I didn't even know this was an option.

Good.
This is a pedophile protecting phony. Hopefully the new Pope allows priests to marry and purges the church of anyone remotely associated with sex abuse and its cover up. -------------------- Maybe I get what you're saying, not that your argument is coherent in the least. - Brian Leeds

I wonder if the Church will finally become a little more progressive and with the times. No. Because the next pope will be either a cardinal that elected him or a cardinal he elected. So no change. But this pope was way better on the pedophilia than others (not good, better), and he acknowledged evolution, so he isn't the worst thing ever. Not sure why a guy saying he's no longer physically or mentally fit to do his job stepping down is earth-shattering, though. Good for him. |

He was primarily responsible for the Vatican's inaction and coverups of thousands of instances of abuse. It took him YEARS to acknowledge the victims, rather than express sadness relating to the "priesthood". Watch "Mea Maxima Culpa: Silence in the House of God". Excellent documentary currently airing on HBO. -------------------- Maybe I get what you're saying, not that your argument is coherent in the least. - Brian Leeds

Harsh comments from some people on here...
And no. We don't want a progressive Pope that just makes new rules to be "more progressive" with the times. Granted there are some things i think that the Church needs to change, but progressive like the Anglican Church? Hell no. I liked this Pope in his first few years, but the last two years he's been so-so. Saying some stupid things. I'm happy he realized that he had to step down and that he did it. Here's to a younger Pope that will bring about a better future for Catholicism. I think a Cardinal from South America will be next. -------------------- ![]() |

Harsh comments from some people on here... Wait, watch this.... Cardinal Ratzinger was aware about, covered up, acquisesced in, and justified sexual abuse by priests before he became Pope. Under his watch, a frightentingly large number of abusive priests were permitted to remain priests, in positions to possibly permit them to continue their crimes. If there was justice in the world, this man should have been jailed for his inaction. He pursposely ignored victims and the impact it would have on their lives. We'll leave the "forced Hitler youth" argument off the table for now. -------------------- Maybe I get what you're saying, not that your argument is coherent in the least. - Brian Leeds

Hah a buddy of mine just said the same thing. He thinks Brazil is the best bet. Brazil has a lot of evangelicals and they are trying to lure as many catholics from the church. But, i want a Pope who is charismatic, passionate, compassionate, and willing to make changes to the Church. I don't want the Church to put in a man for strategic reasons. There are talks about putting in a Cardinal from Africa because he is black. No. It should be because he is the right man devoted to God, to the Church and to the people. I know there are some Cardinals from South America that are really good, extremely intelligent too. So that's why i am thinking someone from that continent. Yet, i just heard that a Cardinal from Quebec may be a likely candidate. I never heard of him, but it would be pretty cool if we get the Pope to attend hockey games Ratzinger is getting old and i think a couple of months ago he said some weird things that were just unnecessary too. His mind is gone. It happens. It's age. He was already ill to begin with and he was about to retire just before PJPII passed away, but PJPII told him not to retire and that he would have a big assignment to do. Quite an assignment he got.... I liked his intelligence, but his age and his cold personality (very German) just didn't attract people. Yet, it's also not fair to him since PJPII was the best thing to have ever happened to Catholics for years. It was impossible to replace him. It will be impossible to replace him. I hope God guides these men to choose the right leader. All we can do is hope and pray. -------------------- ![]() |

Crap? Sex abuse cover-up is crap? The way you are going about it? Absolutely yes. And your finishing of "forced to be in the Nazi Youth". You seem to know so much and so sure of all the facts. What's the point of discussing this with you? There isn't. Love HBO, great reliable place to see unbiased documentaries! -------------------- ![]() |

There is a crisis in the Catholic Church on the subject of sex abuse. The Pope is the head of the Church. Pretty sure those are the only facts that have been stated thus far.

So, 101, If you consider a thread about Pope Benedict XVI retiring an inappropriate place to discuss his legacy regarding the sex abuse scandal... where should it be discussed? Should there be a "Yay Pope" thread that can only be about the Pope being awesome and who the new Pope will be, and a "Nay Pope" thread where negative things go so that you don't have to see anything bad about Benedict 16?

They killed the Empress! In fairness, whoever built the harness that suspended the horses above her bed was likely responsible. UNLESS IT WAS BUILT BY HORSES??!!?? -------------------- |
