2-5 in their last 7, those wins coming over #12 Carolina and #15 Islanders in OT. They could be in 4th place by the time they play again on Monday.
But I'm sure they're fine. I just need to hear some non-specific, optimistic platitudes about their situation like "Any given Sunday!" or "Just making the dance is what's important!" or "Boys will be boys!" or "Early bird gets the worm!" and all these learned and specific complaints about how unconvincing this team is will just evaporate. -------------------- RIP Ass Dan, 1981-2010.

Oh come on now. They'll be fine...just as long as the league lets them play Winnipeg for all four playoff rounds.

They could be in 4th place by the time they play again on Monday. I know you know this it I have to say it anyway. They'd still be in second in points. I know they would actually be in 4th, but many people, not necessarily you, talk about it as if it's a huge rangers fall to go to fourth place. It is impossible for the rangers and penguins to be in first and second. It's a three standings drop by technicality. This post has been edited by SorryaboutthatWhoa: Mar 17 2012, 08:45 PM |

Not for anything, but despite losing they played a really good game. They kept the Avs to 19 shots while taking 42. They weren't outside, low quality shots either. They put a lot of pressure on the Avs all over the ice, got bodies in front of Varlamov, and were beat by a nasty deflection and a highlight reel goal. Varlamov was just spectacular, this game would've been a runaway if not for him. |

Did you know the mets won the division and had the best record in the national league in 2006 and were also tied for best record in the league with the Yankees? No? Do you remember Beltran standing in the box in the 9th inning of the NLCS to take a called strike 3? I bet you do. |

No excuse to lose to the Avs on home ice.
As long as they enter the playoffs on like a four game winning streak then i would feel more confident in this team. Otherwise, this shit better not be displayed in April. -------------------- ![]() |

This wasn't a poorly played game by the Rangers. It was very frustrating though. To get 42 shots on goal and only score one is quite an accomplishment. Varlamov played very well and the Colorado defense just didn't allow the Rangers to get a forecheck or cycle going consistently.
Del Zotto looked good. I really don't understand how there are Rangers fans out there who still think he is awful. The phantom holding call on McDonagh was quite ridiculous. Not a deciding factor but just ridiculous. I can't believe that Zucc hit the post and then Richards misses a wide open net about 30 seconds later. Zuccarello has injected some life into the power play though. I do hope he sticks around. This post has been edited by Eric: Mar 18 2012, 12:19 AM -------------------- 5-hole.com

I didn't see the game so I cant comment on it too much outside of looking at the box score and reading the thread. It doesn't seem like the Rangers played all that bad? I don't know. But just like I hate when people praise effort of guys when they provide nothing else I cant really get behind the team when the trend, and thats what its been lately, is "they lost but they gave a lot of effort/didnt play terribly!"
I gave them the benefit of the doubt because of their overall body of work. And I still think they will be fine and win the division and not flame out in the playoffs. But me thinking that and the team actually doing that is two different things and we are too late in the season to take moral victories from losses. If I'm right in my assumption that they didnt play bad then its a good sign that they can easily ring off 3-4 wins a row. But it seems like this is as healthy as they'll be the remainder of the season, so turn it around. -------------------- "I think Greatone is one more JKman talent evaluation or 101 trade proposal away from going on a killing spree."

Varlamov's strength: Glove.
Rangers key shots: Glove side. Result: 1 goal. Question: Any pre-game scouting? Good God.... At least the effort is showing up and it should make that transition into the next game with a win, hopefully.... -------------------- ![]() |

But it seems like this is as healthy as they'll be the remainder of the season, so turn it around. This was probably the best game they played in at least two weeks. I have long been of the opinion that the Rangers squeaking by on so many games made their record look much better than the team actually was, and that come playoff time when everyone tightens up the pop-gun Rangers offense will be reduced to an asthmatic spitball. Now with this extended stretch of - at best - mediocre hockey, I worry that the Rangers will also lose their confidence. They can kiss that first place good-bye; its as good as gone and I hope the Rangers can use that to develop a little chip on their collective shoulders that will motivate them to succeed in the play-offs. And when I try and share the viewpoints of some of "Team Negative" I read shit like that. As good as gone? They still are in first. With 10 or so games left they will either have a 2 point lead or be tied. Pittsburgh wont win 21 games in a row. This dramatic stuff is BS.

Well, the Bruins had a streak that was almost as good as winning 21 in a row. To win the division, the Rangers almost literally have to go 8-2. I seriously doubt the Penguins, winners of 11 straight (and beating Philly right now mind you) are all of a sudden going to lose 5 of their last 10. We'd be lucky if they'd "only" go 7-3 to finish off the season.
People are saying it's not a fail if the Rangers finish 4th? Come again? They had 12 point lead on the Atlantic Division! How on earth is that not failing?! We're all happy to see the Bruins fall apart and now have to fight with Ottawa for the Northeast. Yet the same rules don't apply with New York? I think it's incredibly frustrating to see the team end up like this, though sadly I'm not overly surprised. They were remarkably healthy this year and played great as a unit. Everyone spoke of their chemistry. Well you sustain a few injuries, have the chemistry get messed up and what do you get? .500 hockey for over a month and the fourth worst ten game stretch in the conference. At this point, I think there have to be some very real fears this team may actually finish 5th. This post has been edited by jkman61494: Mar 18 2012, 12:40 PM -------------------- |

The difference is the Rangers didnt really fall apart. Pittsburgh was 12 points back then won eleven games in a row. And yes, I doubt Pittsburgh wins 20+ games in a row. Pittsburgh has 11 games left after today. We will either have a 2 point lead or be tied with one game left against them.

