Oliver Perez seems to have baseball's number right now. I'm hoping on the bandwagon because his numbers aren't a fluke. While he struck out 11 per 9 IP in his ridiculous 2004 season and he's at a K per inning now, he seems to be learning to pitch a bit more. He's walking less than he was which is making his K/BB go up above what it was in 2004. He's also giving up less homers as that year, so this is all very encouraging. Because he's been less talked about than Maine but he's our true ace (I think he will keep this up). If he does, a 25 year old ace is so hard to come by. There probably only like 5 legitimate ace pitchers that are even under the age of 30, let alone 25.

I'm surprised you can type after the beating you took last night. That was brutal officiating.

No way, you had to see what he went through. At one point he had the puck and three guys gave him two handers at the same time. They all converged on him and hacked him up pretty good. No call, though.

Not that it hurts, it was just overhanded slashes on different occasions when I had the puck and they didn't call shit.

Rec leagues are always poorly reffed. They seem to think stickwork is OK.

Yeah. They decided to host a hockey game instead. And you thought hockey wasn't catching on in the states!

A rec hockey game at that. Crazy. Seems like hockey was picking up ALL OVER the sport of baseball last night. Mets and Braves replaced by rec hockey, Arod dropping elbows...

um, shouldnt you guys like start your own thread about rec leagues? rather than talking about it in 9,000 different threads?

I asked my friend for the Mets-Braves score at my rec game last night. Therefore rec hockey is applicable! Plus I didn't start it.

Delaware, usually C leagues. I've noticed that despite the existence of a common lettering system, every town tiers talent completely differently.

Yeah - noticed that too. C tier (where I am stuck, because I am way to loyal to some people) is for guys who either played youth and no HS, or played HS, but are now 35+ (usually) and haven't played since HS. B is HS and some college, A is HS and college as well.

Here's our site, not as organized as HNA, but not all too bad. Shelton, CT adult league

shamless promotion - on the stats page C tier, that's me at #2 - I missed 3 of our games, though sad.gif

Sorry - just noticed apparently, we changed form letters to numbers - I'm in 3

Nice stats. I once scored 17 goals in a 10 game season. It was an HNA beginner league, and I was a year under the age limit to play in the league. I think my main advantage was being 20 and fast. (Faster than the rest of the competition, that is. I look pretty slow in the leagues I play in now composed almost entirely of 20-somethings.)

That beginner league wasn't fair, though. The qualification to be in it was "no previous ice hockey experience," but my friend and I were both playing roller hockey regularly for the year before (just no ice) and we had two or three guys on the team allowed to play because they were coming back off long injury downtimes.

You know what's funny? I cannot find a single rink in the Boston area that has public stick and puck/hockey sessions. There are two rinks near my school, and neither of them are open anymore. Lame. I'm not positive I'm gonna do HNA beginner school this upcoming fall because it'll run through my winter break.

I once drove from Long Island to Baltimore because I was going to miss a summer league game. But it's kinda weird that you can't find local stick and puck.

Sorry I interrupted your 3 person thread on Mets games.

Anyway, this is a much more important thread. NYRangers, Leetchie69 and I all play on the same team at SkateSafe in Farmingdale. NYR has has 21 points in 8 games. He's way ahead of everyone else. The next highest is 10 and then I'm 3rd with 9. We're 6 and 2 and we lost a bad one last night. Up 4-0 late in the 2nd, we lost 5-4 in OT. Awful.

Ahh, this is a thread on "rec hockey" not weather, ok? Should I ask someone very powerful to split it for you????

And get use to it over the summer, it's only going to get worse. SkateSafe is a big tin can and they don't have AC. That's why the one HS league moved over to the other rink in Bethpage that's climate controlled. It's probably also why they only play a 6 game schedule and don't count it as a real season.

Thanks, Kusand - They still haven't updated from the week of the 13th, so it should read 25g, 10a in 16 games (13, since I missed 3 of them - 2 for vacation, 1 for suspension). My fiance makes fun of me for not having a more even line (G to A) I can't help it if 75% of my team can't finish. Plus, our captain said that I was brought in to be a shooter - reason why I'm a right handed shot playing left wing and not a center. I play point on the PP, though.

