Honestly, that 1st period was as much of a mismatch as I've seen in playoff hockey in years. Crazy. The NHL playoffs are already full of thrills. Best playoff sport by a mile.

Yeah but that was his assignment there. The defenseman was out of position but Staal was there and instead of getting to the rebound he's standing still, watching the play, and then weakly waves his stick to stop Voracek from getting the rebound. Awful.

EDIT: Jesus. Just watched the replay again. Stick was up by his hips! That goal is all on Staal.

As cool as it looks, though, it was preposterously stupid. He'll get a game minimum, and while I doubt Detroit needs inspiration, this doesn't really help the Predators in any way.

Beyond preposterously stupid. If Rome plowing Horton a second late is 4 games, shouldn't that be more like 10? I mean, that's a head shot and egregious lack of sportsmanship all rolled up into one.

They look at the play's result and that did nothing to Zetterberg. Fair or not, a resulting injury matters.

Yeah. Should count himself lucky; if Zetterberg had a concussion, he might've been Bertuzzi'd.

They look at the play's result and that did nothing to Zetterberg. Fair or not, a resulting injury matters.

Yeah. Should count himself lucky; if Zetterberg had a concussion, he might've been Bertuzzi'd.

Well, since Zetterberg doesn't play for the Penguins, probably not.

I agree. But you can't Triple H the opposite team's best player into the turnbuckle at the end of the game. Imagine if Gaborik gets smashed like that in Game One. We would be livid. I think Weber bought himself a game: Nashville already has Game One, so it's not like they play from behind. And Zetterberg wasn't hurt, so Detroit can whine that it affected anything.

John Shannon is reporting the hit will be reviewed, but no games for Weber.

He's gotta get a game for that. When I first heard about it, I thought he boarded Z. At least you could argue in that case that it was a hockey play. If Weber doesn't get suspended, Holmstrom should be allowed to carry a steel rod in his glove so he can brain Rinne when the refs aren't looking.

You know, I understand this is random, but I really wish the NHL would make the incident where a guy slashes an opponents stick and it breaks a discretionary call, just like most other types of penalties.

Kings, Canucks are tied at 2 with 6 minutes to go. Kings have the momentum. Some guy named Nolan goes for the puck against Lapierre and Nolan does a simple stick check on Maxim. The stuck proceeds to break right where the shaft meets the blade.

This wasn't some two handed slash on the middle of the stick. There was a clear issue with the stick and broke on minimal contact yet the league has nothing in place to account for this.

Did Vancouver just score? No. But it took away the momentum L.A. was building. And some time, in a triple overtime game, this event will occur and it will make the difference in a game. And that will completely, in all ways, suck for the team that....no pun intended, gets the short end of the stick.
