Alcatraz cancelled. Later, dude. Could you write up where you guys were going with that crazy stuff before you pack up, please? This is why I don't watch anything until there's a Season 2, and even then... And I'm not alone on that, with more people going that way all the time, and the more they throw shows with twists at us only to cancel them the fewer of us that will tune in early on. |

I'm wondering if it would be worth locking up a show for a three year deal at a rate that's advantageous to both the studio and the show. Sorta like entry level contracts for rookies. Got a show that isn't a standard sitcom/drama? Here's a three year deal for the minimum it will take to produce the show and if at the end of the three year deal the show is profitable, the next contract goes more in favor of the show than the studio or someting like that. Or maybe have some clauses in each year of the contract where if a certain ratings threshold is met for a defined period of time then there's a bump in the next year. Give a show the freedom and security to develop. Maybe the answer is to make the seasons shorter - 13 episodes instead of 20+. Make four television seasons of shorter series and cut costs that way.

Good point. They tend to write for Timeslot TV instead of the story. In UK "Luther" last season was 4 eps, enough to tell the story and GTFO. US Networks are lazy and take no risks...they want top dollar ad money so they pump the perceived drama instead of the actual drama. I'm glad I stopped watching Alcatraz...and Awake. I just don't like my shit dragged out. |

I'm quite fine instead watching shows on cable, which are less likely to be shitty and more likely to be given time to grow. If network executives want me back they need to follow that model. I really do not mind that Alcatraz, a show I would have been unlikely to watch, got canceled. It can take Grim and Once Upon a Time with it. It can take Person of Interest with it. It took Terra Nova with it. Who fucking cares? Networks have lost the ability to create and cultivate these shows and I'm neither bothered by it nor am I interested in donating my life to saving them. |

Which would be awesome. If everyone thought like me networks would have to adapt, rather than put 10 new serials on every season and cancel 4 of them after 2 episodes and the remaining 6 by the end of the season. Networks would have to be more thoughtful and take more chances. I also refuse to eat at Applebee's because the shit they serve is inedible processed fatty crap. If everyone thought like me they'd be forced to revise their menu. I refuse to step foot in Syria due to their oppressive, violent regime. If everyone thought like me they'd have to change or risk ruling a bunch of empty, worthless land. I really don't get your point... if everyone thought like this things would change. ABC doesn't put stupid shit on and cancel it every few weeks because they're evil, they do it because it's still making money for them because viewers still tune in. |

It isn't like NBC would just cease to exist. Ordering a second season doesn't mean they have to AIR a second season. If literally NO ONE watches a single episode in season 1, it won't make it past 3 episodes. There would cease to be new programing if literally no one watched a single episode of a new show until the second season. |

Bobs Burgers had a second season ordered, however it came on mid season with Fox planning on airing the rest of the episodes next fall. However, because it's not doing so hot in the ratings, it might not come back, Fox may never air those episodes.
A season order means nothing if there's no ratings. |

Not only that, realistically when are you watching the first season? When it comes out on DVD right before the second season? Someone like yourself Beamer, who discusses how little time they have to watch tv, wouldn't be able to view all the shows before the second season, and then you're already what, 5 or 6 episodes behind in the second season? When can a network count on you tuning in live when advertising dollars matter?

Anyway, kind of bummed about Alcatraz because I thought the finale showed the real promise for the show when the curtain got lifted a bit.
It also irks me because I feel as though people talked about Alcatraz, people watched Alcatraz. I've never heard a single person talk about Touch ever, anywhere, and it got picked up. |

I can't believe NBC is still trying to move forward with the Office. Kelly is leaving because she just got her own show on Fox, Dwight is leaving because he's getting his spin off halfway through next season and many other cast members contracts are up in the air. Just end it.
I did hear they might try to "reboot" it next year, bringing in a new cast with a few familiar faces left, ala Scrubs, but I don't know if I see that working. |

NBC needs to ax 30 Rock.
Every episode of the new season thus far has ranged between "plain unfunny" and "insulting." -------------------- |

Putting aside the fact that I don't agree with you, next season is the last and it's a shortened season, as all NBC comedies apparently will be getting 13 episode orders instead of 24. |

If networks knew people wouldn't get invested without a promise of at least closure they would be less risky in what they chose to air. But once on the air they'd take more risks to nurture a show. Someone mentioned Seinfeld - that wasn't a risky pilot to air but the first season had poor ratings so renewing it for a second was a risk. |

I agree, 30 Rock has been very good this season as have Community and The Office. Even the couple of episodes of Parks & Rec that I've caught have been funny enough to make me reconsider watching this show.