What is it, like a puck shoot? Just stay out of the way of the guys who know what they are doing out there. And don't be a puck hog or a big mouth. Just try to blend in and if you are any good, you'll get some respect.

Basically what they said - try to pass a lot the first few times you go, but don't be afraid to shoot when you have a shot... As long as you don't try to make it into a "RedHerring Show" you'll be fine.

It wouldn't be a very good show. laugh.gif

Actually, there was just one other really old guy there. He gave me a tip on my wrist shot but for the most part we did our own thing.

Supposedly, this time was to be used for pickup games. The "stick and puck" times are for 14 years of age and younger. But I heard the old guy talking to the owner guy, and he said that he's barely had anyone come to either.

And damn, what a workout. I haven't sweat that much in a really long time. It's very tiring.

That's the best kind. If you can get a ton of cheap ice to more or less yourself, you'll get an awesome workout like you said, and you can just practice stickhandling and skating.

exactly - I'd kill for that kind of time here... the rinks near me are all booked solid, but every once in a while a friend who works there will open up after the last pickup ends (ends at 1am - he'll open back up for a handful of us at 2am)

Sorry for the double post, but I have a new question for everyone....

Whatpre-game rituals do you have, such as music when driving to the rink or in the locker room - drink or eat anything before every game, etc... (I don't want to know if you put your jock on the same way each game)

For me, on the ride over I'll always listen to Coheed and Cambria - In keeping Secrets.. track 2 (In Keeping Secrets...) Blood Red Summer and Favor House Atlantic, plus Neverender from 2nd Stage... Then, in the locker room, we'll always have Slayer - Raining Blood, Pantera - Walk and Iron Maiden - Run To the Hills. Always stop of for a Dragonfruit Vitamin Water and eat a PB&J in the car... seems to work.

forgot - 2 cigarettes on the drive - the second ending as I walk from the car to the front door of the rink.

Popeye had his spinach, I have my smokes.

Strangely, I don't have a lot of pregame rituals. I guess I always put my chest protector on before my skates, but that's more of a habit. I don't HAVE to do it that way.

The only thing you could really call a ritual is I always try to stretch at center ice.

I must admit, you are the one of only 3 people I know without any pregame stuff - though you should count the chest/shoulder pads... one of the guys on my team says he can't feel comfortable on the ice unless the first pieces he puts on are his elbow pads

That's the thing, it's not a matter that affects my game. I do it that way for comfort reasons. I'd say I always tape my stick a certain way, but I don't usually tape it anymore. I have idiosyncracies like that - color of tape to use, etc - but none of it is involved in my pre-game. I take so long to get dressed pregame that I don't have time to be OCD about anything except my stretches.

The only thing I'm OCD about is the music on the way over... and the streching/warm up stuff - always do the same strecthes, followed by 3 full laps and 2 half laps (one backward) then I just rip shots at my goalie until the buzzer goes.

I don't really have a pre-game ritual or anything like that. I do get dressed the same way every time, but it's not superstitious or anything like that. I drink 2 Red Bulls before each game. And I do do the same stretches at the same spot on the rink during warmups. Also, I like to listen to the same music on the drive over, but I carpool with the goalie and we switch every other game. He seems to listen to the same music as well. He's into Judas Priest. I guess you can call them "rituals" but it's more of a routine.

We do have a post game ritual of a couple of beers in the parking lot afterwards. Just 5 of us, but it's the same 5 (leetchie69 being one of them) every game (unless it's an 11PM game, then it's right home).

I don't do anything. I get dressed, go on the rink and take two or three shots and then go sit on the bench and wait for the game to start. I don't stretch or skate though that is probably a bad idea.

Depending on who you ask, stretching can actually be bad for you, or at least doesn't have any effect. I like to get warmup skating and shots in, though - I can't imagine intentionally not getting that warmup period.

The older you get the more you should do some stretching before a game. I didn't do any stretching when I was younger. Now that I'm 36, I do some light stretching before.

I loathe that skate safe in Farmingdale for the same reason you listed above, the place felt like a sauna the couple of times I've played their during the summer. I'm more used to ice than roller so the heat usually bothers me more, but that place is one of the hotter buildings I've played in.

Forget Applebees, I prefer Chili's. It's the new golf course.
