I Like: Callahan, Sauer and PJ Stock!

I Don't Like: The Devils, the city of Philadelphia and fake Pens fans.

Per ESPN.com

QUOTE
OK, so we've talked about nearly every option the Philadelphia Flyers could explore regarding their goalie future. Most involve trading for a young goalie or signing one of the big free agents -- most notably Ilya Bryzgalov. However, is it possible they will trade for a top veteran goaltender?

The Courier Post's Chuck Gormley writes, "There are whispers that they may make a pitch for Buffalo's Ryan Miller, the Rangers' Henrik Lundqvist, Calgary's Miikka Kiprusoff, Minnesota's Niklas Backstrom or, yes, New Jersey's Martin Brodeur."

This is the first we're hearing of this and it sounds like pure speculation -- especially since the Flyers have strong options in Bryzgalov and Tomas Vokoun in free agency. In addition, trading for a high-priced veteran goalie makes little sense because the deal with not only cost the Flyers valuable assets, but it could also force them to cut payroll to get under the cap with their new goalie.

If some team such as Philly would give up the farm to acquire Hank would you ever consider it? As crazy as it may sound, my answer would be yes. While it's always awesome to have a franchise goalie, and I certainly don't yearn for the days of Mike Dunham, there are teams that have succeeded without elite goalies.

With that said, I'd only EVER consider it if we got something along the lines of Mike Richards, JVR and one of their three goalies in return.

Woof. Um. The conversation absolutely would have to start with Giroux AND Van Riemsdyk, in my opinion. And any package that doesn't get Giroux isn't worth it.

(Braces for impending HDH "I can take this to another thread but did I mention Sather drafted Sanguinetti #21")

Giroux, JVR, Bobvrosky, First round pick and maybe someone like Versteeg for Henrik.

Even for Giroux and JVR? That is mighty, mighty delicious.

But it would have to be more than two. I was just using them as the starting point. It's not happening, but it's interesting to see what it would take.

HA! I posted a long Lundqvist-to-the-Flyers trade scenario in the off-season thread after the Flyers were eliminated from the playoffs, but I then deleted it because I forgot how young Bobrovsky was and assumed they'll probably just want to keep going with him instead of making a major trade.

But I suggested Lundqvist for either Carter or Giroux plus two of van Reimsdyk, Richards, Leino, Versteeg or Hartnell.

So let's say, Carter, Richards, Versteeg for Henrik.

Biron's a pretty good goalie.

Hm.

Hmmm.

I think JVR would have to be in there for me to pull the trigger. But if he was? Hmmmmmmm. Biron is a pretty good goalie. Hmmm.

No way. Carter's good, but I want their leading scorer who's on a shorter-term RFA contract, not the guy on a contract through 2022. Gotta be Giroux. Also, with Richards as their captain, I just can't see them trading him.

If it's, say, Giroux, Carter, JVR? I'd definitely have to consider that.

But the fact that the Flyers can lose 2 or 3 of their top liners and still possibly compete for the cup is what makes this scenario worth speculative discussion in the first place.

Flyers have a ton of quality young forwards but shitty goaltending.

Rangers have good goaltending but a very underwhelming forward corps.

If we signed a guy like Vokoun though? Meh I agree it's not happening, but seeing how teams have succeeded recently without elite goaltending ('07 Anaheim, arguably the Pens, the Wings, Blackhawks (Is Niemi truly elite?), it'd be something to at least consider.

I love Hank, but I do question at times what it would mean to have top flight talent with a mid-level goalie vs. the opposite we have now.

If Philadelphia called me with a Mike Richards, Jeff Van Reimsdyk, Claude Giroux and Sergei Bobrovsky for Henrik/Anisimov offer you bet your ass I take it. And I'm probably one of the biggest Lundqvist supporters here.

Would really have to think about it. I'd probably do it because, while it's certainly possible elite goalies Thomas and Luongo are gonna meet in the finals this year, the last half decade seems to have shown you really don't need the best goalie in the world to go deep in the playoffs.

Leino is UFA and Hartnell is another borderline 2nd line guy. The Flyers are getting a top tier goalie -- I'm pretty sure we can request both Carter and Giroux.

Even with the sweet pieces coming back, I don't think I'd do it within the division...and ESPECIALLY not to fucking Philly. That's pretty much all the Flyers are missing for a Stanley Cup and I would HATE HATE HATE to have the Rangers give them that. But then, I can see the argument that what's coming FROM Philly is a lot of that significant core of players. Damn. That's tough.

EDIT: But holy FUCK would I kill to see van Riemsdyk in a Rangers jersey.

With regard to Richards, there was a blurb in the Puck Daddy news roundup that wondered if the Flyers were setting themselves up to trade Richards. So it's possible that a trade could include him.

