That's been my reaction to pretty much everything this year.

I'm actually excited about Delta Spirit because my initial reaction is stronger and it seems to be getting better with multiple listens.

Did you listen to New Multitudes yet? That was the first album this year that I've started to become obsessed with.

EDIT: Lot of singles that I've liked, though.

Anyone else listening to Grimes' new album? There some really solid tracks, but I don't know how I feel about the whole thing. Its interesting that's for sure.

Thanks for the reminder -- I've been meaning to listen to this but keep forgetting.

Someone above - the old mole, I think? - said they really liked it. I think it's catchy, and I like one or two standout songs, but it's not really sticking with me. The vocals fall a little too much into the background IMO.

Yeah, I'm really feeling it. A lot of my favorite stuff lately has been in the "chicks with synths" mode. I might actually be a 16 year old goth girl. sad.gif

Remember that Gorillaz, James Murphy, Andre 3000 song I posted a few pages back? Well turns out its only the beginning of a 13 minute long experimental track which kind of just devolves into Andre 3000 yelling "I'm the Shit!" a lot. Its really great

A movie podcast from the Raelian point of view called Rael to Rael. This might be the most singularly insane thing ever recorded.

Kind of a mixed bag I thought. There are some great songs on the album but it sags a bit in the middle and I can't stand the interminable noodling on some of the tracks.

This was actually the first album I reviewed for my blog this year.

Tickets for Fiona Apple's show tonight in Williamsburg dropped to a number that was acceptable to me (but which I am too embarrassed to state here), and I couldn't resist. Pretty psyched. I've been walking around my office singing "Paper Bag" all day, like in her video. I feel like a misunderstood teenage girl.

Depends.

Andre 3000 yelling "I'm the Shit!" < 100 times = good
Andre 3000 yelling "I'm the Shit!" >= 100 times = not so good

She sounded amazing. So great to see her in that small a space, and the crowd was really into it. Really powerful voice, though it did crack a few times, once very noticeably on "To Your Love". She played a lot off of "When The Pawn", some new songs too. She seemed very nervous at first, but relaxed as the show went on. I get the sense that these few shows are a test run, hope so anyway. Only concern is that she really did not look good.

Beardo and I saw one of the most bizarre and at times very beautiful shows I've ever seen tonight. John Darnielle (of Mountain Goats fame) debuted some of his new material, songs about people with serious mental conditions, backed up by a group of women singers called the Anonymous 4. They all had astounding voices, and in their work they primarily record arrangements of medieval choral music.

It didn't always work - Darnielle's gravelly voice stood in jarring contrast to the crystal clarity of the women's voices, and they were too powerful to be relegated to background music. But when it did work, it was really something to behold. Either way, great credit to him for trying something like that. I really hope that some of this material, in that form, is on his new album.

Really a very cool show. I think the joint performance really did a little more for Mike than it did for me, but certainly a handful of gems in it. It was fun to see Darnielle live and so close - he really is a lot of fun to watch. He has a bit of a shy streak where he still seems a little weirded out to be on stage, but also a solid performer.

One thing that was fun was he wanted to perform with Anonymous 4 because he's loved their music since the early nineties, and he was just fucking giddy to be up there with them. It's always nice to see a performer enjoying what they're doing so much.

Finally getting to a lot of the music you guys are recommending here (much props to Mike and Rightbug for being so up to date). I've sort of been exploring stuff I've missed in years past, but now is the time to get to new stuff.

That being said, I've recently "discovered" Cut Copy. What an amazing band.

So, new music binge today.

Perfume Genius: Put Your Back N 2 It

Wow, pretty good pick for the first new listen of the year. Fantastic, haunting, mainly acoustic album. One of those few albums where you are 100% sure that the next song will be better than the previous one. Great listening.

The Shins: Port of Morrow

Meh, pretty standard Shins. A good listen, but nothing that blew me away.

Just started the new Lambchop album. Like it so far.

Edit: Yeah, the lambchop album is really good.

My ice hockey team has a Scottish theme to it, so the kid who works the booth during the games likes to play bagpipe music for us before the game. He played a piece last night and since I'm a sucker for pipes and drums, I was just tooling around on youtube listening to stuff. I have discovered Clanadonia. Hot fucking damn this is good stuff.

Quick, everybody! Go get the new Perfume Genius album. I've been listening to it obsessively the past 48 hours.

I think it's going to be this year's Several Shades of Why for me. A pretty simple album that I just can't stop listening to.

I can come to terms with the senseless violence, I understand that bad things happen to good people and that God doesn't intercede in mortal affairs in the way we might want him to, but what I don't understand is why he dyed his hair red. Doesn't the Joker have green hair? What, was Sally's Beauty Supply out of Electric Lizard Manic Panic or something?

I check in with this thread to see what completely made up bands Mike and Cliff are listening to right now, followed by xcdude pimping something completely awful. "Totally digging the new Hamster Rebellion right now." "For anyone that's interested, the new Merkin Summer album is streaming on wetspot.com." "I love the new mashup that Deadmau5 did with the surviving members of the Village People!!!!" See you next month.

I feel better now.

almost every time I click on a youtube to listen to what is considered AWESOME in this thread...I'm horrified and feel every minute of my impending 50th birthday.

But I am seeing Wild Flag this Friday with Mike! And next week I'll be seeing Grant Hart in New Haven.

We should come up with a list of real band names and make up a few, and see if people can tell the difference. I bet bands like Com Truise would fool a lot of people.

Insert Leedsy saying its melodramatic, depressing, and horrible in 3..2..1..

Just for you, new Justin Townes Earle:

(Not my favorite track off the new album but the only one I could find on Youtube.)

Yes. The album moves nice.

My wife and I watch the "Marty Robbins Show" on RDTV every week. It's extremely hokey, but the music is excellent and he has a nice array of guests each week. They also do a spiritual/hymn song each week and sometimes it's just plain beautiful. And I'm not religious at all. (Our only complaint is his wife Connie Smith who sounds like a hound dog in heat for her weekly song- which we FF past as a rule)

Anyhow...Justin Townes Earle was a guest a few weeks back. The band played back up on Wanderin' and Harlem River Blues. Good stuff.

I wonder about JTE sometimes. He is such a cool and interesting guy, but can be a really strange cat. His past problems with abuse are well-known. I went to see him at a small theater near Carnegie Hall in December, and he was so nervous and jittery that he forgot the words to songs like "My Momma's Eyes", and had to stop right in the middle of them and strike them from the program. When he's on though, he really tears shit up. Such a cool, deep and powerful voice.
