If Pete's no longer feeling this place I think plenty of us would be willing to buy it.
We've all been here 5 years, and many of us were at Bird's for at least half that time.

I actually think this is a strong community, not a dickish one, but I admittedly spend most of my time in Anything Goes (where the bickering is 90% in the one political thread), and the bickering I see in the Game threads seems more playful than anything (with maybe two notable exceptions.) Since I don't go there much I'm sure I miss most of it.

Please don't close this place. While I spend most of my time in the AG section (to avoid the dickness, as mentioned above), I really do enjoy this place and would miss all of you.

Perhaps Pete could add some more mode/admins?

I'd also be willing to buy it/take over the subscriptions or whatever (assuming it's reasonable).

That said, there's definitely a "gotcha" undercurrent here lately, I think. There's a non-trivial contingent (which I participate in from time-to-time, I like to think I don't much lately, but surely still do) that likes to snipe over stuff, and it does alter the vibe at times. I know some of us like to prove people wrong, but maybe we don't need to do it so much, or at least seem so gleeful about it.

Now that bets have been won and certain "guaranteed" proclamations of failure have been proven wrong, I'm sure the hockey forums will return to the "norm". I think since the playoffs began there has been a ton less bickering since we are all having panic attacks watching the games. laugh2.gif

I do think, in all seriousness, that if folks want this place to stay open, they need to stop being dicks to each other. And I include myself in that statement. Joking around with friends is all well and fine but no more trolling, bickering and nasty personal attacks. A hall mark of this place and Hockeybird was the idea that the level of discourse here was higher than on other Ranger forums. Let's try to keep that standard in mind when posting.

I do have to say, I don't think anyone on these boards trolls. I'd love for that word to be stricken from this boards lexicon. For example, if I was a troll I'd be in the Yankee thread with animated gifs of Mariano going down followed by posts of people laughing and applauding and if anyone came at me I'd post pictures of babies crying. Just about everyone here knows there's a line and I don't think anyone really crosses it.

Certain people here clearly have issues with others, and the knee jerk response to being called out for something has been to label them a troll so the group comes in and saves the day. Certain members who have been called out lately have posted here for a very long time and contribute regularly to multiple parts of the boards and I don't really think the term is fair. I also think it only helps escalate the tensions....

All that being said, I'm off to find gifs of Mariano getting hurt and waiting an appropriate time to launch them after some time has passed, perhaps after a blown save against Boston. cool.gif

I don't mind some good back and forth but what I hate or find annoying is the "I told you so" routine

We all make predictions and statements and whatever comments and sometimes you get it right and a lot of the times you get it wrong. But just stop with the "see I was right" its fucking immature. That's where most of the trolling comes from. Throwing shit in peoples face

So if you picked the Rangers to win in 7 by a score of 2-1. Great take the win and move on! wink.gif

As an aside, the reason that I don't get involved in discussions and game threads anymore is because of some of the things that some of the people post. It seems like there are a bunch of five year olds on here.* The vibe just isn't the same as it once was. Don't get me wrong, I still love coming here, and enjoy most of the commentary from most of the members. I just choose not to participate for the most part.

I've never spoken up about it, nor did I plan to, but it's just getting so tiresome.

Sorry for the tirade. You may resume conversing on the topic at hand. wink.gif

For the most part, we don't moderate it. The mods are here to catch spam and ban people for racism, but that's been the extent of it to this point. The real issue is the culture here has gotten a little darker, and it's harder to moderate cultural changes (how can you ban me for snark?! etc.) than it is to moderate true assholery like slurs.

Not sure dark is the right word. Petty is good. Long memories for snark is another. There seems to be a lot more "gotcha" going on than there was before, and more inter-person grudges that just pop up in every thread. I know some of us will never see eye-to-eye, but I know I personally have been trying (successfully, I hope) not to pop up and go "AHA" at every person I disagree with every time I think they're wrong, and if I do, to be more thoughtful about how I say it rather than spitting it.

I think the thing is, too many people want to have "the last word" so senseless arguments break out. If someone responds with a snarky douchebag comment, the best course of action is to simply ignore it. Don't respond to it. Nobody can have an argument by themselves.

And if someone is perpetually rude to you, that's what the ignore list is for. Use it!

Been thinking about this for a bit, and here are my thoughts for what they're worth.

As mods, we don't do much actively. We knock people down for outright racism/sexism and vicious personal attacks (though we even let those slide sometimes on the idea that everyone can handle themselves). But beyond that, the mods try to represent a level of discourse and humor that we want this site to be, just by virtue of how we interact with members of the community.

As others have said, the grudges, personal and issue-based, are exhausting. There are a few of you here, and you know who you are because you've been called out on it, who never seem to let anything go. It's exhausting ad disheartening to try and wade through a game thread or other discussion when two or more people are just jarring at each other for the sake of trying to show each other up, or because they can't let some slight go from a prior discussion.

By "issue-based" grudges, I mean people who always need to mention that they were right about something they predicted at some point in the past (e.g., "I TOLD you guys in October that we needed another second-pair defenseman, but NO ONE LISTENED TO ME!"). It is equally annoying to listen to that. I would make an exception if either of the above were done in light-hearted or teasing manners, but it usually seems to be more petty or angry than that. Also, weeding out the above while keeping animated or even confrontational discussions is tough, but I think it's doable.

I see a larger problem though, at least for me personally. What about topics that a lot of board members here seem to like discussing, but don't fall into any of the above categories? For example, as evidenced by my comments in yesterday's GDT, I utterly despise talk about ice-tilting, the league being out to get the Rangers, incompetency because refs supposedly "missed" completely subjective calls, etc. Yet, a significant number of our more active posters seem to like engaging in that kind of talk, over and over. So is that something that we should moderate, if the members want it? Probably not. But I think it chases a lot of people off.

The GDT should not turn into an NHL Officiating bitch session. It should primarily be about the game. IMHO of course.

Sure shit happens that creates discussion, but start a Officiating Sucks Thread if you feel the need to analyze their capabilities.
Some of us would love to pound away at it and others would never step foot in there.

Maybe our posters can be more proactive about creating threads when there is a topic that they are passionate about.
Then rant away.

Yeah, I guess the tin foil helmeting is what keeps me out of game topics the most. I rarely watch games but enjoyed following recaps. Not as much. The sniping isn't so bad, as I often think it's playful, but the tin foiling? Especially since it isn't consistent. Sometimes the NHL is pushing one team because it has more nobodies, sometimes it's because it has more stars. Controversial calls that go our way are just the other team whining, controversial calls that don't go our way are conspiracy.

We're basically a wet dream for the NHL right now - we're in the biggest market and we're a good mix of blue collar young'ns and a few stars that have fully bought into being a blue collar team. We're underdogs despite being the number one seed.

Bad calls happen. I got involved in that one goal that may have been kicked, but even that argument went nuts for me. Inconclusive...
