my Goodreads reviews to the blog as well just to keep with the pop-culture theme.

Is anyone else trying to get Bruce Springsteen tickets right now? I have two windows running in TM, each is saying a 15 minute wait minimum to get through. I'm not optimistic.

EDIT: d'oh. Turns out they're too smart for that. I got kicked off on my earliest attempt for having multiple windows trying at the same time. So much for that I guess.

Is Spotify Premium worth it that much? My 2 week travel period is over, and since Germany isn't one of the countries on Spotify's list I'm going to need to go premium to continue using it...

10 bucks a month is kind of steep, but if its worth it I may jump on board.

I don't have a smart phone (shocker, I know), so I don't use their mobile services, but the $5 a month for the ad-free version is beyond worth it. Then again, I'm like a rich lawyer and shit.

Also, how and why did I wait this long to give Wild Flag a spin?

I needed to get the 10 dollars a month one to use it abroad. I think it's worth it.

Music overload. Glad you finally got to them. They are in Germany next week, but too far away and on a week day. Sadface. Carrie Brownstein can do no wrong.

Also, Lana Del Rey Tomorrow! It's going to be such an overproduced hot mess, I'm excited.

The new Guided By Voices is everything you would expect from a GBV album -- Way too many songs but the high lights rank right up there with the best songs in their catalog.

This is the first album with the "classic" lineup since 1996.

I was going to review this album on my blog this week but it's like mental mercury. I like it well enough while I'm listening to it but it just slips away the second I turn it off. I reviewed the GBV album instead and may revisit Nada Surf for next week.

Edit: Ah -- That's off an older album. The new one is up on Spotify.

I'm seeing them this Thursday and for the love of god, hope they don't play that song. Their new album is snot bad. Not their best by a long shot but sticking to their guns and their familiar sound which I've always liked. It will appeal to existing fans but probably won't win them many new ones.

When I first read this, I thought "wow, he really hates their new album!"

We should develop a rating scale for new albums based on bodily secretions.

That was almost exactly what I was going to say in my review!
