Will definitely check it out, sounds right up my alley. Have you heard the new AC/DC? Angus dances around a bit in shorts, the drummer lays down this really solid uptempo 4/4 beat with an occasional cymbal crash, and they pipe the unintelligible screams of Bon Scott in from the beyond. Really great. You can tell how much effort they put into making the whole album.

Hey, check out this Youtube video of a band I liked when I was 15. They're still the best, no one can touch them.

New album from Peaking Lights this week. Mellow, female-vocaled, psychedelic dub from a husband/wife duo. Love it.

I like this! And Pitchfork gave it a 7.9, therefore I can be OK with liking it!

Meanwhile, the Fiona Apple album is just amazing.

Peaking Lights was definitely good work music. Not sure I'd listen in the car, but that's ok.

Also, Rush needs to get their new album on Spotify.

Fiona just doesn't do it for me. I don't know why, but I don't really like this album.

Also, the new Fiona Apple is cool but it's too... something? Jarring is a good word. It's not pleasant to listen to, in a lot of ways, like things off Tidal were.

It's amazing how tastes change. There was a time in highschool when watching Fiona Apple writhe around in Criminal was kind of hot, now I watch the video and want to give her a cheeseburger and think she has a Helena Bonham Carter thing going on...

One of the reasons why I didn't like Extraordinary Machine is that I felt it was too over-produced - the released version, anyway. On Idler Wheel...I'm sort of having a hard time articulating why I like it, but for now I'll just say that I find a lot of the effects she's going for in terms of percussion and new sounds to be really intriguing. Her voice is a powerful and emotive as it's ever been, and the lyrics really conjure up some amazing imagery. Particularly on "Anything We Want".

I think that all of those bands have played Milford Oyster Fest in the past decade. If my experience was any indication, bring a camera for the museum of poor life decisions that will comprise the audience.

Mount Eerie's new album Clear Moon (emot-siren.gif 8.3 on Pitchfork! emot-siren.gif) is pretty boring. Then I tried Japandroids again and no. No. I really need to take better care of this buzz of mine. It's withering under this shit.

Yeah! That's better! This one is dedicated to Brian "Shut Up You Fags" Leeds!

Little angelfuck
It's a shame that luck is the only thing
Did you like the fun
Did you like the times that I promised you

Open wounds on your brow
Little angel in red
She ain't loving you anymore

Little angelfuck
I see you going down on a fireplug
Little angelfuck
Size for everyone

Let those bastards believe
Dry your eyes and we'll leave
She ain't loving you anymore

Oh shits! This one!

Uptown got its hustlers
Bowery got its bums
42nd Street got Big Jim Walker
He's a pool-shootin' son of a gun
Yeah, he big and dumb as a man can come
But he stronger than a country hoss
And when the bad folks all get together at night
You know they all call big Jim "Boss", just because
And they say

You don't tug on Superman's cape
You don't spit into the wind
You don't pull the mask off that old Lone Ranger
And you don't mess around with Jim

I've been on a pretty big Ty Segall kick recently. Just really fun slacker/garage/noise rock. He has already released an album this year (with White Fence), has Slaughterhouse coming out in two days, and has plans for another. The guy is a beast. Goodbye Bread was also a great album last year.

Saw Ministry, Blackburner and Acrassicauda last night. Acrassicauda are originally from Iraq and are the first band I've ever seen employ belly dancers, all metalled out of course. I'm hoping this trend catches on. Blackburner were a weird industrial combo who like to wear what can only be described as cyborg rabbit masks. Finally Ministry came out and just wrecked the place. The fact that I was drunk and running on 3 hours of sleep contributed to the fact that I ended up in the pit until I got utterly Pruchaed. A good time was had by all.

Been digging Tanlines despite their stupid name and the fact that they remind me of Big Country. I can't help it.

Are the long 80s (late 70s-early 90s) ever going to end, or is pop music trapped in an endless cycle of reviving different facets of 80s pop culture? In about five years we'll get nostalgic for the post-punk revival of 2001 and start the 80s all over again. (maybe this belongs in the state of music today thread)

Governors Ball festival on Randall's Island yesterday was pretty great. Huge field, two stages within a short walking distance and no overlap in shows so you could conceivably see everything, plenty of food and beer vendors, lots of grassy places to chill. Phantogram, Cults, Built to Spill, Modest Mouse, Explosions in the Sky, Beck as the headliner, and my personal highlight, Fiona Apple.

Fiona was great, spastically energetic and engaging, and the sound was more polished than the last time I saw her a few months ago. I loved Phantogram - I kind of went in with low expectations, since I hadn't liked the live clips I had seen of them, and was thinking they might be a better studio group, but that was a very wrong impression. Very glad I finally got to see Built to Spill - they were always one of those bands I felt like I should know more about, and they had a solid, driving sound, helped by three strong guitar parts. Modest Mouse was cool, but the vocals were kind of weak. I actually left before Beck, since he was playing until 11 and I needed to be human this morning. Plus, I was kind of knocked on my ass by how many people were getting high in close to the stages. You see that at almost all shows of course, but it was really prevalent yesterday. I actually started to feel queasy at one point. Stupid kids.

All in all, a pretty great day. Too bad Japandroids wasn't there, that would have made it perfect.

That sounds really cool, Mike. I really wanted to go this year, but couldn't justify the cost after Bonnaroo.

I've seen Built to Spill live twice (they are probably my favorite band) and they have crushed it both times. They are just one of those really professional bands. They sound really good, and sure as hell know how to play a show.

In other news, Ty Segall's new album is out today. YIPEEEE.

Obligatory Pitchfork link (an 8.7! and actually not that pretentious a review). http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/16744-slaughterhouse/

I can come to terms with the senseless violence, I understand that bad things happen to good people and that God doesn't intercede in mortal affairs in the way we might want him to, but what I don't understand is why he dyed his hair red. Doesn't the Joker have green hair? What, was Sally's Beauty Supply out of Electric Lizard Manic Panic or something?

Are the long 80s (late 70s-early 90s) ever going to end, or is pop music trapped in an endless cycle of reviving different facets of 80s pop culture? In about five years we'll get nostalgic for the post-punk revival of 2001 and start the 80s all over again. (maybe this belongs in the state of music today thread)

I just tried to listen to the Beach House album again, and while I think "Myth", the opener, is a great song, I still can't get into the rest of it at all. I really don't get the interest in 80s synth-pop either. Obviously some of the New Wavers like Depeche Mode were onto something lasting, but there was a lot of that genre that was really terrible.

EDIT: haha, just realized that you said you liked Beach house earlier in this thread. Maybe we have different definitions of 80s obsessions.

Went to see Gary Clark Jr. last night, and that guy is just a bad motherfucker. Very much in the traditional blues man mold, but with a modern sensibility. You can definitely pick up some traces of R&B and even hip hop in his music. Really great.

Guy by the name of Justin Jones opened up, and was also great. Southern white boy with soul, in the mold of someone like Hayes Carll or Jason Isbell, who writes songs about shit like inheriting his father's gun.

Sorry! There is so much great stuff announced all the time, and I can barely keep up with it myself.

He just announced two more shows that week at Terminal 5...

I know some of you guys were ragging a bit on The Lumineers in another thread. I will admit I may come off as biased because I went to school with their lead singer and drummer. But I got to see them live tonight, and I have to say it's one of the best shows I have ever seen.

They're still doing the bar circuit....for now. Amazingly fan friendly. Did a few numbers in the crowd complete acoustic style. And none of them have a head on their shoulders. Came out after the show to do a meet and greet with people.

They'll be in Philly on August 4th. You should absolutely go see them.
