But, you know, he was in midseason form yesterday. In all seriousness, its embarassing that he's even allowed to put on the spring training uniform. I think it would have sent a great message had Alderson said that Ollie was in no way part of the plan for the 2011 NY Mets. -------------------- Maybe I get what you're saying, not that your argument is coherent in the least. - Brian Leeds

I agree with you, but Sandy said the other day in an interview he wants to see results before making judgments when he was asked about surprises or thoughts on things so far. He was very careful in saying it's too soon to make any judgments.

A few more outings like yesterday and OP is not going to see the opening day roster.
I think at this point there is no choice but to get rid of him. I think it is safe to say he will not go anywhere else and do well....so that fear should be gone. What a mess. |

I'm watching Mets classic on SNY right now and it's a 1999 subway series game that the Mets came back in later innings.
Anyway, I just watched Rey Ordonez Olé a freakin ball leading to a double and I instantly got mad. That was a thing with him wasn't it? He did this crap where he refused to get in front of the ball and stick his glove out. Am I remembering this right because I instantly remembered hating him for it. I know 99 was the year the Mets had "the best infield in history" and he was part of it, but still I remember this being an issue. |

I thought 2000 was the "best infield in history." And, yeah, he used to annoy me with that stuff too.

At first I was "Ahhhhh!" But as I'm thinking about it, we're not expecting the Mets to do much of anything this season. Be competitive? Sure. Challenge the Phils? No way. So shutting down Santana to be safe may not be such a bad thing. -------------------- Behind the Press

1 down...
This really is the beginning of a rebuilding/reimagining this year. Some awful pieces will be let go, more will be gone by mid season and a chunk of the rest when the seasons over. I think this team will be a very different one come next season, which is why I hold no stock in the next 2 seasons at all. Nice weather and baseball, they win or lose, whatever. I really need to start taking this attitude to all sports. |

Utley has been banged up a lot the past few seasons. Yeah, It's actually a good fit for Philly, Castillo is a good bench guy to have, good glove, can pinch hit a slap single, hell in that ballpark he'd be considered a home run threat off the bench. -------------------- ![]() QUOTE(ree @ Feb 20 2008, 12:11 AM) If only Sonny Corleone had EZ-Pass...... |

Well they change signs all the time, and with Collins in there- probably a whole new way of doing things so the insider stuff is negligible. Utley is a little more than banged up, there is some worry that he might have to shut it down if he knee doesn't respond. Castillo adds a vet to their back up mix which is smart. I always liked Castillo, but the Mets went overboard with that contract. I don't know WTF Minaya was thinking. |

I hear ya, but he spent essentially the entire spring training with the club... It's like insider scouting. eh...not much there probably. He could report on health status and other basic stuff like if a pitcher prefers a certain out pitch etc, but most opposing teams catch onto that baseball stuff without any help. They play each other so many times and there are some players (and coaches) who can read other players tendencies like savants. I guess reporting on the rookie players would be helpful as they don't scout them as much, but these days they probably do that too. I think in Football its much more advantageous to get a player from another team. So much more there strategically and on field terminology is critical. |

There have been rumors for years Castillo has been a bad influence on Reyes. Those two are good buddies. No idea if the rumors are true or not since I am not hanging out with them, obviously. But I can see people saying "oh look, Reyes is good again because Castillo is gone" if he properly bounces back this season.

So my father (who will argue that you are wrong if you said the sky is blue) said today that it's "realistic" the Mets could be moved out of New York if no one shows up to games. If they don't sell tickets, they don't make money and the Wilpons will sell and the new owners will move the team.
Which made me want to beat my head against the wall because he wouldn't listen to the "but they make money in other ways other than ticket sales...this isn't the NHL...and moving to another place would mean less money-making opportunities" explanation. Not to mention how this team sold practically NO tickets in the not-so-distant past (I remember them closing off the upper deck!) and didn't sell or move the team. My brain hurts. -------------------- Behind the Press

Willie Harris, Chin-Iung Hu, Scott Hariston, and Daniel Murphy are the last four to make the team.
Beltran is probably going to be ready for opening day, but if he's not Nick Evans will make the team. If Beltran is on the opening day roster bye by Evans. It will all depend if Beltran plays tuesday. If he doesn't he'll be on the DL and start the 4th game of the season as he'll be back dated. Final bullpen spot comes down to Acosta, Bonser, Isringhausen. Izzy pitched today and pitched a scoreless inning. I honesty don't know who will make the team of those three. Acosta will be lost to waivers most likely, Isringhausen won't accept a minor league job, neither will Bonser I'm pretty sure. Rotation is: Pelf Niese Young Dickey (he starts the home opener) Capuano I just want Friday to come!!! EDIT: I Forgot its basically assured Brad Emaus (rule 5 pick from the Blue Jays) will be our Second Basemen. Not Luis Hernandez thank god. Great start. Blegh.
And before I say this I'll preface it by saying I am not getting on fillings already because I know it's only the first game, but I really didn't get taking thole out in the 7th during the rally. I didn't understand it either and felt ridiculous wanting to complain about it. lol Well...they've been winning on opening day and look where that got them. haha What I didn't like was reading people killing Pelf last night so much as saying "this is proof he's not an ace." It. Is. One. Game. Sheesh. Plus the guy has always had trouble against the Marlins, although I never agreed with Jerry fixing the rotation so he'd avoid them. -------------------- Behind the Press

Cashman today said the Mets abused Feliciano when he was on the team. Dan Warthen's response: "They didn't know that when they signed him?" Well played. wait....wasn't that guy the Mets pitching coach last year? Seems like maybe he shouldn't be commenting/basically admitting to being part of a pitchers abuse. No? |

Or he just threw Jerry Manuel under the bus.

