Saw the Low Anthem last night at the Allen Room in the Time Warner building. If you have never seen a show in that space, you must, it's incredible. The scene of the above being sung in front of a three-story high glass window overlooking Columbus Circle and Central Park South was surreally beautiful.

The Low Anthem's new material sounded great - similar in tone and style to their last two efforts, in some cases more sparse, as hard as it may seem. Smart Flesh comes out Feb. 22nd.

Also saw Amy Correia earlier this week at the Rockwood Music Hall on Allen Street. Really cool little venue. By "little", I mean about 100 people or so, spread out amongst bar tables and a small balcony. Smaller than Joe's Pub, as a reference point. It was really great to be able to interact with the musicians so closely, but it was also annoying in the sense that the bar noise was really audible and got distracting at points.

Been listening to Broadcast today. Their singer, Trish Keenan, died today of pneumonia at the age of 42. The album they did with The Focus Group is phenomenal.

You can mute it because it's Taylor Swift (even though she's adorable). I just posted it because the park scenes were shot at the elementary school down the street from my house in Binghamton. I've run that track that the moody douche is walking on. On the downside, they shot that video in June. It's cold and miserable up here.

Peter Frampton apparently recorded a cover of While My Guitar Gently Weeps and it's pretty great:

Don't know why but I've been on a Fugees/Lauryn Hill kick lately. Just picked up The Miseducation, don't know why I didn't have it to begin with, and obviously the new Decemberists album (thanks bug and Mike) today.

As Ice Cube would say, today is a good day.

I really need to give these two albums some listens. "King of Spain" is an amazing song.

Saw Citizen Cope solo acoustic in Tarrytown last night, and he was great. I think I mentioned earlier in the thread that I previously found some of his music monotonous and boring, so I was worried that feeling would be exaggerated by watching him sing those songs in that format. Quite the opposite - it stripped away a lot of the effects that I didn't like, and the sparseness and percussive sound of the guitar made a great compliment to his voice. Songs like "Bullet and a Target" and "Son's Gonna Rise" sounded great. Overall, seems like that album, the Clarence Greenwood Recordings, is his best:

This is "Lifeline", off his last EP, which I also really liked live:

I'm not sure where to put this, so I'm putting it here. Have any of you been to the beacon theatre and do you know if sitting in the front row (center) for an acoustic concert there is a good idea or if its too close? I don't go to concerts very often so I have no clue about this.

This is a picture I took from the mezzanine level of the Hold Steady show at the Beacon I went to in October:

Attached Image

Not the clearest, but it gives you some idea of where the front row is. The stage is slightly elevated, and there is a lip in front of where those people are standing. I don't have the option for front row seats too often, but yeah, they can be a little difficult sometimes.

Also, is anyone else on last.fm?

Last.fm is a pretty awesome site. It links to your itunes and logs all the music you listen to. It then creates radio stations etc. Then it has some social networking aspects you can friend people with similar music tastes to get introduced to new artists.

Heh I used to be on last.fm. I think it was around 2008, when most people who were on it were from England (its based in London). I wiped my stats about 6 months ago and haven't downloaded the software to get back into it. Maybe I will eventually. Glad to know its really taken off.

Yeah I downloaded it junior year of high school, and with the exception of a brief hiatus senior year have been digging it since. I have a bunch of friends who are on it, and it's cool to check out their music habits.

Ravenous was on IFC the other night and the movie was every bit as good as I remembred it but what I'd forgotten was how excellent the score is. Really unusual and quirky but totally unique. I'm shocked I'd forgotten it. So, I made it a point to go out and get it and it's excellent. It's by Damon Albarn & Michael Nyman and it's available on Amazon. Here are two of the more memorable pieces:

Ravenous was on IFC the other night and the movie was every bit as good as I remembred it but what I'd forgotten was how excellent the score is. Really unusual and quirky but totally unique. I'm shocked I'd forgotten it. So, I made it a point to go out and get it and it's excellent. It's by Damon Albarn & Michael Nyman and it's available on Amazon. Here are two of the more memorable pieces:

Indeed - criminally underrated all around.

All I can say is haunting. And not like most dubstep remixes I've heard.

Decemberists last night at the Beacon - set list:

QUOTE
CALIFORNIA ONE
DOWN BY THE WATER
ROX IN THE BOX
...CALAMITY SONG
RED RIGHT ANKLE
JANUARY HYMN
DON'T CARRY IT ALL
ALL ARISE
WON'T WANT FOR LOVE
THE CRANE WIFE 1
THE CRANE WIFE 2
THE CRANE WIFE 3
THE INFANTA
SIXTEEN MILITARY WIVES
THIS IS WHY WE FIGHT
--
THE CHIMBLEY SWEEP
THE MARINER'S REVENGE SONG
--
JUNE HYMN

Amazing. I am so, so happy that I got to see the Crane Wife trilogy live. Really liked the new material as well, especially June Hymn to close. The sound was great, no one part drowned out any other, and it didn't feel distant or tinny, like some shows I've seen at similar venues like Radio City. One strange aspect of the show was that they almost seemed too polished at times, with the way they kind of knocked out a few songs. It wasn't until they cut loose on Mariner's Revenge that I was reminded of when I first saw them circa 2003-04 in New Orleans, and was totally thrown by how unique they were. Overall a great show though.

There are so, so many great shows in New York recently. I fully appreciate that this may be one of the few times in my life that I have the time and means to take advantage of that, so I try to go as often as I can.

I'm not trying to make anyone jealous, hope that's clear. I was just dying to talk to someone about the show, since I went by myself. sad.gif

There's nothing wrong with making people jealous. Sorry you went alone - I would've liked to go and almost bought tickets myself, but NYC on a weekday night just isn't feasible.

Isn't that one of the points of this thread? To share one's experience about shows?

Wish I could see them again for this tour but I'm busy the night they're in town.
