Anyone else watch Game of Thrones last night?

I've never read any of the books, but the show was just full of awesome things last night. Decapitations, boobs, disemboweling. Ownage.

I don't have HBO, but I've heard that this show is basically Lord of the Rings with fucking. This can't possibly be a bad thing.

Probably going to watch it towards the end of the season, and just catch up on the replays using on demand. It looks really good, though.

See that would be pretty interesting to watch. I'm think more along the lines of Sam on Frodo action. Not really into little people porn.

I'm a big fan of the books and have been anticipating this series for some time. The first episode did not disappoint. I just hope it doesn't get canceled a couple seasons in.

Taki there is actually a midget getting a blowjob in the first episode.

Then the midget has an orgy with a bunch of prostitutes. No joke.

The albino chick in Game of Thrones is awfully cute.

The series is going to be awesome, already renewed for Season 2 which I assume will follow the "Clash of Kings" storyline.

I was meh about the show. I even read the books and was happy to leave it at that...

But goddamn HBO, you always know how to push my buttons. Swords, unnecessary nudity, lots of beautiful matte paintings.

It's been 2 episodes and i'm in love with this show.

GAME OF FUCKING OWNS

+1. Another great episode tonight, though a little slower and more expository than the previous two. Tyrion Lannister was my favorite character in the books, the closest they have to a lovable asshole (every character is an asshole of some stripe; most of them are unlovable), and Peter Dinklage is making me love him even more, though it must be said his British accent is horrible. And for people who have read the books...

Spoilers!!!!!! Some of which are pretty major!!!!!!!!!!!!!!OMFGWTFBBQ/????/..

Tyrion is heading south on the Kingsroad, and Catelyn is heading north...I can't wait for the scene where they meet. That whole storyline of Tyrion and Catelyn journeying to her sister's castle was all kinds of awesome.

I can't wait for Daenerys's brother to get what's coming to him.

They really lingered on Catelyn and Ned's goodbye. My wife reminded me that that's the last time they ever see each other.

Also...is anyone watching The Borgias? One of the cardinals looks exactly like Don Cherry. It's unreal.

There were several -- horse and human -- on The Borgias, too. (Although we watched last week and this week's episodes back to back last night, so it may have been from last week's show).

And an extended scene of chest shaving!

Good ending though. Excited as hell for next week's episode.

I can come to terms with the senseless violence, I understand that bad things happen to good people and that God doesn't intercede in mortal affairs in the way we might want him to, but what I don't understand is why he dyed his hair red. Doesn't the Joker have green hair? What, was Sally's Beauty Supply out of Electric Lizard Manic Panic or something?

Yeah this show kicks ass.

I think old mole said he has read the books and I wonder if it's better or worse to have read them. I like being surprised by plot developments, but it has to be a little easier to watch if you're already aware of all the character relationships and such.

I read the books and honestly, it doesn't really matter. This show is so well done and moves so fast that it really took the best aspects of the book and made a season out of it. I'm kinda sad that this show would have to go on for years for you guys to get the full effect of how awesome this guy's writing really is and how fucked up some of his plot twists are.

It's still totally worth reading, even if you saw the show. book 2 is really where everything picks up, so i kind hope HBO has already started shooting.

I tend to get so wrapped up in shows and movies that even if I absolutely know what's going to happen, I still feel the intended emotions. I'm the kind of person that doesn't get bothered by spoilers because for me the pleasure is not in being surprised, but in watching a story unfold. In fact, knowing exactly what's going to happen in next week's episode has me counting down the hours to 9 PM Sunday. All along I keep thinking things like, "I can't wait to see the scene where Arya gets her first swordfighting lesson...the scene where Catelyn confronts Tyrion...the scene where The Mountain jousts The Knight of Flowers...the scene where Jaime confronts Ned...are they actually going to show Lysa Arryn breastfeeding her eight year old son?" And from what I know of the books, next week's episode is going to deliver. I can't wait. No more pimps and eunuchs standing around arguing over who has the bigger palace intrigue dick, no more thinly-veiled infodumps in the form of children reciting history lessons, no more medieval C-SPAN deficit committee meetings, just shit getting REAL from here on out.

Speaking of the Knight of Flowers...that scene between him and Renly was not in the book; in fact, it's never explicitly stated that they're gay, though it's pretty strongly insinuated and hinted at throughout the series. I can't believe I never thought anything about Renly's crew of knights, the Rainbow Guard, when I'm of the school of literary criticism that sees metaphors for homosexuality and/or Jesus under every comma.

The AV Club is doing two reviews for Game of Thrones: one for people who have read the books and one for people who haven't. It's worth reading the latter for the speculations of virginal viewers, so innocent and naive, but also just to see what impressions non-readers have of the show.

