I guess part of my point is that we see a whole lot more of Don in general. I agree that Betty is a huge asshole. I just tend to be hyper-aware of the Mean Mommy!! trope--it's so much easier to be nice to the kids when you're Don and you don't really have to do too much to get them through the day!

To be fair, she's incredibly more layered than just being the mean mommy. Weiner has done more than just make her a bitch to make her unlikeable.

I've also noticed that Weiner has been subtely building up to this point with Betty. i started noticing her underlying resentment towards the kids in season 2 any many people disagreed with me, but look at what you know about Betty now, and look backat interactions she has with the kids in earlier episodes.

Not to mention, Weiner has done a good job of making it more than just Betty the bad guy Don the good guy. How many tv shows do you know surrounding the 60s where the Mom is basically begging the father to hit the kids and the father refuses? It's an extremely different take from what is normally seen in entertainment based on that time period.

Betty has encouraged Don to hit the kids, has no patience for Betty, and now they are becoming nothing more than an inconvenience in her sex life (we've seen Sally's actions get her out of bed with whats his face twice now and once interrupting a nice family afternoon) and they are becoming nothing more than a reminder of Don. She has never once showed any interest in being a parent.

Sally is ditressed and shes worried about what everyone else will think about HER.

I'm rambling, but this has been coming for about 3 seasons now. Betty is much more than Weiner doing the easy "evil mommy" thing. She's one step away from "no wire hangers"

Don is no saint, when he left for the date I said outloud "why is he leaving on his night with the kids" I'm not some defender of him and his actions, but he's much more of a respectable person and parent than Betty is, and not just because of his job.

I don't know why I'm semi-defending her--she is totally vile! I agree with everything you said.

I guess I don't think Don is the one to call her on the carpet for her shittiness. I hope Sally loves Dr. Edna.

So, Don's an utter and complete shit.

I find myself really disliking Don after this episode. Don bamboozled him. He's a shit. I don't know why THAT was my final straw, but it was.

Oh and it also has to do with his treatment of Peggy (and really the rest of the art staff) as far as the award. Completely ignoring the little people, taking all the credit and then really completely ignoring his own really pathetic life and how he was really no better than the kid he was forced to hire but was able to take advantage of a drunken lunch.

Roger can only blame himself, but I'd hate Don too.

This was my favorite episode of the season so far. Probably my favorite episode since Don had to confess everything to Betty.

Loved every scene with Don trying to get Roger to hire him, finally ending up with Roger finding out he hired Don while blacked out. Roger Sterling took a bunch of hits in this episode, exposing him as a hack for the most part. The naked brainstorming was great, too.

Don's continued spiral is just getting harder and harder to watch. He's redefining rockbottom. I mean, waking up and still being blackout is a move rarely seen. Let alone spending that day as your alternate (former? secret?) identity.

Also, I think most of Don's awfulness towards Peggy and the rest of the firm is just a reflection of his absolute misery. Winning that award is the only good thing to happen to him all season--his work is all he has in his life. He can't even pretend to care about his family anymore.

Roger never hired him though...Sure it made Roger a moron because he's such a hack he didn't even really discover him, and by never hiring Don he wasn't even good at what he thought he was good at, but Don is a weasel.

Don Draper is still my hero.
he's a mess....but he can still be a good man

and I don't see his treatment of Peggy as awful...I think he is pushing her into dealing with the world she desires...and she pushed back and had him "fix it" when he didn't handle the obstacle Don created.
Really well done.

I don't get why this upsets you. Don pulled one over on Roger? Pfft! That's Roger's fault. Don's a salesman. The Supreme Adman. He sold himself. It's what he does best. This episode showed that, yet again.

I've been getting really annoyed with the way Don talks to Peggy like she's a child. It is awful. But I do see teddyc's point that, she has to be able to handle the shite that gets thrown at her, and throwing it back. And to not keep checking in with him to see if he approves of her work. I can see that.

The naked brainstorming session was great. Peggy exposing that jerk for the nothing-but-talk poser that he is was sweet.

Because just like everything is Don's life he didn't actually work for or earn the position in any kind of honest way. he took advantage of a drunk man.

Look a Don's life as a whole. He's a sniveling, coniving weasel. He didn't even truly have to work for his job. He got lucky. Look at how he treats Peggy. As if he had to work to be in his position. No he didn't, he's a snake. he didn't earn that position, he just got incredibly lucky that Roger was a drunk. he's in no position to think he's above ANYBODY.

