Why wouldn't Valentine make Cody Ross his full time LFer? Looksd like he's going to platoon him w/Darnell MacDonald. It's Bobby Valentine. Once Crawford is back Ross will platoon in RF with Sweeney and McDonald will be the 4th OF. At least I would think. What a waste of a signing. Ross should be an everyday player in that lineup. Hey if valentine wants to fuck things up that's cool w/me This post has been edited by Paul Smachetti: Apr 8 2012, 08:55 PM -------------------- Home Plate Beer Kings Hockey Motto: "Win or lose we drink the booze!"

Ross is not an everyday player. He has the skills to make up the RH portion of a above average platoon with the LH Ryan Sweeney.

Speaking of the Marlins, The Dugout is still hilarious. This after Ozzie came out and said how much he respects Castro. You know, in Miami, where there are like a zillion people who despise every fiber of Castro's being.

The FO is desperately trying to make it seem like everything is unicorns and lollipops. Tito just keeps going to press and saying, "Nope, they are still dicks." Larry Lucchino's head must be popping off.

Larry Lucchino's head must be popping off. Who do you think is more credible in that account of the phone call when Tito was in the phone store? The guy who has been nothing but calm and mature in public, or someone who has shown himself to be a bit unhinged in the past? I was rooting for them pretty hard in 2004, because of Manny and also because it was such a great story, but they have really plummeted from an image standpoint since then. I still like a few guys like Beckett and Lester, but as a whole it is pretty tough to root for that franchise in any way. -------------------- Y'all laying up, doing shit. Im not too proud to admit I havent grown up with Baseball like I have football and Hockey and theres something thats bugging me.
What the hell is tagging all about? If a baseman receives a ball to the bag a baserunner is running to, then he out - simple enough. So what with all this tagging? It opens this strange scenario where a runner leaves second, sees a third baseman charging down the baseline, and turns and runs back to second. A strange addition to an otherwise simple out rule. |

It opens this strange scenario where a runner leaves second, sees a third baseman charging down the baseline, and turns and runs back to second. A strange addition to an otherwise simple out rule. I'm a little confused by your description, but here goes. A runner can advance on a fly ball but only after the ball is caught for an out. Example: Joe Mauer is at the plate and Rickey Henderson is at 2nd Base. Mauer hits a fly ball to RF. Henderson thinks it could be a hit, so he starts running to 3rd...but realizes quickly that the ball will be caught. Henderson runs back to 2nd base and steps on the bag (he's "tagged up") Right Fielder gets under the ball and catches it for an out...at that very second the ball lands in his mitt, Henderson runs as hard as he can to 3rd base...legally because he waited for the RF to make the "putout" Henderson tagged up and went to third. He'll be safe if the Right fielder cannot throw him out by making a great throw and the 3rd baseman tagging him out. You can "tag up" from any base in this manner. All that matters is that the ball does not hit the ground. The only exception is the "infield fly rule" as for that...google it! Let me know if that helps. |

or maybe not.
The tagging thing is also this: If there is a runner on first, and then a ground ball to 2nd base... the runner on first is forced to run to 2nd and the fielder only needs to tag the base to make an out. (steps on it with the ball in his possession, or even just touches the ball to the bag) He is forced out. But if the runner on first is not forced at 2nd because he is stealing the base.....or if he advances to 3rd base on a hit he no longer is forced to advance ...therefore the fielder must tag him out with the ball in his possession. The fielder can no longer just tag the base to get him out. I think that covers all the tagging things! |

If the ball is hit to the first baseman and after he fields the ball he decides to tag first base first and then throw to 2nd base to get the runner the force play is removed and the player must tag the the runner for him the be called out. -------------------- Home Plate Beer Kings Hockey Motto: "Win or lose we drink the booze!"

I looked up the play I was (badly) trying to describe and its a run-down. Its one of the stranger things Ive seen in sports and Im suprised a rule doesnt exist to prevent it. I can only imagine how out of hand this can get in peewee games.

This may be a silly question, but since i don't follow baseball much, i gotta know.
Today i heard on XM that the Royals........won? I think. Anyway, the game finished today. So i am wondering. How do people attend day time games in baseball? Wouldn't they get like...low attendance starting a game throughout the day? Would it not make more sense playing these games at night? -------------------- ![]() |

You can call it a meeting and the Supplier Side buys the food and drink. And these days...games are so expensive that the regular folks might take the day off just so they can go to a day game (which is ALWAYS better than a night game) and then get home at a decent hour. |

My regular folk line about taking the day off suggests that going to a game is now a very rare and special occasion worthy of a vacation day.

Usually weekend games are in the afternoon. Like the Sunday afternoon game you are referring too. That way families can go and the kids aren't up too late! Also day baseball games are awesome. EDIT: Also stadiums didn't have lights until the 60s or 70s usually. So historically baseball was always played in the afternoon Ok, but now we're in the 2000s and i don't see how having a day game like the Rays and Red Sox today managed to get attendance. Today is Patriot Day. Its a holiday in Boston. Also the Sox sell out all their games. -------------------- |

The first night game was in Cincinnati in 1935 and by the 50's all of MLB had night games w/exception of the Cubs who didn't use lights until 1988. Mark Melancons ERA is 49.50 That's a pretty solid price. I bet they could get that much for him right now. -------------------- |

6 hits , 6 ER and 3 bombs to dead center in 0.0 IP will tend to inflate your ERA

-------------------- Fenway Park, in Boston, is a lyric little bandbox of a ballpark. Everything is painted green and seems in curiously sharp focus, like the inside of an old-fashioned peeping-type Easter egg. It was built in 1912 and rebuilt in 1934, and offers, as do most Boston artifacts, a compromise between Man's Euclidean determinations and Nature's beguiling irregularities. - John Updike |
