A new single by The Prodigy:

Sounds pretty great. It makes me hopeful for the upcoming album.

I just listened to the latest Okkervill River album and I have to say that is pretty good.

For some reason, I have the David Bowie song "Space Oddity" in my head so I have been listening to that as well.

The three new Decemberists singles are all pretty good, especially "Valerie Plame" which contains the awesome rhyme, "And my Vespa became your chariot / To the Green Zone Marriott" and the cover of "I'm Sticking with You" by the Velvet Underground.

I've been obsessing on this song lately:

I get the impression it has a deeper meaning for guys, but, whatever, I think it's great. Like a lot of others, I wonder why these guys didn't get bigger in the '90's.

Oo -- Are those from an upcoming album or just for fun?

I was a little disappointed by the new Okkervil River but then, I opnly vaguely liked the last one as well and this was a bit of a sequel. I actually preferred the new Shearwater album more. (Also a Will Sheff project and maybe even the same band, but a different tone than Okkervil River.)

Actually they are outtakes from the album coming out in early 2009. It is a 3 single series cleverly titled Always the Bridesmaid. They are all on iTunes but I bought the beautiful 45 rpm 180 gram vinyl releases and they are awesome.

Yesterday, my son received a CD in the mail full of Chanukkah songs. I should see if I can rip the first track and post it here somewhere - it's a cover of La Bamba about Chanukkah.

You can probably guess how bad it is.

Since my conversion, I've joked with my wife that despite the fact that I was never into Christmas music, it certainly beats the hell out of Chanukkah music. She gets mad when I point out the "holy trinity" of Chanukkah song subjects:

1. Candles
2. Latkes
3. Dreidels

The "La Bamba" song manages to cover them all in the first three verses. I just looked over at her and raised an eyebrow - I thought she was going to shoot me.

Did I mention that this song is like 10 minutes long? emo.gif

Trans Siberian Orchestra.

I'm going to see them tomorrow at the Meadowlands (Izod, whatever) at the 8 pm show. Can't wait. I expect to be blind for a while afterwards. They put on a heck of a light show.

If they do this song real justice, it will take up 1/4 of the show. Not including the reprise in the finale.

My Christmas request this year was a USB turntable. I plan to start collecting awesome rock albums from the 70s and 80s for bargain prices. Anyway, for no reason other than boredom I stumbled into a shady used whatever store near where I work. The front of the tiny store is used DVDs and video games, but nestled in the back they have a few racks of used vinyl and HOLY CRAP did I find the awesomeness that I was looking for. Here's what I got:

Jailbreak for $2.99
Toys in the Attic for $2.99
Tres Hombres (mint condition in plastic sleeve) for $3.99
Candy O for $1.99!!!!!!!!!

I stopped at four albums because I could have blown my Xmas budget right there. They had a bunch of ACDC stuff, Are You Experienced?, Hotel California, a bunch of Ozzy stuff, Who's Next ... all for under $5 each. Whatever I look for vinyl stuff they treat it like collector's items. This place was actually looking to move someone else's junk, which is what I want. Vinyl boner!

Just recently started spinning Chinese Democracy.

Not bad....but not great, in part because after 14 years the bar is raised impossibly high. "Better" is my favorite song so far. Too much guitar wankery, but Axl does have a strong melodic sense, one much stronger than his ex-bandmates.

This is probably wasted on you since your Christmas gift has likely already been bought, but on the off chance it hasn't (or for anyone else who is looking), I picked up this turntable for my dad for Christmas. It records to MP3 directly onto a flash drive or SD card and has built in speakers and a radio. It looks pretty sweet, admittedly.

Oh, and I hope the Jailbreak was Lizzy, just because I've spent many a morning waking up to that song.

It was a great show and a lot of fun. I've also missed them these past few years for the same reasons. But this time I planned in advance. Musically, they were on point. Big and bold. As I said to my friend who came with me, wherever they could put an exclamation point, they hit it. We had floor seats which have advantages/disadvantages to them as far as seeing the stage. But the Izod has great sound for concerts. I was real sorry I missed them last year when I heard their special guest was Roger Daltrey. This year, it was Steven Tyler. Scarves and all. Regrets over! They performed Sweet Emotion and, of course, Dream On, together. It put the show over the top. Try going next year. I plan on bringing more friends next time around, so think about it (you got lots of time, biggrin.gif , hee!)

On a personal note, my music instructor told me last week (before the concert) that he's known these guys for 20 years. He's even in the credits on one of their records. I am soooooo working that connection next season. smile_anim.gif

Aw, man, I am a huge (old-school) Aerosmith fan. They fall behind Zeppelin and the Foo Fighters for me, but I love, love, love them. Damn.
I was at a Christmas party with my writer friends, which is why I couldn't go. That's one of my can't miss parties of the year.

And me having lots of time is just a perception. Believe me. My guy friend is going crazy with how busy I am.

