Uhh, there are the books to read. There are differences between the two, and it comes down to whether you'd rather the books spoil the show or the show spoil the books. I'm torn with this show, as the show stands so well on its own. Normally there's no contest, but since I haven't read the books yet I'm not willing to say that I plan to get a 6 or 7 years ahead of the show... might be less fun watching characters now knowing they die in 3 years. |

I've spoken to friends who've read the books about how the first book compares to season 1. They've told me that, so far, season 1 follows book 1 very closely. Yes, there are omissions of detail. But since season 1 is complete, I've decided to read book 1. After that, I'll know whether I want to read them all or not. It's your choice, of course. I have no doubts the series will be repeated at least twice before the next season debuts, so current viewers (who haven't/don't want to read the books) will be immersed back into the story. -------------------- QUOTE When a man tells you that he got rich through hard work, ask him: 'Whose?' --Don Marquis (1878 - 1937) |

So what summer TV is there now? True Blood comes back next week or something, but I haven't decided if I'll bother. I probably will, but I'm really hoping they finally have someone take a moment to tell Snookie that she's bipolar and only dead things can tolerate spending more than 30 seconds in her presence. Unfortunately ever character thinks she's a ray of sunshine so that seems unlikely. What else? Anything? Snookie? Anyway, that show was really getting on my nerves with the last season. Sookie and Tara have become completely intolerable, and the show's plot really sags beneath all the obligatory, superfluous sex scenes. Six Feet Under (produced by the same guy as True Blood) had the same problem. In fact, Six Feet Under was so bad about it that somewhere around the third season I began fast-forwarding through all the sex scenes. More often than not, I didn't miss anything relevant to the actual plot. Both shows really exemplify the "Romantic Plot Tumor" trope. If I want to see people "fucking," I'll watch porn. Anyway, Breaking Bad comes back sometime in the middle of July, so I'm really looking forward to that. I'll probably suffer through True Blood just because other than Breaking Bad there's nothing else to watch in the summer. Those two shows should tide me over until Dexter and Walking Dead return in the fall. This post has been edited by Knight of Dight: Jun 20 2011, 03:04 PM -------------------- |

Burn Notice starts up again on Thursday. That's really the only show airing during the summer I'll be watching.
Started reading the first of the Game of Thrones books and it's not too bad. I guess I should get around to watching the series. This post has been edited by Zaylenz: Jun 20 2011, 04:52 PM |

Lisa, from what I've heard, book two focuses more on the war and less on Daenerys, unfortunately. That is probably the most intriguing part of the show at this point. To me at least.

For Lisa: LOL I saw this in the Comments section and I found it hysterical. QUOTE I feel bad for this kid that has to play Joffrey. This is probably his first big role ever, and everyone fucking hates him. The producers may have well as said; "Yeah, your going to play Hitler, and we are going to film you ripping the heads off kittens...." I wonder if Joffery will have Tyrion bitch slapped when he arrives in Kings Landing now that he is King. I'm sure he'll try and find a way, the sadistic little prick. But he'll be made to understand that Tyrion is there as The King's Hand in his father's stead, under orders to bring Joffrey and Cersei "to heel". And daddy/granddaddy Tywin gets what he wants. Well, so far I guess. Watched all the episodes this week. Good show. Mostly have nothing but praise for it, but a few nitpicks as well.
- Most of the characters I liked are dead! Fat drunk king was awesome, second only to the pint-sized pimp in stealing every scene he was in. - Speaking of which, is there a better character on TV right now than Tyrion Lannister? - Joffrey and Cersei: Two of the rottenest bastards ever. I grind my teeth every time they're on screen. - Dragons, huh? Unf. Though I loved that whole Khal Drogo plotline. Certainly didn't end how I thought it would. - The Night Watch stuff is getting a little too corny, but that seems to be over with now as they're heading... out there. Before next season I'm definitely going to need to watch 'em all again. Having a 10 week old puppy biting everything in the house takes a bit away from one's concentration, and this show has an enormous cast of characters to begin with. -------------------- RIP Ass Dan, 1981-2010.

HBO is getting ridiculously good at these things:
The final season of 24 was unwatchable to me due to how awful the CGI and greenscreening looked. GoT always left me a bit dismayed because it looked fantastic and I felt so much of it was probably filmed on a stage somewhere. It's actually nice to see they were in locations fairly close to what we saw. There were very few shots that I felt looked artificial, and even then I think those were pretty much just because you knew they had to be. |

Thing is, filming at locations is actually more beneficial for the show's longevity than using CGI for everything too because it (theoretically) lowers the cost of production. Shows laden with CGI tend to have a much larger budget, which means there's an increased risk of cancellation if ratings don't remain high. -------------------- |

Speaking of, every character in the books is about 50% younger than the show. Which makes it kind of creepier. "Oh good, more 13 year old sex..." Yeah, I know people in the middle ages got married at 14 because the average person died at around 40, but it's still fucking creepy having the book describe how Khal Drogo had sex with Daenerys. They made the characters older in the show because otherwise it would kill the ratings and the show if they portrayed 13-15 year old characters having sex. The amount of incest portrayed in the show is creepy enough. -------------------- |

Now you've read all the good ones. (I'm 100 pages into the new one and it's hit or miss so far). The end of A Storm of Swords might be my favorite moment in the series. Yeah, I heard the next one is kind of an in-between novel, like Song of Susannah was. So I'm going to fire up Deus Ex 3 now instead of start it. |

The New York Times review of the first few episodes of the season was pretty lukewarm.
The Grantland review was really good though. -------------------- I can come to terms with the senseless violence, I understand that bad things happen to good people and that God doesn't intercede in mortal affairs in the way we might want him to, but what I don't understand is why he dyed his hair red. Everything is painted green and seems in curiously sharp focus, like the inside of an old-fashioned peeping-type Easter egg. It was built in 1912 and rebuilt in 1934, and offers, as do most Boston artifacts, a compromise between Man's Euclidean determinations and Nature's beguiling irregularities. - John Updike |

The New York Times review of the first few episodes of the season was pretty lukewarm. The Grantland review was really good though. The NYTs is NOTORIOUS for being a bunch of haters. They just LOVE feeling superior to what they think of as the unwashed geeky masses. -------------------- ![]() |

I saw this last year and thought it was amazing. I wish they'd use this as part of the opening sequence.

Arya's story is one of the best, if they follow the books. Really looking forward to that.

The locations look amazing. Poor Kit Harrington (Jon Snow). He looks frostbitten. -------------------- QUOTE When a man tells you that he got rich through hard work, ask him: 'Whose?' --Don Marquis (1878 - 1937) |

Tyrion, as always, was awesome.
I also loved the scene of Cersei slapping the piss out of Joffery, who look like he was struggling not to cry afterward. -------------------- |

The episode was ok. The one thing I am fearing though is these seasons are going to be rushed.
There were so many different and in depth stories in the second and third books that it really seems you need more than 10 episodes to properly tell the story. For example, the fact they did about 20 seconds regarding Arya and Gendry tonight stunk. -------------------- |

They haven't even named Melisandre yet. Also, they did a poor job at the beginning with the drunk knight. I'm pretty sure in the book, he came in wearing bits and pieces of armor but was mostly naked and made a much bigger fool out of himself. -------------------- |

I don't know what you're talking about. That was a good, solid episode that picked up (roughly) right where they left off. It kept the tone and feel of the episodes from last season intact. It's going to get more complicated. But even if the season were 20 episodes they still couldn't cram everything in, nor should they. Not everything needs to be illustrated.