I want to say that during the Philly/Boston series I heard similar statements from commentators, about how he could be traded, but I honestly can't remember, so I'll just assume I imagined it.

You guys do realize though that the instant Lundqvist is traded, he's winning a Stanley Cup elsewhere, right? You know it'll happen. That's just the way it is. Then, JVR will blow out both his achilles tendons; effectively ending his career, while Giroux overdoses on an eightball of cocaine in a hotel room underneath a pile of dead hookers and they'll be right back where they started...only without a decent goalie. Yay Rangers!

You realize by trading Lundqvist to the Flyers for the packages you guys are mentioning, the Rangers would essentially become the Flyers, right? No goaltending with some decent pieces up front. And the Flyers show every year that they're not going to do much without a goaltender.

I know people around here don't think Lundqvist is a big money goaltender, and it's a fair argument. But do you remember the years between Richter and Lundqvist? I DO NOT WANT TO GO BACK THERE.

And I love Marty Biron, but there's a reason why he's been a back-up for a few years.

Right winger.

Richards, Giroux, JVR, Leino and a First for Hank. God I just want this done right now.

Prospal-Richards-Gabby
Dubi-Stepan-Giroux
Leino-Anismov-JVR
Prust-Boyle-Zuccarello

WANT.

EDIT: Don't forget guys in the minors. Dos Nueve was on the Rangers last year. Who's to say he doesn't get better next year and step the fuck up? They also have Cam Talbo and Dov-Gourmet Morris doing well in the minors too.

LEINO IS A FUCKING FREE AGENT PEOPLE.

And no way do I want Prospal back especially on the 1st line. And where is Cally in your forward group?

Dubinsky-Richards-Gaborik
-Stepan-Giroux
JVR-Anisimov-Callahan
Prust-Boyle-Zuccarello

EDIT: And please STFU about Chad Johnson and Cam Talbot. My god.

I know people around here don't think Lundqvist is a big money goaltender, and it's a fair argument. But do you remember the years between Richter and Lundqvist? I DO NOT WANT TO GO BACK THERE.

But we had Mike Dunham!

Fenway Park, in Boston, is a lyric little bandbox of a ballpark. Everything is painted green and seems in curiously sharp focus, like the inside of an old-fashioned peeping-type Easter egg. It was built in 1912 and rebuilt in 1934, and offers, as do most Boston artifacts, a compromise between Man's Euclidean determinations and Nature's beguiling irregularities. - John Updike

No.

Unless we got the farm (Giroux, Carter, JVR) it would give the Flyers too much of a chance of winning the cup.

Not the fucking Flyers.

You realize by trading Lundqvist to the Flyers for the packages you guys are mentioning, the Rangers would essentially become the Flyers, right? No goaltending with some decent pieces up front. And the Flyers show every year that they're not going to do much without a goaltender.

But the Flyers "good forwards, bad goaltending" teams have done far better than the Rangers "bad forwards, good goaltending" teams in the past four years. They may not have the greatest regular seasons but they always make noise in the playoffs. The Rangers lately barely make the playoffs and if they get there, they go out quickly. What are we really gambling with here?

Fine switch Bobvrosky for Leino and sign Prospal for one more year to be on the second line.

Dubi-Richards-Gaborik
Prospal-Stepan-Giroux
JVR-Anisimov-Cally
Prust-Boyle Zucarello

The trade is Ricahrds, Giroux, JVR, Bobvrosky and maybe a 1st for Henrik.

I'd do that.

Fine then move the 1st form the Flyers to the Rangers side. I don't want to be HFBoards material! I'm not that bad I swear!

I still think you guys are asking for too much with Carter and Giroux. That's their two best players. I don't think any team is going to gut themselves like that for anything, much less for a goalie who's post-season record is underwhelming.

I think that it's more like two of the top four, because I think Richards and Pronger have to be in the mix. /hairsplitting

I agree, though. But it's unrealistic no matter what. You've got to nab two of those top three forward types; JVR looks good but there's no real track record there yet. I don't want to gamble on a top forward + a good young player. I'm not trying to be realistic, I'm just trying to say what I'd actually let him go for.

Many of these deals would be nice. It's not like a team requires an established all-star goalie to win a Stanley Cup.

Right, but I think Lundqvist for Carter+JVR just isn't enough to make it worth it. You're not getting the pieces for a dynamite offense, in my opinion. But I tend to be very risk averse; I don't think enough of JVR right now to think that you couldn't get a Carter-lite cheap in UFA. Also, I think Carter could be gotten on the cheap anyway without giving up Henrik.

Yep, which is why my scenario adds one more. Hartnell and Versteeg are good players. Hartnell's a little older but hardly over the hill, and Versteeg is still young. They'd make awesome 2nd liners.

Do you all actually think the Flyers would trade Giroux, JVR, and whoever (Carter? Richards?) for Lundqvist??

I doubt it.