Regarding this, let me tell you as someone with first hand experience, Don is going ABOVE AND BEYOND what is normally considered showing someone the ropes so to speak. Not only that, in terms of accomplishments, and how this office was built in the first place, Peggy is already past this point. It's not showing the new kid the harsh realities of the business anymore. It's an utter lack of respect for her and her talent.

Unfortunately, this is what happens in her line of work. She respects his talent and opinion so much that shes afraid to move on and go somewhere else where she would actually be appreciated and flourish even more. It happens all the time, with men and women.

Don knows her talent. He isn't only knocking her around to make her stronger. He's knocking her down to make sure she doesn't get strong enough to realize she could do better. He's making her feel lucky to have a job, so she doesn't look for another one.

damn dude...watching this show is a roller coaster ride for you.

50 years ago women were shit on all over the place in that environment. Today's standards are not applicable.
Peggy has it pretty good for then and I actually believe that Don Draper treats her at least as well if not better than any worker there.

Don's a snake? Yeah...probably...but he's a great character! What a train wreck!!! Great Episode.

Like I said, it wasn't about men or women. What Don is doing goes on all the time in ad agencies, and really all jobs. Boss' have their favorite, they have their least favorites, and they have the idea of knocking your best talent down a few pegs is a very old managerial technique that people still do. It had nothing to do with Peggy being a women, Don is well past that.

As far as the great character, obviously. You can have a great character and still have them be a snake.

edit: the idea behind the knocking of the best talent is that it keeps them sharp, working hard and insecure enough to not look for anything else.

Man I love this show.

It's the only show where I completely lose track of time - most shows are so obnoxiously obvious with their pacing and commercial cuts. Mad Men is the only one I know of where I look at the clock and am amazed it's only 25-30 minutes in and they've already packed in more drama and character development than most shows do in an hour.

That was the best episode this season (so far). Wow. Just wow. clap.gif

Best moments I can recall right now:

Peggy finally breaking down and crying in the bathroom over her child.

When Don gets off the phone w/California--and Peggy is looking right at him, and he breaks down. :floored:

Don loses Anna--and gains Peggy.

Best lines:

Peggy: "Why is there a dog in the Parthenon?"

Don: "That's a roach."

Just finished it. AWESOME.

I believe the most famous Samsonite ad was with the Gorilla pounding away at the luggage...maybe that was American Tourister. Not sure.

SATS...Bryan Cranston is the Breaking Bad dude and John Hamm will never come close as long as that show keeps going!
But he really did do a great job on this episode!!! Loved to see him break down.

OK, who's pumped for tonight??

I was out of town for the past couple weekends and had to catch up this week with the previous two episodes. The last one was mindblowingly great, of course. I think each episode this season has been better than the last... can't wait to see what happens. It looks like Don has turned the corner and is ready to get his shit together again.

I'm pumped for every episode because I'm a total addict, but you're right, tonight could be a special one.

It's time for Don to get his groove back.

I'm pretty psyched, but tonight is also the finale for True Blood. It's hard to top that...

Yeah, I do want to see if Don has turned a corner and gets his groove back. But after last week, I dread seeing Betty and getting back to the family issues. It seems like such a drag right now. Bleah.

Yeah, she seemed to be a big part of the show absolutely nothing trailers. I'm growing to hate Betty, not as a character (although I do) but as a drag for the show

I'd love to see that punk Joey get punched in the mouth. Leave Joan the 'eff alone! Jackass!

OK, now I'm seriously pissed-off at Joan. She called the wrong person a "humorless bitch". Unbelievable. rolleyes.gif

I've always like Joey. He's smug, but he also is probably the character most grounded in some form of reality. He's one of those characters that kind of represents the audience. In the end these guys get treated like gods when really they are nothing more than flawed individuals who need to be called out on their bs everyonce in awhile.

I believe there's a Papaya King at one of the corners of 72nd and B'way. And I'm pretty sure everything located at Waverly and 6th is owned by NYU. sad.gif

Isn't it at 72nd and Amsterdam, rather than Broadway?

</super-nitpick>

Great episode! Especially the final scene where Don actually gets to go to the birthday party. Hopefully this means he's getting his life on track.

Upon further review: I found it's actually a Gray's Papaya, and it's at 73rd and B'way. biggrin.gif
