why the fuck is it so much easier to run on a treadmill than it is outdoors? I can do over a mile on the treadmill before getting winded and need to walk for a little bit, but half a mile on the street and I'm huffing an puffing. Fuck. Is it that there's less resistance on the treadmill due to it moving as well or is it that I'm running at a faster pace outdoors and not realizing it? I need to run on the street more. When you run on a treadmill, you are doing roughly half the work needed to run on the street - you don't have to expend any energy to propel yourself forward. When you run on a treadmill, you should set the incline to at least two degrees to compensate. -------------------- Y'all laying up, doing shit. Nahmean, playing whatever little volleyballs they got on the beach and doing everything, the activities.

I was not very good in Physics btw. The only reason I passed is because the professor was a drunk and a bottle of scotch happened to find its way to his desk. Sorta true story.

I'll try that tomorrow Mr. Smarty Pants! That's if you care about your road running performance, I should say. If you're just doing it to burn calories or have a good cardio workout, then the disparity doesn't really matter. -------------------- Y'all laying up, doing shit. Actually i do care since we do a lot of street running at my gym. plus i want to get up to 5k level but hate running outdoors. If you haven't noticed, I'm not a fan of "people". Here's where crossfit gets dangerous. We were doing back squats today and going for new max weights. For my last set, where I would hit my new max weight, I was supposed to take off two 35lbs plates and add two 45lbs plates fora total of 260lbs. I had a brain fart because I was talking with others while changing plates and only put on the 45lbs plates. So now the bar is loaded with 330lbs. I was helping spot another member before it was my set and didn't recount the weight but I did notice that the bar was bending and I pointed it out to the coach. He laughed it off saying its normal. So I tried my set, got the bar off the rack, squatted and then my legs decided to take a nap. Couldn't get the weight back up. Luckily I had asked for a spot (normally I bail, but for some reason this time i asked for a spot) and the guys helped me get the weight racked. It was only after I started breaking down the bar that I realized my mistake. I told the coach and be was like, "well that makes sense if your bar was bending. Those bars start to bend at 300lbs."
You don't say. Anyway, as the guy in charge that's something he should have noticed when I first told him the bar was bending. He knew how much I was going to attempt because we go over the numbers before we lift. I'm not blaming him completely, it's still my stupidity at the end of the day, but still, it's something he should have caught no? -------------------- ![]() |

This is a huge problem with Crossfit. It's getting a little too big for it's own good. Serious barbell programming with weight like that, and that is certainly advanced weight you put up for the novice/intermediate lifter like you or I, requires major attention to detail. The group fitness wave in theory is a beautiful thing. It's sparked a huge movement of health and strength, and in one way it's wonderful that it's so huge that there's a friggin' Reebok Superbowl commericial. But the downside of this movement is that the number of trainees is (already) going to severely out number the amount of quality coaching.( And that was no indictment of your coach, he could be Mr. Miyagi for all I know. I just meant in general.) You can pretty much get your level one CrossFit Cert in a weekend now, and have your box opened by Monday morning. I watched a guy at a new Crossfit in our area, who I have great information is ONLY a level one coach, do an intro class in his parking lot of 20+ people to go over barbell snatch technique, albeit with PVC, but still. This is a recipe for disaster. That is a DANGEROUS olympic movement. The novice trainee should not be lifting a barbell anywhere over head. That's what they designed kettlebells for. In principle, Crossfit is the greatest thing ever. In practicality, this is your body your talking about. You could really maim yourself. Jerry, good shit on accidentally going for 330, though. Thats big boy weight, bro! Yeah I was actually looking into getting the Level 1 cert for myself. I've got a half a mind to go for the full certification and start coaching on the side. We'll see. Need to get better at this shit first. The coach is pretty good, I think he was just a little distracted. The other two guys wanted spotters too so he was helping out there and watching the girls form on the squats. My thing is that I think there needs to be better control over how many people are allowed to be in a session and have appropriate coach coverage. The big gripe I have with my gym is that even though you're required to register for a class and there's a posted limit per session, that limit is never enforced and there's always only one coach per class. I think there needs to be at least 1 coach per five or six students. Any more than that and you're asking for trouble. Funny thing is I think I might have been able to get that weight up, once, if I was prepared for it. I was expecting 260 and that it kinda freaked me out when I tried to bring it back up. No way I could have done it for three reps to make it official though. -------------------- ![]() |

Hey Chris. Do those arm sleeves help protect from double-under whip marks? My fucking arm is all welted up from double-unders today. I'm sure they do.. but a. I suck at doubleunders and 2. I refuse to spend money on the Crossfit uniform. Some of these guys look ridiculous with the arm sleeves, knee socks, neon-piss yellow sneakers, Reebok shorts. I can't keep up! I'm bad enough with hockey equipment. This post has been edited by Chris4: Mar 19 2013, 12:51 PM |

Had a 2000m test today for crew. Just blew it. Psyched myself out and just pulled a shit piece. Put in the work to break 6:50.0 (1:42.5 split) or at least be better than my PR (6:53.0, 1:43.2) but bombed and pulled a 6:57.6 or something around there. Fucking hell.