For some reason I have been really digging the Postal Service album again (Side one on the vinyl is near perfect). "The District Sleeps Tonight" is one of my favorite songs ever. I love how the chorus almost rhymes but doesn't:

"You seem so out of context
in this gaudy apartment complex
A stranger with the door key
Explaining that I am just visiting
And I am finally seeing
Why I was the one worth leaving"

And since it is Christmas, I have rotated in The Nightmare Before Christmas Revisited, Charlie Brown's Christmas, and my personal favorite Songs for Christmas by Sufjan Stevens.

I got my knuckles bruised by a lady in black
And I held my tongue as she told me,
Son, fear is the heart of love
So I never went back"

Heard some of it, not most of it. Fleet Foxes kinda rubs me the wrong way because they're just getting mega-hyped everywhere, it's like a contest to drop their name first or most often.

Like it's a shock that I've been listening to "Colour and Shape" since it's my favorite Foos album.

Embedding is disabled for Monkey Wrench, so you've got to click here and click here for Everlong

They do the latter so well live:

Anyway, the remastered version of Colour and Shape has extra tracks on it, including the very awesome version of Baker Street, which is one of my favorite Foos songs even if it's a cover.

Here is Metacritic's summary of many Top album polls - I also have barely heard of any of this , but Fleet Foxes appears 13 times on 22 different lists as well as Portishead...one album made 14 lists - Dear Science by TV on the Radio

One album I saw out there that I completely missed, but will most certainly checkout is Dark Developments by Vic Chestnutt,Elf Power, And The Amorphous Strums

Sigur Ros. I'm part of their cult following and REALLY want to catch them live when they come back. I go through phases of listening to ALL of their albums, but they are amazing. They are from Iceland and are like nothing I've ever heard before. I highly suggest them.

Have you heard the Byrne/Eno album? I'm just wondering if it's any good. I mean, I'm sure it's no Here Come The Warm Jets...

I forgot to mention the light show. TSO has a (literally) seizure-inducing massive light show that blows your brain, as well as your eyes. The spaceship from Close Encounters is a nightlight by comparision. I'm pretty sure I suffered a couple of seizures and a small stroke. biggrin.gif All kidding aside, when we left we encountered a mother helping her son (about 11 or 12 yrs old) who was trying his damnest not to vomit. "The lights affected him", she said. blink.gif Yikes!

It was sort of a weird year for music this year. There were a lot of album I liked but not a lot I loved. (As opposed to last year where I couldn't cut my favorites down to a top ten and had to make a top twenty. This year there are several borderline albums in my top ten that could easily be swapped out.)

Here's my top ten for the year:

1. The Hold Steady -- Stay Positive
2. Wolf Parade -- At Mount Zoomer
3. The Felice Brothers -- The Felice Brothers
4. Bon Iver -- For Emma Forever Ago
5. The Dodos -- Visiter
6. Murder by Death -- Red of Tooth and Claw
7. Dead Confederate -- Wrecking Ball
8. Vampire Weekend -- Vampire Weekend
9. Phantom Planet -- Raise The Dead
10. The Gaslight Anthem -- The '59 Sound

Followed by a bunch of honorable mentions:

11. Pale Young Gentlemen -- Black Forest (Tra La La)*
11. Destroyer -- Trouble in Dreams
11. Elbow -- The Seldom Seen Kid*
11. Ra Ra Riot -- The Rhumb Line*
11. Sons and Daughters -- The Gift
11. TV on The Radio -- Dear Science,
11. Emmylou Harris -- All I Intended To Be*
11. Nada Surf -- Lucky
11. Tapes n Tapes -- Walk it Off
11. The Helio Sequence -- Keeps Your Eyes Ahead
11. Bob Mould -- District Line
11. Someone Loves You Boris Yeltsin -- Pershing
11. Frightened Rabbit -- Midnight Organ Flight
11. Steinski -- What Does It All Mean?*
11. Glasvegas -- Glasvegas
11. Horse Feathers -- House With No Name
11. Rachel Yamagata -- Elephants/Teeth Sinking Into Hearts
11. The Clash -- Live at Shea Stadium
11. Dar Williams -- Promised Land
11. Sugarland -- Love on The Inside
11. The Verve -- Forth
11. Tindersticks -- The Hungry Saw
11. Thievery Coporation -- Radio Retaliation
11. Travis -- Ode to J Smith*
11. Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan -- Sunday at Dirt Devil*
11. Oasis -- Dig Out Your Soul
11. Calexico -- Carried To Dust
11. Willie Nelson & Wyton Marsalis -- Two Men With The Blues
11. Shearwater -- Rook

Albums marked with an asterisk were particularly good and maybe should have been in my top ten.
The new TV on The Radio was disappointing. Not a bad album at all but also not a great album. I'll actually write a seperate post about The Gaslight Anthem who I just discovered this week. That album may move up my top ten.

I really liked TV on the Radio's last album, but haven't had a chance to listen to this one. I have heard mixed reviews, but hopefully it is good.
