Playoff baseball without the Red Sox! Jerk. We'll be back. Don't you worry. Enjoy it while you can. -------------------- Fenway Park, in Boston, is a lyric little bandbox of a ballpark. Everything is painted green and seems in curiously sharp focus, like the inside of an old-fashioned peeping-type Easter egg. It was built in 1912 and rebuilt in 1934, and offers, as do most Boston artifacts, a compromise between Man's Euclidean determinations and Nature's beguiling irregularities. - John Updike |

Is that really only the second ever postseason no-hitter? The other being Larsen's perfect game? Wow, never would have guessed that.

Is that really only the second ever postseason no-hitter? The other being Larsen's perfect game? Wow, never would have guessed that. I guess. Though it makes sense when you consider there have been only 270 no-hitters ever in baseball history, and there's at most 50 or so games per post season vs. up to 2400 games in the regular season. The proportion seems close-ish?. -------------------- |

Is that really only the second ever postseason no-hitter? The other being Larsen's perfect game? Wow, never would have guessed that. Anybody catch the TBS studio postgame show after the Yankees game? They opened w/the Halladay no hitter and referenced Larsen's perfect game. They go to footage of Larsen getting the final strike out. I wasn't watching the screen but listening to the commentary. Who was the dumbass that referred to pinch hitter Dale Mitchell as Dal Maxvill the Cardinals infielder of the 1960's ? Are you kidding me? Any baseball fan worth his salt should know who made the last out in that game. That particular piece of footage has only been on TV 1,999,999 times! He should be fired just for being a dumbass. Nobody even corrected him. -------------------- Home Plate Beer Kings Hockey Motto: "Win or lose we drink the booze!"

ESPN Radio had a stat this morning that sums up the info Kusand was alluding to.
There's been 2 post-season no-hitters, which accounts for 0.02% of all playoff games ever played. There's been 270 regular season no-hitters, which accounts for 0.01% of all season games ever played. There's actually been more post-season no-hitters, by percentage, than regular season ones. And Paul...just because it tweaked me a bit, my entire family has been watching baseball together for decades (mostly Mets, but there's some Yanks fans sprinkled in there). Out of all of us, the only one who (I think) could answer that question is my uncle - who is a historian. Does that make us all dumbass fans not worth a salt? -------------------- Trust In The Garth

Can we talk about the TBS strike Zone gadget they cluttered the screen with?
With the ability of cameras these days it is pretty easy to see where the ball location is...by watching the pitch! What purpose does this box serve? So we can bellyache when the umpire doesn't match the gadget result? Who cares?!?!??! It doesn't make a difference! So we have a graphic during play that distracts. Not Cool and it takes away from the excellent camera work and HD production. This isn't a video game! It's baseball. MAKES ME CRAZY. And towards the end of the Yankee game last night they expanded the gadget with an additional graphic showing the path of the ball from overhead. WHY? If you want to play with this toy, do it after an at bat. But for me it's the result of a pitch that is interesting and relative. Baseball has been called the "Pastoral Game"...watching it on TV now is an assault to the senses. Relax guys and let the sounds and sights of the actual game tell the story. I will bet that if they did this their ratings would not be affected. The game is just fine without these toys. Next thing you know they'll put 3 men in a booth so they can scrutinize every single pitch as if there is insight to be found from a ball in the dirt. |

Pavano threw inside WAAAAAAY more than Petite. Looking at that he threw all of about 5 pitches in the spots your complaining Pavano was given. |

Nice graphs. It's an interesting flip side to see; I only read about the bad ball call. Those two balls graphed as being in the middle of the strike zone for Pavano are pretty funny, though.

See what those graphs don't show is the height of the player... I'm sure they were bad calls, but the three in the upper right hand corner are close and we have no idea what they looked liked, I only see one ball right in the middle for Pavano and the only justification I can either fathom is that someone short was up and crouching shrinking the strike zone, but I doubt it. Also, unless you can show me those 5 pitches or so that Pavano didn't get were in the beginning of the game and so were Pavanos and therefore influenced how Petite would pitch, these graphs really don't portray a fair depiction of the game at all. |

BUT THOSE AREN'T STRIKES! Your team won, and yet you're still finding graphical evidence to show that the Yankees were getting squeezed in a game they won 5-2. Not only that, the Yanks out hit them 12-6, I'm failing to see how this helped the Twins at all. I mean, this chart doesn't even show what ended up happening on those pitches. It could have been a called strike 1, with a hit coming on strike 2, so the outcome of the first pitch effected the outcome of the second pitch, which the Yanks most likely hit. Also, just saying, maybe Mauer is a better defensive catcher and knows how to properly frame a pitch. I'm not bagging on Posada at all, but Mauer is pretty freakin good and perhaps he had a better feel for the umpire and his zone and how to frame it then Posada did. Do you have a chart showing the catchers body and glove positions? |

BOTH teams had some questionable pitch calls last night. When that happens, just be glad the ump is being consistent. The pitch that Pavano made to Berkman was almost identical to some that Rivera made in the ninth and those weren't called strikes either.