Or he just threw Jerry Manuel under the bus. Yeah maybe, but he WAS the pitching coach probably best to not comment at all and disassociate himself from the previous regime in that manner...IMO Meanwhile Cashman is a douche for complaining about the guy he gave a multi year contract to. |

Men its one game. Is there any reason to think they won't end the season 25 games out of 1st? I was looking at the roster the other day and... my god. It read like an account of a little girl talking about how she saw her puppy get run over by an ice cream truck. Are most fans resigned this season is going to suck or is there optimism? Why do they have such a weak looking roster this season? -------------------- RIP Ass Dan, 1981-2010.

It read like an account of a little girl talking about how she saw her puppy get run over by an ice cream truck. Are most fans resigned this season is going to suck or is there optimism? Why do they have such a weak looking roster this season? Most are people believe the Mets won't be contending. It's sort of a "rebuild" sort of year with a new manager and new general manager. And that was the belief before the whole ownership mess happened. Sandy hasn't really had a chance to make his mark, and he isn't in a position to make a big splash or anything. And that's not really how he works anyway. But the roster isn't as weak as you're making it out to be. It's not going to contend with the Phillies, no doubt, but it's not like they have a bunch of slouches either. If the "ifs" work out, they could surprise some people and be a fun team to watch. Bay's not an awful player. If Beltran is healthy, he's one of the best all-around players in the game. Wright is Wright. Reyes, if healthy, is one of the best. I'm a big fan of Ike Davis, who is in his sophomore season. Josh Thole is a good young catcher. Pagan is Pagan. The starters aren't as bad as people make them out to be, and who knows what Santana will add when he comes back mid-season. But, you know, its one of those seasons where no one expects much. -------------------- Behind the Press

Those "ifs" haven't worked out for the Mets in a few seasons, so I'm not expecting them to do much.
But I like the building blocks on this team like Wright, Pelf, Niese, Davis, Thole, etc. It'll be interesting to see how Sandy builds on it. On edit: And I didn't include Reyes because it remains to be seen if he's even on this team after the trade deadline. Pros: Last year after going down 2-0 we would have just rolled over and died. Also, if we blew it in the 9th, we wouldn't have come back in the 10th. We scored 6 runs!
Cons: Franky Blew a save. I thought he'd get until May Pete, my view on this team is a little more optimistic than others. I believe the goal for this season should be 85 wins (partially because I'll win a boatload of money too). That's 6 more than last year, and means that they should be playing meaningful games in Early September. The lineup from last year is very similar, but actually healthy this year (when Jason Bay gets back). The Mets have 5 starters without Johan, which is something I couldn't say last year, and the front office has pretty much kept every signing and meaningful player they brought to spring training (we lost no one to waivers). Also, I like Terry Collins. He has a temper, but believes in the plan. He's going to demand accountability from his players. This isn't a knock on Manuel, I was one of the few who liked him as a manager, its just a change in style. Manuel was the type of manager you didn't want to let down, Collins is the type of Manger who you need to perform under because he's not afraid to chew you out when you deserve it. There are a lot of ifs this year I understand, but I feel like the organization is heading in the right direction and should not be taken lightly. The players seem like they are having fun again and good things will come -------------------- |

Cashman today said the Mets abused Feliciano when he was on the team. Dan Warthen's response: "They didn't know that when they signed him?" Well played. He is an idiot. "We asked if he wanted to pitch and he always said yes!". Well no shit. You asked a professional athlete in a contract year and in front of his teammates if he wanted to pitch and he said yes. This is the same BS line football/hockey coaches use when they are asked about a players health. "He said he was okay!" -------------------- "I think Greatone is one more JKman talent evaluation or 101 trade proposal away from going on a killing spree."

Just because they have five starters doesnt mean they are good. The Mets will be lucky to match last years win total. There's no point in debating this because they are 2 games into the season and this is all personal opinion. I am just excited for the season and am so glad baseball is back. -------------------- |

There's no point in debating this because they are 2 games into the season and this is all personal opinion. I am just excited for the season and am so glad baseball is back. Its not really opinion. Show me any baseball measure that proves the Mets starting rotation is league average. It's nice to have faith in things falling your way, but you need a little dose of reality. A season in which Reyes remains healthy, guys like Neise, Davis and Thole develop and they are able to pawn off some vets at the deadline for a decent haul should be considered a solid season. Stranger things have happened, but the odds of meaningful games in September and everything breaking the Mets way for that to happen is slim. EDIT: Did not come here to troll, so sorry if it came off that way to any of the Mets faithful here. I'll bow out.