I don't know when you stopped by Parks and Rec has been gold since about halfway through the second season, and absolutely must watch since the start of the third. It's the most consistantly funny show in the lineup. I'd go as far as to say it's actually more consistantly good than modern family. |

So Community is officially back for Season for but with a shorter 13 episode order. From what I'm hearing ALL of NBCs comedies are being given shorter orders though so I don't see the shorter season as a negative yet.
Parks and Rec hasn't been picked up yet but they supposedly shot 2 separate endings for last nights finale based on if they were getting renewed or not, and I'd say the ending was definitely made to continue the show. The Office wasn't renewed yet either but that's a lock according to people in the know, especially because of how they plan on spinning off Dwight's show "The Farm" they planned on leading into it next season. |

and the Office and Parks and Rec have been renewed. Woo!
Parks and Rec gets a full 22 season order while 30 Rock, Community and apparently the Office get 13. So weird, This post has been edited by SorryaboutthatWhoa: May 11 2012, 04:42 PM |

The last rumor I heard was tat they were either not going to pick the shows up or they were going to give them a shortened season to wrap things up. Is that still the scuttlebutt or are they now sying that they could get another 13 depending on ratings? I wonder how many more episodes Community needs for syndication.

I wonder how many more episodes Community needs for syndication. 30 Rock is the final season next year now, so that may be true for that show. I haven't heard any rumors about trying to wrap up Community or The Office though. From what I've heard of the Office, it's a shorter season to help make room for the mid season premiere of Dwight's show "The Farm" what doesn't make sense is that the show still hasn't been green lighted, so why plan a show around a spin off that is still up in the air? I guess we'll find out in a week when all the networks have their upfronts. Community there is no news other than they have 13 more episodes. My guess is this is NBC meeting the fans half way. "We'll give you your show, it'll go to syndication, and it doesn't have to be on for a whole year" I bet ratings will play a huge part in the future of that one. |

Also, the Dane Cook sitcom will premiere next year. Dane Cook. NBC. Parks and Rec JUST got renewed and Community fans were biting their finger nails but Dane Cook is going to have a new show premiere.
Soak that in. |

Haywire with Gina Carano. Kick ass movie. Felt like watching an old style CIA-type movie from the 1970s in terms of directing.

Did anyone else feel slightly let down by the finale of New Girl? I mean, it was good, but it didn't feel as good as that stretch leading right up to the finale.

I finally can't green lantern from beginning to end.
Now, don't get me wrong, this isn't really a good movie. That being said, it's hardly the unwatchable dreck that everyone made it out to be. I was expecting to want to turn it off and that point never came. If this movie came out in early 2000 when the superhero genre started taking off, it wouldve probably been a blockbuster. The problem is is came out in 2011 (or 10?) when the genre took a drastically different turn. Like leedsy said way earlier in this thread, it is a shame because it did a good job of setting up sinestro. Unfortunately, that's about it. They didn't do a good job of hammering down tone. I think it totally could've worked if they went with a slightly more serious tone, and just flat out didn't cast Ryan Reynolds. He's distracting, he's not good for roles like this, because he IS Ryan Reynolds. I think it's impossible for him to create a character at this point. |

Green Lantern's biggest problem is just that it was very rushed.

Yeah, I didn't hate Green Lantern but was disappointed from a fanboy perspective. Seconded. The way people went on about it, you'd think it was that Captain America movie that had Ned Beatty in it. -------------------- |

I believe you mean Dean Martin.
The Gate just started on IFC. Excellent. One of the cheesiest horror movies from my youth. What ever happened to the chick that played Al? She was pretty hot. -------------------- They say 'eh' instead of 'what' or 'duh'. That's the mighty power of Canada.

Speaking of Captain America, I watched it the other day. Good, but nothing special. I thought Iron Man 2 was better. That's not to say I didn't like Captain America. I did, but it felt a little campy to me. A little too much like a World War II movie made in the 50's. I don't know if I'm explaining myself properly. It kind of felt like Cinemaware came out of retirement to make the movie. -------------------- ![]() |

Ok so you guys got what I was saying. I thought about using the Rocketeer as an example but wasn't sure if enough had seen it. I get what you're saying but I disagree. I thought it could be a little more serious.

Am I allowed in here...? Been going back and re-watching the original Star Trek episodes. They were in endless syndication when I was a kid of course, but other than a general awareness of the plots and characters, can't say that I remembered too many of the individual episodes. Pretty cool, they are far less hokey and melodramatic than I expected. Also startling to see that the cast is more diverse ethnically and gender-wise than most of what's on TV today, which is one of the things the original series is known for. -------------------- Y'all laying up, doing shit. Nahmean, playing whatever little volleyballs they got on the beach and doing everything, the activities.

The make-up/CGI on him was unimpressive-- as has been mentioned, Hugo Weaving looked far more intimidating without the CGI. -------------------- |

I'm dying to have some Stockholm Syndrome and love Once Upon a Time at this point and it just fails me every week. Ha, I was wondering what you'd think. The wife and I actually really liked this episode with one caveat. If they come back next season and no one remembers anything, we're done. Come back next season and magic is in the real world and everyone knows who they are and it's a very interesting show. |