The pitch Pettitte threw to Hudson prior to his homerun was a strike per TBS strikezone thing, but was called a ball. Now, it wouldn't have been strike three like with Berkman, but it could have meant a different pitch to Hudson with a different count. Bad calls are just part of the game I guess...groan? |

Now, it wouldn't have been strike three like with Berkman, but it could have meant a different pitch to Hudson with a different count. Bad calls are just part of the game I guess...groan? I haven't been watching the games, but haven't there been reports that TBS strikezone thing is one of the most flawed in the game or has that changed? None of the strike zone things are entirely accurate or fair to the umpire because they are placing a 2 dimensional box over an angled shot. |

I thought it matched up pretty poorly with the way pitches were called. Some further analysis (really people?) on Lance's at-bat: http://www.pinstripealley.com/2010/10/8/17...go-ahead-double |

Yerrrrrrrrrrrr safe. Yay, humans! Edit: Yes, it would have helped if the Braves had scored ANY runs. Kusand, the ump just had a bad angle. It's not his fault. Baseball doesn't need replay; it would take away from the overall quality of the game. Human error helps make baseball special and bring us back to the early days of the sport in the 1800s when we didn't have all the nice technology we have now that helps other sporting events be called more accurately since there are millions upon millions of dollars invested into each and every one of them. |

I've already lost interest in all of this.
Tampa looks dead in the water. Though they can win on the road and you know Texas is gonna be PUMPED for their first chance to clinch a series. The Rangers might be squeezing the bats a little tight tomorrow being in uncharted waters so who knows what'll happen. Also, I have to have one of the Twins jerseys that they wore last night. Those things are fucking classic. -------------------- They say 'eh' instead of 'what' or 'duh'. That's the mighty power of Canada.

paralysis by analysis
The umpire was all over the place, especially early on for both sides. I like the fangraph stuff as a casual reference, but come on...let's not overthink things. I will guarantee that every single batter has at least one pitch that he thought the ump got wrong. Until they ratchet up the technology and eliminate the umpires completely (which I do think is possible one day- even balls and strikes) it's a futile process to analyze this stuff. |

I think we could get rid of umpires in 2 seasons, tops. Honestly we could probably get rid of them now but MLB and a decent swath of fans would never go for it. Still, I think the analysis is important to at least show the league we want accuracy. -------------------- |

Oh we're talking about completely getting rid of umpires now, gotcha.
Why is it that baseball is the only sport that has a sect of fans that wants umpires completely abolished from the game, because that's what you said, that you want them completely gone. You want instant replay, fine, but someone has to LOOK at it. Whose going to call someone out or safe at a bag? What technology is determining if a foot came in under a tag? Are you proposing that there's some tech guy sitting off the field staring at monitors and after a close play at second everyone in the arena looks off the field and this guy gives a thumbs up or down after analyzing footage? How the hell are you completely getting rid of umpires? |

How the hell are you completely getting rid of umpires? My bad. I probably should phrase it more like "we could remove bad subjective calls from the game completely." You're right that you still in the immediate future need a meatbag (haha get it robot joke) out on the field to make the bang-bang calls. I do honestly think though that you could easily do balls and strikes without human intervention at this point. Edit: Also, I think baseball gets this because it is far and away the slowest and most easily objective of the four majors. There's relatively little ticky-tack subjective stuff to deal with. Are we also no long issuing warnings to pitchers and teams? So potentially, with no umpires, there are no warnings, a pitcher could hit as many guys as he wants, and no one is there to throw him out of the game, cause, no umpires.
Wait wait this could get fun, we no longer have to hand in our roster cards and batting orders because there's no umpire to enforce it. OOOOOH remember that play we all argued about, about the manager stepping off the mound and turning around and it was a second visit? No umpires there would be fun, the other team could yell to the heavens NO NO NO THATS A SECOND VISIT!!! And the other team would go, "um no it isn't shut up!" and then the other team could say " DAMNIT! I WISH THERES WAS SOME KIND OF IMPARTIAL THIRD PARTY HERE TO ENFORCE THE RULES!!" Yes, in 2 years we can completely elminate umpires. Stupidest, thing, ever. edit: sorry Kusand, went off on this tear before you responded...I thought for sure you were going to come back with reasons why umpires are completely unnecessary. Ihate the post season because iknew this argument would arise. I don't know why it gets me so angry but it does. I don't know how to explain it but baseball was made with umpires being a part of the game. I can understand the need and want for accuracy but I don't understand the movement to eliminate them. |