This weeks episode of Game of Thones is called "A Golden Crown".

If that means what I think it means....ZOMG

When Robert's younger brother was being shaved cleaned by his boy he through out that he was 4th in line for the throne.

That reminded me of Stannis....he has not appeared yet has he? Just want to make sure I didn't miss it.

If you think it means what I think you think it means...I've been looking forward to that scene all season.

Book 1/Season 1 spoiler
Viserys's death is my second favorite death scene in the series...

Book 3 spoiler
...second only to when Tyrion kills Tywin on the toilet..."Tywin Lannister did not, in the end, shit gold"

I know Stannis hasn't appeared on screen yet, and I don't think he shows up in person until the second book anyway (but I could be wrong about that).

I typically dislike fantasy crap, but this isn't too deep in fantasy (everyone's human) and it's insanely well acted. Insanely. Peter Dinklage and the little tomboy daughter are highlights.

And, like Boardwalk Empire, the greenscreening isn't a distraction, unlike the final season of 24 where it was all I noticed.

Damn fine television.

There have been a lot of fantasy novels published in the last 10 years that subvert the genre's (sometimes racist, often sexist, politically and psychologically juvenile) conventions, sort of like what the New Wave did for science fiction in the 60s and 70s. It's not all "the Chosen One, a boy of modest beginnings, fights the forces of Evil and wins the throne of the Kingdom of Good with the help of an old wizard, a stoic elf, and a comical dwarf" type bullshit anymore.

Peter Dinklage/Tyrion are a highlight of every show. He steals every scene he's in. And Arya's a real daddy's girl if you ask me.

Yes, but I still dislike fantasy by and large. There are exceptions, but they're rare. I hate Star Wars, remember. Hate.

Anyway, there are definite notes of sexism in Game of Thrones. Essentially the more feminine a character is the less likeable and more likely to be evil they are. Not a rule, but fairly close to it.

Two other things I've noticed:

1) Peter Dinklage kind of reminds me of Jack Nicholson in The Departed, in that he does a massively entertaining job but almost feels like he's in an entirely different movie than the rest of the cast. Granted, this isn't a movie, but I think it applies a bit. Still wouldn't change it at all, much like I wouldn't have with The Departed.

If you like Peter Dinklage, check out The Station Agent, it is a small independent movie he was in and it is all kinds of awesome. Bonus points for it being shot in Rockaway NJ, up the street from where my work was located.

I can come to terms with the senseless violence, I understand that bad things happen to good people and that God doesn't intercede in mortal affairs in the way we might want him to, but what I don't understand is why he dyed his hair red. Game of Thrones.

ARRRGHHHH! Balish, you son-of-a-bitch!! Wait, why am I surprised at the little weasel's betrayal?

And Khal Drogo is ready to kick serious ass. Gah! The tension is thick enough to cut with a saw. nailbiting.gif

Incidentally, I think Game of Thrones is the only show whose opening credits don't make me want to stab my brain through my eyes.

The opening credits are amazing. And the accompanying music is so appropriate. I have to make sure I tune in in time to see them. I think this show's credits had a bigger budget than some network shows entire budget for one season.

Yeah, many of the shows on "premium cable channels" make up for not having commercials by having five-minute-long opening credits. True Blood, Dexter, and especially The Wire are heinous about it.

Dexter's make me want to kill myself.
Entourage's make me want to kill myself.
Boardwalk Empire's make me want to kill myself.
Shameless' make me want to kill myself.
How I Met Your Mother's make me want to kill myself.
Venture Brother's slightly less make me want to kill myself.

Can't remember any others right now, but I pretty much find myself desperately fast forwarding through all of them, praying I don't hear a single note of music.

Funny - seems to me that most shows don't even have opening credits to speak of anymore beyond a stinger, and half the time you don't even see those until about 10 minutes into the show.

I don't mind credits at all, except for True Blood. It ends up being in my head for a week and just when it's out it's next Sunday already. It's also way too long, but I'm happy enough with my life that it doesn't make me want to end it. laugh2.gif

How I Met Your Mother's theme song is LITERALLY 15 seconds long. 15 seconds.

The only show that he listed that I actually watch is Venture Brothers, and their opening music is fucking great - besides which, most episodes don't carry the full opening anymore.

Most shows don't really have themes the way that they used to - makes me sad sometimes.

15 awful seconds.

Oh yeah, Community and Psych also have awful, awful music.

And Sed, that most shows don't have openings makes the ones that do that much worse. Over the course of watching some of these shows you see those same 15-30 seconds hundreds of times. Watch a few episodes and a row and you just hear the music every 22 seconds.

Hate it. Most of them become nails on a chalkboard for me almost immediately.