2 weeks ago on Monday I changed my diet to low glycemic. I lost 8.7 pounds in the first week. It's not necessarily a weight loss program, just a limitation of the amount of sugars and simple carbohydrates I can eat, and only 0.5-1 cups of complex carbs (brown rice, sweet potatos). I CAN eat 1 or 2 fruits per day, as long as I balance it out with some kind of fatty acid. Actually, for the first month, I can't have any simple carbs and sugar. It's also serving as a spectacular detox of all the shit I've been putting in my body over the years. Prior to this I ate like shit. Dunking donuts breakfasts, taco bell fairly regularly, candy, cookies, soda... you name it. It had gotten so bad that beginning on the second day that I began this diet change, I had 3 straight days of detox headaches and sore throat for a week. Starting on Monday, I can begin to add more complex carbs into my diet, then I'm onto 1 cheat day per week where I can eat anything I want. More importantly than the weight loss, I feel better... more energy, no coffee cravings, better moods.

Welcome to what is essentislly, a paleo diet. I don't follow the diet strictly as I still eat yogurt, some cheese and every now and then some whole wheat bread and brown rice. Between the diet and exercise I'm down close to 40lbs and that's with added muscle. Trying hard to get my wife to follow my meal plans so we can finally have a unified menu at home, but she's resistant. Doesn't matter how many times we need to go get my clothes tailored.

It kinda blows, I REALLY want a slice of pizza. I eat Greek yogurt, brown rice, sweet potatoes, hard cheeses... next week I'll add more of each of those into my diet to balance it a little better. I also drink protein shakes in the am. So not exactly a paleo diet, but close. The first two weeks are a sugar/toxin purge. Congrats on the 40 pounds, how long did it take you to accomplish? I haven't been able to get to the gym yet because of back issues, but I'm itching to get there. My wife is all in from day 1, she lost 8.2 pounds the first week also, so that makes it easier. She even cancelled the weight watchers membership that she's has for a year and a half. But still, it's a tough diet... every day I think about just going to Crumbs and grabbing a cupcake or three.

As someone who utterly despises the gym and all forms of strenuous exercise and who has never been able to keep up a regimen as a result, I think I've finally landed on something that works for me. Going vegetarian helped my cholesterol numbers plummet. My doctor was actually visually surprised at how successful it was in such a short amount of time (3-4 months). It's helped in other unexpected ways too - I don't eat nearly as much cheese for example, since most of it is not vegetarian, and I noticeably eat less overall. For exercise, I make a conscious effort to walk as much as possible. If I'm out seeing a show or friends in the Village, I'll make the time to walk back to Grand Central to catch the train home instead of taking a cab. I've started periodically taking the train to work, getting off a stop early on the way home, and walking the rest. I like it because it's good exercise but not painful or boring (like an elliptical machine, please fucking kill me now), and I can catch up on music or podcasts during the walks. Win-win. You don't see dramatic weight losses, but in the walking combined with the diet change, I've lost about 20 pounds since early last year.
I still need to cut junk down, especially vending machine crap and sugar, but that's the next hurdle. I would also like to tone up, so I think I'll get a bench with some dumbbells for my apartment. I have the space for it, and if I can knock out a few reps of some lifting exercises at night or during the day on the weekend while at home, that would work out pretty nicely. As I said, anything to avoid the gym. -------------------- Y'all laying up, doing shit. Nahmean, playing whatever little volleyballs they got on the beach and doing everything, the activities.

She even cancelled the weight watchers membership that she's has for a year and a half. But still, it's a tough diet... every day I think about just going to Crumbs and grabbing a cupcake or three. The thing about my diet is that I was able to get myself thinking differently about my food. It's not what I cant eat, it's what I don't eat. It's night seen a little bit like semantics but mentally, for me anyway, it's been the difference. They put out cookies at work? When I used to think that I can't eat it I always felt like I was depriving myself of something I wanted. Not so any more. Now I think that they're something I don't eat and it's much easier to ignore them. It also helps that I started bringing food to work with me. Forget that the food around Wall St. is ridiculously expensive, it's allowed me to control what I eat. A bag of Steamfresh veggies, a piece of grilled chicken or steak and lunch is done. It took me about a year to get down to where I am now. The first 15-20 pounds came off quick but then I plateaued for a number of months and between that, getting sick a few times, injured once, getting lazy with the diet, I yo-yoed for a bit. I got back on track a few months ago and dropped the rest of the weight. I still got a long way to go to reach my goal weight of 190-200lbs. What I like about my method is that there's no "schedule" I can't keep to diets that require you to eat a certain way for a certain amount of time and then change it up. It's never worked for me. This paleo thing has been far easier for me to follow. The nice thing is, if you "mess up" and eat something that isn't paleo, no biggie, just make sure your next meal is and consciously try to keep the "missteps" to a minimum. Keep it up! -------------------- ![]() |

The thing about my diet is that I was able to get myself thinking differently about my food. It's not what I cant eat, it's what I don't OR WON'T eat. Thinking differently about food is what worked for me also..I've repeatedly told myself certain foods are poisons - mostly the processed crap - as I'm finding out, in fact it is all poison or poisoned. -------------------- |

I was never able to keep up with a gym schedule. I used to live right next door to the fucking place and I would drag my feet going. I even tried a personal trainer. That was better since I was getting direct instruction and feedback. It was through her that I heard about Crossfit and got interested. When I found a Crossfit gym around the block from my current home, I checked it out and that was it. Now, I only miss a day when I'm sick or injured. I'm up at 5am to go work out everyday. I've also found an appreciation for running so between Crossfit, running and playing hockey I'm working out six days a week. It's not for everyone and it helps that my gym isn't too cultish about Crossfit, but if you have a box near you, drop in for a introductory class (they all almost always have a free "come check us out" session). It's a hell of a workout.