I understand the viewpoint of the Rangers not playing well and Pittsburgh is crushing it. But the Rangers arent points behind Pittsburgh and in need of a major shift to catch them. They pretty much just need to win the game against the Pens and match them the rest of the way. Obviously if Pittsburgh goes 10-1 or something our odds suck. But this team has shown to be capable of stringing wins together.

I don't understand how you guys think the race is over. Because in the past month the Rangers are 7-7-2 and the Pens have won 11 games in a row, 9 of which without Crosby. Additionally, the Pens could handle their injuries, while the Rangers are seeing 1 line excel while the 2nd line has completely fallen apart and the latter two lines continue to show their consistent inability to do anything more than possibly score 1-2 per WEEK. How you can have any sort of confidence that the Rangers can match the Pens point for point in the final stretch is kind of astounding frankly. Even Hank isn't looking himself. At this point, I think it's more likely we end up 5th than we finish 1st with the far highest probability we finish 4th. The team isn't gone - 1st place is. The Pens are rolling and the Rangers are...whatever the opposite of rolling is. The rangers will need to run the table to hang on to 1st. You are being an idiot. The Rangers will still be in 1st place after today. How is it gone? Obviously, I am being figurative. And I'm being an idiot? -------------------- Living and Breathing Rangers since '66

You realize that even if we stay a .500 team the rest of the way Philadelphia would have to win 8 of 10 just to match us? Rangers go 5-5-1: 11 points - 106 total Philadelphia goes 9-1-0: 18 points - 108 points And I am not saying the Rangers WILL match the Penguins. I'm saying it is ridiculous to say we WONT and we might as well hand the Pens the division. There are 11 games left. To give up is fucking idiotic. Why dont we just skip the playoffs and give the Pens the Cup? -------------------- "I think Greatone is one more JKman talent evaluation or 101 trade proposal away from going on a killing spree."

Ignore him. Also, to clarify what Dunc is saying-- based on the current trends between both teams, it will be a longshot for the Rangers to win the division. Yes, they do currently have the lead and will still have the lead after today, but they have been playing mediocre hockey since the Winter Classic and the Penguins have just been getting better and better with each game AND just got back the best player in the game, who appears to have not lost any ground at all by being out so long. The Rangers are slumping while the Penguins are the hottest they've been all season. It's not over yet, but it is very doubtful the Rangers will finish first. And this means fuck all come playoff time-- so even though finishing first would be a nice moral victory for the team and its fans, failing to do so doesn't mean they're doomed to be embarrassed in the playoffs. EDIT: Unless me quoting you is "taking you out of context" again. But he wasn't giving up-- he was being realistic. With the way both teams have played for the last month, it is highly unlikely the Rangers will be able to hold on to 1st place. That is ALL he's saying-- finishing 4th doesn't mean they should pack it in and accept a 1st round exit. -------------------- |

"Listen team, we've been in first all season and can hang with anyone. But we've struggled a bit lately and ___ is on a streak. So I think we should just not worry about winning the division since its impossible and concentrate on coming in 2nd. Hands in!" And being realistic is fine. But dont act like the race is over. It is not. 11 games left. Basically my point is yes, it looks like there is a very good chance Pittsburgh will end up winning the division, but its not final. You dont just stop fighting because another team is playing well. Who knows is all I'm saying. You're extrapolating that from somewhere-- all we're saying is acknowledging the likely outcome that the Penguins come in first. I hope the Rangers continue to battle and pull it off, but I am not going to be heartbroken if they don't because at this point it is a longshot. -------------------- |

Last time I checked we're not coaches, so I really don't know where you're going with that.
Oh and by the way. If the two teams followed their past ten game trends? NYR: 4-5-1 = 104 points. Philly: 7-2-1 = 105 points You were the same guy spouting off how it was and still is absurd to say the Pens wouldn't catch New York. But it happened. But it's fine, keep saying how dumb and moronic it is to say there's no way Philly can catch the Rangers with the barely average on ice product the Rangers have trotted out since Valentine's day. 2-7 in their last 9 games against playoff teams. 6 of their last 11 games are against teams currently in the playoffs. 2 of them are against two teams desperately trying to get in. We have been absolutely horrid against teams that are fighting are spots and seeding. What's really funny is you'll get on people for not using facts. Yet now you call people idiots when they actually base their opinions off of statistics. In terms of hypocrisy, you're no doubt the best in the world. Sorry KOD I couldn't resist. With that, I've said all that needs to be said. Later. This post has been edited by jkman61494: Mar 18 2012, 01:36 PM -------------------- |

The team isn't gone - 1st place is. The Pens are rolling and the Rangers are...whatever the opposite of rolling is. The rangers will need to run the table to hang on to 1st. Thats where I'm getting it from. Its gone, its over, fears of finishing 5th. That doesnt sound like "well its a longshot but they could still do it if they turn it around". Thats saying there is no possible way we can win the division. -------------------- "I think Greatone is one more JKman talent evaluation or 101 trade proposal away from going on a killing spree."

Oh and by the way. If the two teams followed their past ten game trends? NYR: 4-5-1 = 104 points. Philly: 7-2-1 = 105 points So for the last two weeks you've been using Jan 1st as the barometer for the Rangers. Now that I use that you switch it to the last 10 games. Pick a time frame that everyone should follow to debate you with. QUOTE("jk") You were the same guy spouting off how it was and still is absurd to say the Pens wouldn't catch New York. But it happened. I think it was that the Rangers would win the division. Which according to some has already been won by Pittsburgh? Interesting. -------------------- "I think Greatone is one more JKman talent evaluation or 101 trade proposal away from going on a killing spree."

And Philly just scored 2 in the 3rd to tie Pittsburgh. Good thing they didnt forfeit during the 2nd intermission because Pittsburgh was up after winning 11 in a row because the game was as good as gone.
